Great! I'm glad it is going well for you.ms_smartypants wrote: »Nvmomketo -That's awesome that your boys already know what they want to do ...wishing them the best
Well.... We'll see. LOL My 13 year old is very bright but socially a bit awkward (it is suspected he is very mildly autistic) and I would love to see him challenge himself a bit more. You know what it's like, they can progress very quickly at home in areas they are good at, and in math and history he is a whiz. I think he would enjoy the independence of welding but he's not overly creative so I have some doubts.
My 11 year old wants to build and design things, ergo the engineering. He's a smart cookie too so we'll see if that continues. This one is quite social and I think he'll enjoy the engineering parties most. LOL
My 8 year old wants to drive a train and eventually own a gas station. LOL WE figured out how to do the train bit but I have no idea how he'll get enough $$ to own a gas station.
We'll see. They are all still so young.0 -

I am still gaining weight ....I am not sure what I am doing wrong ....I measure everything with a food scale and whatnot ....I weighed myself this morning and the scale said I gained another 3 pounds ...I am frusterated big time UGH0

Just looking at ur diary what's for breakfast? It says 420 cals but no listing of food, I would break it down and remember it as a meal so u can just click meal if you have the same thing every day, if you just list it as quick calories it's not adding carbs, fat and protein to your daily totals0
-
420 is my caramel BPcoffee ...its not quick calories ....its written has Megan's caramelBPC0
-
Your diary looks like it should be okay. Your kcals are low and you are hitting your macros with greater accuracy than I ever manage.
The only thing unusual I see is your water intake. Are you really drinking 18 -19 cups of water per day? That seems like a lot. If you have a great thirst, be aware that is one of the signs of diabetes. I'm hoping you are just very conscientious about water intake.
... I would cut back on water a bit if you can. All that water could affect electrolyte levels. You may end up needing even more sodium.
If you are accurately measuring your foods, meaning your diary reflects your food intake, you should be losing. My guess is you will lose soon. All you could do is wait.
maybe...
When I stalled my weight loss because I was eating too much, I fat fasted for about 2 days to help me get back on track. I had between 500-700 kcals for a couple of days and it helped me lower my appetite and get me back into ketosis. It also helped me lose my treat cravings (too many pork rinds and nuts with coconut).
Maybe a very short "fast" would jump start you? I doubt you need it but it could be an option.

I gained 22 pounds using DaVinci sugar free caramel syrup in my coffee! All macros were on point. That's the only thing had changed! I finally began to lose again, although slowly, after eliminating it completely (all splenda)! It can happen! You need to consider it if you use any form of splenda! Good luck!0

22 lbs?! Really? Wow! That is amazing... And scary as I just found a sugar free coffee syrup that is planned to go into my stocking for Xmas. I will have to be careful with that!0 -
I have 3 bottles of torani sugarfree syrup and I was using 2 Tablespoons a day for my coffee I am down to 1 Tbsp now ....What do you recommend Karlottap?0
-
Yikes. I just purchased two bottles of davinci sugar free syrup as well.. I guess I just have to give it to someone0
-
Clearly what works for one may not work for another. In the end the scales will tell the story it the sweetener is absolutely the only variable we change.0

Does sugar free syrup have any calories? If not I'd be interested to hear how it can contribute to weight gain?0

"One study of 3,682 individuals examined the long-term relationship between consuming artificially sweetened drinks and weight. The participants were followed for 7-8 years and their weights were monitored. After adjusting for common factors that contribute to weight gain such as dieting, exercising change, or diabetes status, the study showed that those who drank artificially sweetened drinks had a 47% higher increase in BMI than those who did not.
One concern about artificial sweeteners is that they affect the body’s ability to gauge how many calories are being consumed. Some studies show that sugar and artificial sweeteners affect the brain in different ways.
The human brain responds to sweetness with signals to eat more. By providing a sweet taste without any calories, however, artificial sweeteners cause us to crave more sweet foods and drinks, which can add up to excess calories.
At the University of California-San Diego, researchers performed functional MRI scans as volunteers took small sips of water sweetened with sugar or sucralose. Sugar activated regions of the brain involved in food reward, while sucralose didn’t. (56) It is possible, the authors say, that sucralose “may not fully satisfy a desire for natural caloric sweet ingestion.” So, while sugar signals a positive feeling of reward, artificial sweeteners may not be an effective way to manage a craving for sweets."

A second, more direct way, is more theoretical at this point - by changing the microbiome in our guts to make our guts more efficient at pulling calories out of food for our bodies to use (i.e. we eat the same number of calories, but absorb them - essentially making our bodies more fuel efficient) :
"Last year, though, a team of Israeli scientists put together a stronger case. The researchers concluded from studies of mice that ingesting artificial sweeteners might lead to—of all things—obesity and related ailments such as diabetes. This study was not the first to note this link in animals, but it was the first to find evidence of a plausible cause: the sweeteners appear to change the population of intestinal bacteria that direct metabolism, the conversion of food to energy or stored fuel. And this result suggests the connection might also exist in humans.
In humans, as well as mice, the ability to digest and extract energy from our food is determined not only by our genes but also by the activity of the trillions of microbes that dwell within our digestive tract; collectively, these bacteria are known as the gut microbiome. The Israeli study suggests that artificial sweeteners enhance the populations of gut bacteria that are more efficient at pulling energy from our food and turning that energy into fat. In other words, artificial sweeteners may favor the growth of bacteria that make more calories available to us, calories that can then find their way to our hips, thighs and midriffs, says Peter Turnbaugh of the University of California, San Francisco, an expert on the interplay of bacteria and metabolism." http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/artificial-sweeteners-may-change-our-gut-bacteria-in-dangerous-ways/0 -
Thankyou so much @neohdiver for your detailed response0

5lbs is not much really. Probably just a reflection of the few extra things you've eaten. I too struggle with losing weight, 22 lbs in 9 months, and nothing in the last month, even at 1500 cals and no cheats. I, too, am over 200lbs still. This is what my last month has been like.

Yes, from June1 through june15 (after adding this to my coffee) I gained 22 pounds, while maintaining my macros! I did not experience cravings, or increased hunger, nor did I mindlessly eat! Some people refuse to believe this for some reason.
What I learned, with the help of great friends here, is in some people (not all), it creates a cycle of inflammation making the body retain water and continues as long as the offensive food (splenda) is being consumed.
I am not saying that everyone will have problems like this. I just want others to be aware that it does happen.
I didn't replace the syrup with anything. I have learned to like the taste of just creamer.0 -

Water retention is very different from weight gain - that is the reason that when you say you gained 22 lbs (especially when you add the detail that you experienced that gain in 14 days) that people don't believe you. To have a true weight gain (as opposed to a temporary retention of fluid that will drop quickly when the cause of the retention is resolved) you would need to consume 5657 more calories than your body needs to operate every single day during that period. An artificial sweetener is incapable of doing that.

@GaleHawkins, you helped me with an article back then with regards to this very topic. For me it was a "gain" on the scale that took me six months to lose. This state, that it put MY body into (because of fibromyalgia I read in one article) continued for a while, even flared my fibromyalgia off and on during that time, and I believe I am just now overcoming the effects completely. All scientific evidence disputes this, but I know what I choose to put in my mouth. That can't be disputed. So, no, for me it wasn't a temporary fluid retention. I almost gave up on this woe because of it, but I'm so glad I didn't.
Thanks for your input, and support, @neohdiver!0 -
@Karlottap while I do not remember the article I did find the below by a doctor on MFP.
I think one reason I did not drop one pound my first 6 months on this WOE was my inflammation level was SKY HIGH. My pain levels fell like a rock by 30 days in so that tells me a lot about my inflammation levels at the start.
Artificial or real 'anything' may cause a major inflammation in humans and I expect in other animals as well. I had a hunch it was either grains and/or sugars in my case.
30 days after leaving both cold turkey having my pain drop like a rock proved me to be correct on one or both points. Logic and medical states sometimes do not go together.
Actually they do but we just know too few medical facts today. There is a reason why splenda was causing a 22 pound weight gain in your case but we just do not know what it was in your case today.

Thank you @GaleHawkins. I wish I knew how to keep, and reuse, information here! You have always been available to lend a hand!
Hey @ms_smartypants, I just wanted you to know my experience with keeping macros, and seeing scale increases, after consumption of this substance. I went from January through June 1 without any sweeteners. I did the Meativore May challenge with great success and planned to remain that way. I added this syrup to my coffee (the only dietary change I made; what advantage is there to being dishonest about this?)for the two weeks, before pouring it down the drain. It wasn't until a few weeks after I stopped it that I began to feel thin again.
I'm sorry to bring a negative into something I know you enjoy during the day (I still miss it, but not enough to try it again!). I certainly hope you find your answer!0 -
Thanks Karlottap .... I will continue with it for another month ( I just dropped my calories recently) ...if I continue to gain in that time then I too will pour it down the drain0
