This year, in an attempt to revitalise this challenge a little, there are a few changes that I'd like to try and implement... First of all, I think that we should expand the challenge to take in a few more of the one-day "semi-classics" and long established races.

So, with that, here's a few Dates for the Diary... These dates are possibly subject to change, but are as per the "Classics List" on www.steephill.tv.

Cycling Classics 2016:

Trofeo-Laigueglia - Sunday Feb 14
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad - Saturday Feb 27
Kuurne-Brussels-Kurne - Sunday Feb 28
Le Samyn - Wednesday Mar 2
Strade Bianche - Saturday Mar 5
Milan-San Remo - Saturday Mar 19
Dwars door Vlaanderen - Wednesday Mar 23
E3 - Harelbeke - Friday Mar 25
Gent-Wevelgem - Sunday Mar 27
Ronde van Vlaanderen - Sunday Apr 3

Scheldeprijs - Wednesday Apr 6
Paris-Roubaix - Sunday Apr 10
De Brabantse Pijl - Wednesday Apr 13
Amstel Gold Apr - Sunday 17
Flèche Wallonne - Wednesday Apr 20
Liège-Bastogne-Liege - Sunday Apr 24

Break for Giro d'Italia Grand Tour Challenge - May 6 - May 21
Break continues for Tour de France Grand Tour Challenge - Jul 2- Jul 24

San Sebastian - Saturday Jul 30

Break for La Vuelta Espana Grand Tour Challenge - Aug 20 - Sep 11

Milano-Torino - Wednesday Sep 28
Il Lombardia - Saturday Oct 1
Paris-Tours - Sunday Oct 9

The more observant of you will have spotted that some of the races are in bold. These races are the ones that were in the Classics challenge last year, and are IMO the "true" classics. As such, they will be attracting a slightly higher points tariff than the other "semi-classics"

Last year we had quite a few people comment that it was a shame that they had an event on the Saturday, and therefore wouldn't be adding anything to the Sunday where the race was being run. So, this year, we're changing things a little...

For any of the races on a Weekend, you are allowed to book A SINGLE STRAVA LOGGED RIDE, from either the Saturday OR the Sunday. This of course doesn't apply for the Omloop/KBK weekend, as there is a race on Saturday and Sunday. As per last year, anyone who has entered any of the "pre-classic sportif rides" that are based around these classics (and generally are run in the couple of days prior to the actual race-day, over the same route on closed roads) gets to enter their ride from the sportif, provided photographic proof of competing in the sportif is added to the thread.

Off the top of my head, I think that this year the Paris-Roubaix and RVV both have sportives run the day before the race, though I'm happy to expand this to any other races that also have a pre-event sportif. (L'Eroica doesn't count, as it's at the other end of the summer to the Strade Bianche BTW ;) )

For any of the Mid-Week Races, the ride has to be on the specific day of the race.

As to points scoring, again there's a small tweak.

For the "True" classics, the BOLD ones in the list in the first post, points are awarded for the first 15 finishers as per last year...

Longest distance gets 25 points, next 20, then 16,12,11,10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,and 1. Spot prizes / bonuses also awarded - these are announced before the event, and are usually either picture bonuses (get a point for a picture of a windmill or cobbles say on paris-roubaix day, or say a roadside chapel on Il Lombardia day.)

For the "Minor" classics, they will attract a lower points tariff (and points only for the first 10 finishers)

Longest distance gets 20 points, next 16, then 12,10,8,6,4,3,2,and 1. Spot prizes / bonuses will not generally be awarded for these races. Any prizes that ARE awarded will be photo-challenge based, rather than needing pre-planning and advanced "shopping" to purchase specific "treats" ;)

    Trofeo-Laigueglia - Sunday Feb 14

The Trofeo Laigueglia is an early season road bicycle race held annually in Liguria, Italy. From 2005 to 2014, the race has been organised as a 1.1 event on the UCI Europe Tour, but as of 2015 was promoted to 1.HC.

Generally accepted to be the Italian "season opener" - as with most early season races, the weather can play a large part in procedings, though at least being on the Italian Riviera, under 100km up the coast from Nice, theres a better chance of avoiding snow than up in Belgium.

Thread Now Open for submissions for the Trofeo-Laigueglia...

If you're not sure if you'll be claiming your ride from Saturday or Sunday, and wish to wait and see which ends up the furthest, please be aware that the entries thread will close on Monday 11:59am GMT (UK Time) - so, practically, for the US, you really would be best advised to post your rides on Sunday Evening before you go to bed.

Please do not post anything other than ride submissions (and a short ride report if you wish) in this thread - keep all the banter and discussions in the appropriate discussion thread.

Good Luck, and Be careful out there - weather's not forecast to be particularly kind this weekend...

    All now Entered.

Please note, Only you're first entry in a weekend will count - should you wish to "keep options open" and pick the best of sat/sun rides, don't book anything on the saturday. I really don't have the inclination to go back and edit things because you changed your minds. Ok folks :)

If I get a chance, I'll try and add in a few rides from my Strava Feed as well - might give us an idea of what we need to "shoot for" on the sunday...

There's still 2 rides, not actually logged in here, that i've picked up from Strava... As one of them is actually in 2nd place at the moment, I'm going to PM the riders and "suggest" that they get their posts in here ASAP.

As this is the first ride of the challenge, and the next stage isn't for a fortnight, there's no MASSIVE rush to get the final results sorted, but i'd like to at least try and "establish a pattern" of closing off on the day after the rides wherever possible...

well done to everyone who went out there and rode - especially the ones in the real cold stuff... Chapeau Folks!!

current "Strava Harvest" rides from declared Riders are as Follows...

    @BigG59 - https://www.strava.com/activities/493376585 - 99.6km
    @Spatialized - https://www.strava.com/activities/493549373 - 37.0km
    @verdemujer - https://www.strava.com/activities/492846992 - 5.8km

I'll be firing these three riders a PM to ask them to try and confirm the ride in thread ASAP (or if they're away from internet at the moment, to at least confirm to me via PM that they wish to claim. If that happens, I'll make a confirmation post in here...)

and, I think that's it folks - we've one "provisonal" but as it's a good way out of the final points scoring anyway, I think we can draw a line under the Trofeo-Laiguglia

    Results Here...

    Congratulations to

#1 - @Jakess1971 with 104.2km - the only person to break the century barrier this week.
#2 - @BigG59 with 99.6km - I think my OCD would have kicked in and I'd have had to ride up and down the street a couple of times to get the round 100km personally
    #3 - @jillyian with 85.6km - another strong early season ride.

Thanks to everyone who went out there and braved the elements to get a ride in early season like this. We've a weekend off next week, but we're back on the Saturday AND the Sunday on the weekend of the 27/28th then the 2nd March with a little trip into Belgium for the Omloop, K-B-B and Le Samyn respectively. Sounds like fun!

(this thread will now close until race-time... all discussions/banter/wellwishing in the discussion thread as per normal folks...)

Omloop Het Nieuswsblad - Saturday Feb 27

Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, previously Omloop Het Volk, is a single day cycling race in Belgium. It is the opening event on the Belgian cycling calendar, usually held on the last Saturday in February or the first in March, and holds significant prestige because of it. Due to its early calendar date, it is characterized by often cold weather, coming as a contrast to the early-season stage races in the Middle East or Southern Europe. The race starts and finishes in Ghent, East Flanders, and addresses the Flemish Ardennes in the south of the province, featuring numerous short cobbled climbs, before returning to Ghent. It is organized by Flanders Classics.

First held in 1945, the race was organized by Flemish newspaper Het Volk, in response to rivaling newspaper Het Nieuwsblad’s Classic, the Tour of Flanders. The Omloop, with the start and finish in Ghent, used much of the same roads as the Tour of Flanders, and is for that reason often used in preparation for the bigger event. The race was known as Omloop Het Volk until 2008. When newspaper Het Volk merged with Het Nieuwsblad, the race was renamed Omloop Het Nieuwsblad for the 64th edition in 2009.

Since 2006, a women's edition of the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad is held on the same day as the men's race, starting and finishing in Ghent, of approximately 130 kilometres distance.

Further details at the official website - http://www.omloophetnieuwsblad.be/en

    fvnwa5u5fi0p.jpg

    Kuurne-Brussels-Kurne - Sunday Feb 28

Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne is an annual single-day road bicycle race in Belgium. It is ridden on the last Sunday of February or on the first Sunday of March, one day after Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. First held in 1945, since 2005 it has been a 1.1 event on the UCI Europe Tour.

Together with Omloop Het Nieuwsblad this race forms the Belgian opening weekend of the road cycling season. The course is less selective (the last climb comes 53 km before the finish line) than the Omloop which gives sprinters a better chance for winning this race. As of 2015 no rider has completed a double in the Belgian opening weekend by winning both Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne.

The name of the race however is somewhat misleading, as the race doesn't actually reach Brussels. After starting in Kuurne, the race heads out in the direction of Brussels but the turnaround point is near Galmaarden, some 25 km west of Brussels. On the way back, the race heads to the Flemish Ardennes where a number of hills (Edelareberg, La Houppe, Kanarieberg, Kruisberg, Oude Kwaremont, Knokteberg, Tiegemberg and Nokereberg) are climbed before finishing back in Kuurne.

Three times in history the race was cancelled due to bad weather, the last time in 2013. In 2010 the race was run in extreme weather coming from the Cyclone Xynthia. The race was shortened by 20 km because of a fallen tree and only 26 of the 195 started riders were able to finish in Kuurne.

If you wish to have a look at the website, i'd suggest using a browser that supports inline translation. Seems that they forget that there's a big world outside of Belgium ;) - http://www.kuurne-brussel-kuurne.be/

Thread will open for submissions on Friday Afternoon 26th February, and close probably late Monday Afternoon 29th (all times GMT)

Our regular Saturday training route. STRAW - Steady Training Ride All Welcome.

We have two group on a Saturday, the "fast" lads and "rest of us". The STRAW is for the "rest of us".

A cold day but nice and dry so I got the summer bike out, seems like that was a good idea as the other lads had similar plans, so it was our first "full gas" ride of the year. Ten of us set off and 8 made it as a group back to the coffee shop and a not too shabby 28+kmph average. The closest we get to a dusty road are the narrow lanes were the dried on cow sheet creates an aromatic spray - few had mud guards (summer bikes). Now planning tomorrow's ride.

    Omloop Het Nieuswsblad Ride...

    27/02/2016 - 67.4km - https://www.strava.com/activities/503451662

Day was as grey as my Dad's old Pit-Vest, and cold as my exe's heart. Best thing I can say for the weather was it didn't start spitting rain/sleet until about half way... or, more accurately, at the point it started spitting rain/sleet I thought screw this for a game of soldiers and turned back for home. Really disappointed - today was probably my best/only chance of hitting the 100km mark for the February Strava Grand Fondo - with the slower recovery rate i'm lumbered with from the med's, I seriously doubt i'm going to be going out for another 4-5 hours tomorrow on top of this. I'll try and get a few more km's in the bank - but it's more likely to be my typical week-day ride than a proper Sunday Special.

Still - it's way further/longer duration than I've managed since they stuck the bits of wire-mesh in my heart, and to be honest, I was feeling surprisingly good as I got home (though, not good enough to ride around in circles for another 33km... a hot shower and a warm bowl of soup was beckoning)
