Abdominal skin from quick gain and loss
Morning folks. I have a curiosity that I am exploring. Several years back I peaked out at 297lb. It was a fairly quick gain, I went from 245 to that 297 in less than a year (third shift, new baby...). Then, when I realized it, I lost 50lbs over the following 7 months or so. I am male standing 6'-0" (183cm) tall. At that…

Runners that lift... Suggestions
Morning folks I'm looking for some comparisons on incorporating weight programs. I have been running now for about 3 years, I currently average about 15 miles per week. I also lift 3 times a week. I decided, this week, to change things up a little bit and was wondering how others designed their programs. Back story: I sat…

Body fat measurement
Morning! I was at the gym last night and asked the head trainer about using their body fat device. This is the one they have. I'm looking for opinions. I'm not looking for perfection, just a fairly reliable device. Does anyone use one of these? are they at all reliable? Or should I just get a generic caliper and do it that…

Weight lifting for weight loss-back pain
I am posting this topic as an additional question related to one from earlier; "Advice needed, imitating squats". Here is my problem: I need to lose 20 more pounds, but I need to add some muscle mass (Who doesn't?). I have a bit (understatement) of a weak "core". So as I am able to increase the weights I am lifting my…

Advice needed, Imitating Squats
I am looking for an exercise to imitate squats. Either 1, or a small series that will give the same effect. Reason: Back when I worked for Uncle Sam (Marines), my boss had a thing for running with all our gear; Backpacks, flack jacket, helmets, rifles(imitated)...The works. Well at this time in my life I knew very little…

Tendinitis in the elbow and weights
Morning all It appears that I've developed tendinitis in the right elbow. "lateral Epicondylitis"-I don't even play tennis. It is not a real dramatic case, as in it doesn't hurt at any time except when in direct use. I did chest and tri work on Monday without agrivating it, just had to focus on not gripping too tightly and…

The "Pace" of Mother Nature
So this morning I get up at my normal run time. The alarm goes off at 4:10 am and I am on the road by 5:00 am; you can take a guess as to the quality of my sunlight. NADA. I normally wear a sleeve-less shirt to jog but it was 40 degrees this morning so I wore a Duo Dry shirt. Since this shirt is thinner than my normal…

--Getting shoes "Fitted" is not expensive--
Just in case anyone is worried about price, don't be. My story: I bought some shoes at a ****'s sporting Goods last year. They cost around $140 after tax. I have flat feet and knee and back problems so shoes are an issue for me. These were purchased just for the gym, but I got running shoes because I fugured--Who knows.…

Great accessory for biking with kids!!
For anyone who has small children and likes to use their bike for exercise, I found a great tool. Our daughter just turned 3 and got her first bike a couple weeks back. My wife and I have been taking her out and riding as a family quite a bit. We weren't getting any cardio benefits from it but we had fun and baby girl had…

Bike riders and - bike trailers-**
Good morning. This weekend was my daughters 3rd birthday, and we got her a new bike. She won't get off the thing. There was a time that my bike was my only transportation, and I have recently pulled it out of storage and cleaned it up. I was also just recently able to talk my wife into getting a bike to join me. My problem…

Backpackers/Hikers......
Well now that spring is coming to life i am debating all those things that I can do to help shrink me down. It has been many years since I threw a pack on my back for fun. Yes I wore a pack in the service, but I don't count that as fun for more reasons beyond it being my job. I don't know anyone that would wear a 80-100 lb…

Why are we crazy about dogs? SAD
This is sad, but a good end. My wife was one of those painfully shy children. She and her sister didn't make friends easily, but the ones they did make will probably be friends forever. 15 years ago an acquaintance of hers asked that she watch his dog for a while. The dog was a Rot/Golden Lab mix. Dumber than a stick, but…

Pointless irrational fears
I am sure that many have noticed that anything we have tripped on in the past seams much more likely to happen again. My example: In 2003 I was in great shape. In the same month I tore a hole in the bottom of my foot on a nail in a boat dock that got infected, dislocated an elbow, tore a muscle in my shoulder (I think,…

Heart rate scale
I wanted to clarify a chart I saw yesterday. Looking at the equation for max heart rate, at 34 yrs. my max should be 186 bpm. I was looking on a chart yesterday and it deliniated that 60-70% was the fat burning zone. so that makes 132 bpm just a hair more than 70%. My question is: If I go to say, 75%, does the fat burning…
