I'm a "Constant Craver" - what are you?
Took the test from the BBC Horizon program that seeks to work out what "type" of eater (or overeater) you are and then suggest different diet strategies which may lead to successful weight management.... I came out as 55% Constant Craver, 38% Feaster, 7% Emotional Eater. So basically I want to eat all the time and when I…

113 miles - hybrid or road bike?
I've entered the British Heart Foundation London to Bath "century" (actually 113 miles) in October and am wondering whether to use my usual hybrid or borrow a road bike for the event. I've only done one century before and that was on a hybrid bike but it was an unsupported ride so I could go at my own pace, which turned…

Please don’t fear temporary weight gain
Hope this helps people who feel anxious about relaxing their iron grip on their diet for special events and holidays (vacations). There are so many threads where people have successfully lost weight but don’t feel able to enjoy their food and have what seems to me an unhealthy fear of natural and temporary fluctuations in…

Recommended navigation aids for Audax events?
Did my first Audax (100km) event yesterday and loved it apart from the nightmare of trying to navigate in an unknown area using the cryptic paper route sheet. e.g. "R at green and immediate SO at X". Spent too much time worrying about directions and not enough time enjoying the beautiful New Forest countryside. Getting…

Hypertrophy/strength gains without progressive overload?
Wonder if you can help with advice regarding a training block that I’m in? Due to a misspent (but highly enjoyable!) 20’s and 30’s I’m stuck with a collection of chronic injuries that are conspiring to cause a stall in my training progress. Knees, back and to a lesser extent elbow and shoulder injuries. 2013 was a very…

Results of a recomp after 7 months - stats overload!
For people interested in a recomp rather than cutting / bulking cycles to lose fat and gain muscle while maintaining I thought I’d post my results so far. Stats are from a BodPod analysis in March and again today. One thing to note is that although I’ve been mostly maintaining I did have spell of deliberately losing weight…

My first century ride.
Although I've been a member of this group since March I've felt a bit of a fraud as I had never actually done a 100 mile day!! Well now I have. Saturday was the big day for me. My challenge was to do a 100 miler on my trusty old hybrid - due to neck and upper back issues I can't ride a road bike with drop bars for…

Second wind - how does that work?
I know most people in this group are strength training focussed but here's a cardio question for a change which I hope some of the more learned people on here might be able to answer! Background. I’m training for a long cycle ride in the summer but the cold weather is stopping me cycling outdoors so I’m doing a lot of…

This is why I weigh every day....
My weight is 172lbs as recorded on MFP. I weigh myself first thing in the morning, every morning. Last Tuesday I was 170lbs, one day last week I gained 5lbs of weight in 24 hours (weight not fat remember). After a couple of very enjoyable evenings out my maximum for the week was 178lbs - an 8lb difference in high and low…

I'm not special after all......
I had my weight, body fat percentage (with BodPod), height & BMR clinically measured yesterday to give me a new baseline to work from now I’m maintaining. This then allowed me to put all my calorie intake / burn and BMR data for this year into a spreadsheet to do a bit of geeky analysis…. Now I’ve always regarded myself as…

BodPod at Kingston Uni
I've just had my bodyfat/TDEE/BMR calculated at BCOM in NW London using a BopPod but noticed that it's also available at Kingston Uni. See details at http://www.bodpodlondon.com/

Calling out to fellow old farts.
Happy birthday to me - 53! (How on earth did that happen? Better decide what I want to do with my life soon....) Don’t really celebrate birthdays that much but tend to look back over the last year and set targets for next year. Maybe something in this wall of text might inspire or motivate my fellow coffin-dodgers?…

CHALLENGE: That's my limit - what's yours?
Gave myself a fitness test - how many calories could I burn in an hour? ANSWER = 903 Elliptical trainer - arms and legs. Straight in, no warm up or cool down. Maintained c.160bpm for the hour (top of my training range). Bit dizzy at the end so couldn't have pushed any harder. Probably not sensible for someone my age but…
