Does anyone here have Rosacea?
I've had mild rosacea (just super rosy across the bridge of the nose) for years but had a bizarre and crazy breakout last night. I have a patch 2"x3" across one cheek that is completely broken out. It looks like the worst case of acne you've ever seen, and is swollen and stiff. I was looking at various websites about…

Buying a gift - Sized for now or goal?
I want to buy my boyfriend a specific t-shirt that he's been drooling over for months. It's a surprise, so I can't ask him about it. He also is on the other side of the world and I won't see him for a few months, so if it's the wrong size, I can't return it. Right now he wears a Large, but he's not happy with how he looks…

What do you do for exercise when you literally can't leave t
We are having horrible weather up here in the Pacific Northwest. We got snow on Sunday (which we never get and don't know how to drive in) and more snow yesterday. The roads are a mess, so all schools are closed and so is the gym. Usually I'm at the gym 6 days/week and at Zumba 3 days/week. The first day the weather was…

Fashion advice: What would you wear for a pub-crawl?
A friend of mine is having pub-crawl for her birthday this weekend, and I'm stuck on what to wear. It's starting out at an Irish pub and ending up at a rock-and-roll, dueling piano bar with several other stops in between. It's all within about 4 blocks and the temperature is supposed to be in the high 30's(F), although I'm…

Tasting calories? - Cooking (esp chefs)
So, I start Culinary school in 2 days and I'm pretty excited, but I'm wondering how to account for tastes. I can't avoid tasting because that's how you make sure that things are seasoned correctly. If it's something like 1/4 of a croissant, I can figure that out. I can put recipes in the recipe calculator, but how do you…

Meal replacement shakes?
My schedule is about to go into warp speed. I need something I can have for breakfast and lunch weekdays *while driving*. I was thinking about meal replacement shakes, store-bought ones that I can grab out of the fridge and go. I need something that tastes good, is balanced diet-wise, and around or under 300 calories each.…

Does loosing weight make my joints look big?
This is just something that I was wondering last night. I've had RA in my knees since I was 9, gained most of my weight in college, but now I'm almost back down to high school weight. I've been working like crazy on strengthening and toning my thighs and though they are not shrinking quickly, they are getting smaller…

Question for Maintain-ers
What is you life like now that you have lost your weight? People are always saying "this isn't a diet, it's a lifestyle change", but I'll be honest: I don't know if I can keep this up for the rest of my life. The constant calorie counting is so stressful, for myself and my family. There are so many times when the choice is…

Woman seeking new workout shoes
I need a new pair of workout shoes. I've had a pair of Reebok Walkfit for years that i loved, but I've literally worn through the sole. My family offered to get me a new pair for Christmas and I'm looking at my options. I have knee and ankle problems, so I need a lot of support and cushioning. My workout is circuit…

<< Rewind <<
You have been given a magical rewind button. When you hit the button it will rewind the last *2 hours* and you can make a different choice. The catch is: IT WILL ONLY WORK TOMORROW and IT WILL ONLY WORK ONCE. Once the clock hits midnight, it's worthless (so you can't save it). If you use it, you will remember the first…

Accurate HRM alternative?
Hi folks! My mom and I work out together often, and she is more interested in fitness recently. I got a HRM a few months ago and LOVE it. She's been looking at it enviously, and I was going to get her one for Christmas, but she asked her doctor and he said it wouldn't work for her. She had a problem years ago with…

Christmas lights help!!
Any electrical geniuses out there? We're putting up our pre-lit tree (it's 2 years old). When we put it away last year it was fine; all the lights worked. There are 3 sections that all have plugs to plug in to a central extension cord. The problem is, half of the lights are out on each section. We've checked all the bulbs…

In the news...
I especially like the quote: "This illustrates very well the sky-high aesthetic demands placed on the female body," spokesman Helle Vaagland said. "The demands are so great that H&M, among the poor photo models, cannot find someone with both body and face that can sell their bikinis." Clothing Giant H&M Defends ‘Perfect’…

Zig-zagging calories AND exercise?
I've been reading about zig-zagging calories and it really interests me. The problem is, the website I've been looking at for calorie recommendations (http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm) assumes a constant workout on the days you are working out. Now, my burn varies by a LOT. Some days it's 900+…

HRM question
Those of you who wear a heart rate monitor, when do you turn them off? Do you shut them down as soon as you're done with your reps/run/etc? Or do you wait until your heart rate goes back to the normal range? I've noticed that it can make a difference of 50+ calories depending on how hard I've been working.

School project - What would you do?
I'm working on a project for my college Nutrition class. We've been working on this project for 4 weeks and it's due tomorrow at 3pm. We have to do a 35 minute presentation, PowerPoint, and handouts with study questions. Since I don't have class today, I had volunteered to type up the handouts and get photocopies made this…

Any chefs? - Looking for shoe advice
I'm starting Culinary Arts school in January and I need to get some good shoes for the kitchen. They must be black with no-slip soles (like Shoes for Crews or SafeTstep). I also have knee problems. I know lots of chefs wear clogs, but I'm wondering if the sneaker type might have better support. I've worn Reeboks on…

When is breakfast?
I've been seeing tons of articles saying that it is easier to lose weight, and more likely to stay off, if you eat breakfast. My question is, how much does it have to be and how early does it have to be? I've never been a breakfast fan and if I eat even a yogurt before my workout, I feel so sick during. (Don't even start…

One year later...
I was feeling particularly discouraged yesterday, so this morning I asked my favorite trainer at the gym to print off a comparison of my weight and measurements between now and a year ago. I started on MFP in October of 2010, but I took a 6 month break earlier this year while living overseas (2lbs gain in 6 months). The…

Healthy body measurements?

Lumpia numbers?
My mom and I went to a lumpia-making party last night. We brought them home and cooked them for dinner, and I counted them according to the values in the food database (110 calories/2 lumpia). Ours were made with Lean beef and ground turkey instead of the regular beef and pork, but it's always better to give leeway on the…

Are "ethnic" Halloween costumes a bad sterotype?
I saw this article today: http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/26/living/halloween-ethnic-costumes/?hpt=us_t4 I happen to like dressing up in the outfits of different cultures when I get the chance. I was Cleopatra last year and for Halloween this year will be dressed in a Chinese costume. These were both in good taste (nothing…

Gross! Education strikes again - DO NOT READ IF SQUEAMISH
I've been taking a Food Safety and Sanitation course for college and we had to learn some of the food borne illnesses. Today I was eating some smoked salmon and found one of the parasites we studied in class. :grumble: It's fairly common in fish from this part of the Pacific. It completely grossed me out. The thing…

HRM: Fat Burn vs Fitness
I'm still new to my heart rate monitor (Polar FT7) and figuring things out, but I have a question about the Fat Burn zone vs the Fitness zone. It is almost impossible to stay in the Fat Burn zone during my workout. It's like I *look* at a piece of equipment a my heart rate goes over that. Even when I'm trying to be really…

What would you do? - Mopey, girly, relationship question
I'm in a long distance relationship. I lived in Italy from January-June this year and started dating my boyfriend there at the beginning of February. Cadio calories vs Strength Training calories ???
Okay, I'm confused. First, I go to Curves for Women. It's circuit training with 30 seconds of cadio (jogging in place) and then 30 seconds of strength training. They have a fancy system (the official name is Curves Smart) where you put you tag in each machine and it records your range of motion and number of reps. The…

Finally found cute boots that should fit my calves!
I just had to share :) I've been searching for a pair of cute/sexy looking boots for a long time, but they never seem to fit my calves (sigh!). My calves seem pretty muscular, not any obvious fat, but they're just big (15" around). And they aren't going anywhere. In the last 35 lbs I've lost, my calves have gone down 1/2…
