5/3/1 questions
Hey, so my wife and I are going to try out 5/3/1 and see how we like it. The short workouts should fit well for us. I started planning the programming for us using this link: http://www.muscleforlife.com/get-strong-strength-training/ One question (so far), when I calculate the warm ups, it says to use percentage of 1RM. Is…

Short, daily, lifting program
Hey all, wife and I did stronglifts 5x5 from January until June, it went pretty well but summer came and we took a break. Now in the fall, we've had some changes in our schedule and with our kids, which have made it very difficult to fit in a 90 minute lifting session, so we've had a very hard time getting back into a…

Excessive stiffness from low weight squats
Hey all, so maybe some tips or advice here. I took a break from lifting for most of the summer due to camping, unpredictable schedules, etc. Before stopping, I was at 225lb on the SL 5x5 program for squats. I'm trying to get back into a routine (not fully successfully yet) of lifting 3x a week so I started again Monday…

Why you should take everything you read on the internet with a grain of salt
If you remember recently a 'study' went around the internet with the headline "Chocolate helps weight loss!". Well, it was all designed to prove how ridiculous the junk science diet industry is. The article below explains it all. http://io9.com/i-fooled-millions-into-thinking-chocolate-helps-weight-1707251800

Ladies who lift on a deficit, how do you keep progressing?
Hey, asking for my wife. We're doing the SL 5x5 program. The problem is, she is finding it a little frustrating to be stuck at the same weights, then deloading, then up to the same weight, then deload, etc etc. She's gotten to the following max weights before failure, and is pretty much stalled with all of them after…

Two minor NSV's for today
1. I squatted 200 pounds 5x5 last night! (I realize this is small potatoes, but it's a goal I had from the beginning when I started with just the bar) 2. My 42 inch waist pants are too loose. Moving into 40's!

Weight loss as a math problem, but which numbers are wrong?
Ok, so being a bit of a nerdy guy, I've decided to approach this whole thing as a bit of a math exercise. I have been tracking my calories in since early January, and wearing a fitbit one (no HRM) everywhere. I enter weightlifting exercise (following SL 5x5) into fitbit's portal, but do not enter running excercise, as I…

Anyone else having problems on web page this morning?
I can't enter food, it just sit's at loading...when I choose the meal. Also can't click 'like' on anything in my feed, it just jumps me to the top of the page. Have tried multiple browsers, same behaviour. Android app works fine. Would post in tech support forum but there's no create thread button there.... Anyone else?

If you eat at maintenance and don't exercise, what happens?
Really simple question (hopefully), for those of you who know physiology. If you eat at maintenance (whether at a healthy weight or overweight), and do no significant exercise, does your body fat % change?

Lower back twinge from squatting
Hey, so yesterday I was doing my 5x5 lifts and during my 2nd set of squats I felt a bit of a wobble/lean forward and when I corrected it I felt a twinge in my lower right back area, above the glutes. I finished my set, but immediately realized it was pretty tender. I didn't do any more squats yesterday, did my bench press…

Omron has been lying to me!
So I've been tracking my body fat for some time using one of those Omron handheld ones. It's been reporting numbers that started as high as 39% at 278 pounds in mid 2013, and gradually tracking downward, reaching a low of 34.3% at 253 pounds this past Saturday morning. I always figured since it was pretty consistent and…

Lifting shoes?
So I'm still new at this whole lifting thing. I have a decent quality pair of running shoes that I use for all my exercising. I saw something somewhere the other day that running shoes are not good for squatting? Is this true? As a beginner, do I care?

TDEE calculator at IIFYM is full on spam engine, where's that other one?
So the TDEE calculator at http://iifym.com/iifym-calculator/ which the regulars like to point people to may have been useful at one point, but the site is so spamified that it's basically worthless. It popped me over somewhere else, then wouldn't stop creating popups until I finally had to kill chrome to get the page…

Bar length and banging the plates on the power cage
Hi, so my wife and I got ourselves a power cage in early January and have been working our way up the progression in SL 5x5. We have a cheap olympic bar and plates set from Canadian Tire. It works for now, but I'll need a new bar and some more plates eventually. Anyway, here's my question. When I squat (also an issue with…

When to try for a 1 RM?
I'm plugging away at SL 5x5, about 6 weeks in at this point. I see these people with their 1RM in their profiles and it makes me want to know what mine is. So far I've talked myself out of it as I don't want to mess up my progression. I'm only approaching failure on OH press so far, the rest of the weights I don't really…

SL 5x5, does the order matter?
Hey, my wife and I are doing SL 5x5 using a power cage in our basement. Often (usually) she will exercise earlier in the day than me, and so I just start with whatever exercise she finished with (ex: today is Squat, OH Press, Deadlift), so the bar is sitting on the floor, so I am thinking to start with deadlifts to…

Asking for my wife - Breastfeeding mom, setting calorie goals without compromising milk supply
Hi folks, here's the scenario, would appreciate input from those who have relevant experience or insight. We have a 7 month old baby (our 4th), who my wife is breastfeeding. He has also recently started eating solids, but my wife tells me the solids do not make up a significant portion of the calories he is receiving at…

Why I know it's going to work this time
Hey folks, love the community here. Been lurking lots, starting to post a little bit lately. I've been trying to lose weight my whole life, have done so successfully a few times, but always with some crazy diet. Never could figure out how to maintain at a lower weight, mostly because I didn't get there by eating a…

5'8" men, before/after?
Hey, I'm 5'8" male, currently sitting around 256lbs (down from 275). Working my way down but wanted to get an idea of how I might look at some various weights under 200 pounds. I'm 'big boned' so I don't have aspirations towards the 160's, but feel like 180-190 would be a pretty good weight for me. Anyway, curious if any…
