    Twice around a two mile loop. Each repeated section (half mile split) was faster than the first time around. Felt real good at the end.

    Half Marathon training continues with a 32 mile week capped off with a 12 mile run, part of which was on the HM course's biggest hill. 2:23:46 over 12.1 miles for an 11:53 average miles pace. A couple of big hills thrown in to get used to them. One VERY steep down hill segment. Also had an upper body lifting session. Blessed are 70* mornings. Beats the hay out of the 90*+ Friday afternoon 4 mile training run.

    An observation, I'd rather run up a steep incline than run down one.
    4 weeks to go ;-) Who else is training for a Half Marathon this Fall? Please, share your experience.

    Got mine the same weekend as yours. I hate hills so I decided to start running at a ski resort, no avoiding the that way.

    Keep up the good work! You're going to do great!

    And we hit a snag. Caught a cold/virus/flu which kept me off the roads for two days, Monday and Tuesday. Plan called for 7 and 6 miles on those days. Rest of the week is 4 miles, cross training, 4 miles easy and 13 miles. Do I pick up where left off, or pick up one of the longer runs?

    just pick up where you left off. I had the same thing, but I also just reduced the mileage for that week and am starting up again anew this week. I need to get in some more longer runs, I've been capping most Long Runs at 10-11 miles, of course, I'm averaging close to 40mpw, so more might not be better for me....

    Mine is in January. I'm starting small-currently on two 3-mile runs a week, one long run that I'm raising gradually and would be up to 5 this week (if not for a random 5K and OCR training course this weekend, so it'll be 5 next week) plus three days a week strength training-Strong Curves. Rest day is the one before the long run and I usually do a teeny bit of gentle yoga the day before and also immediately after the run so I don't lock up. So far I'm enjoying it. I did have to introduce gatorade given the heat that I run in and my sensitivity to it. October 8 is my first of three 10Ks to check on status.

    Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm finding it really motivating. Sorry to hear you've been ill.

    Thanks. Just a cold. Should be back on the road today. If fit nothing else a slow jog for a couple of miles just to get back out. This course has several bailouts where I can continue long or just shut it down short. Enjoy

    Back on the road again. 6 miles @ 11:48 per mile. Felt good. Still congested but breathing wasn't too bad on the run. Easy tomorrow light on Friday and 13 Saturday. And the beat goes on.

    You're getting a lot of miles in! What's your miles per week look like? What mileage are your long runs topping out at?

    Keep it up!

    For the past 6 weeks; latest to most recent:

    24 (long 10);
    25 (long 10);
    30 (long 11);
    32 (long 13 [This stunk, it was too hot and I walked the last 2 miles averaged 13:02]);
    26 (4 miler in this, no long run, total for this Saturday was 8 miles 2, 4 & 2); &
    32 (long 12).
    This week Monday and Tuesday completely off, sick, 6 miles on Wednesday (11:48 average), Cross training today an easy 4 on Friday and 13 (@ 12:00 per mile) Saturday.

    Daily, for example, last week Mon. 6; Tues. 6, Weds. 4, Thurs lifting, Fri. 4 (easy) and 12 on Saturday (This run covered 3, or so, miles of the HM course including it's longest uphill, 11:53 average mile) . This weeks long run will also include that hill. Which, truth be told, isn't as hard as some of the others I've found and included.

    Three weeks to race time ;-). Then I need an off season training program.

    How are you doing? Anyone else training for this silliness? join in.

    Those look like good weeks, though it looks like you're going over 35% of weekly mileage on your long runs. I learned the hard way that that's not so great. However, if you're doing good with it, that's awesome.

    I'm maintaining right now, in the mid 30s miles per week and working on maintaing speed over distance, in the hope that I'll be able to pull off 9:09 miles at my HM.

    You're doing great!

    " in the hope that I'll be able to pull off 9:09 miles at my HM."

    Breaking 11:30 per mile would be an achievement for me over a HM.

    My next HM is on Sunday September 18.

    Not sure whether to do my last longest run (17 km) the weekend before, or a fortnight before.

    Had my biggest month in August (219 km / 136 miles).

    Last long run was 28 August's 15 km.

    If you're following a training plan, what does it say?
    If you have a coach/trainer, what does (s)he say?

    I'm still new at this so, I don't really know. My long runs for the past weeks have been 10 miles, 10, 11, 13, 12, with 13 miles scheduled for this Saturday. Looks like coach has "penciled in" an 8 mile long run for the following Saturday. I'm doing a 5K the following Sunday, a week before the HM, but am doing not as a race but a training run to support a local town group.

    An easy 17K (10 miles, or so, right?) should be OK. But. I'm no expert. Rank novice to be truthful.

    Thanks!

    I followed a training plan for my first HM, but I've forgotten what it said.

    I did my second HM just when I felt I could, and then this will be my third.

    Asking around has made me decide to do the longest long run 2 weeks prior, so tomorrow.

    THREE WEEKS OUT!!!

    Recovered from my cold earlier in the week. Took Monday and Tuesday off. 6 miles on Wednesday, Cross training on Thursday (25 minutes easy elliptical with 30 minutes lifting, core and stretching), 6 miles Friday and 13 miles Saturday. 6 and 13 on consecutive days might not have been the best of ideas as my legs were tired and heavy at the end of the 13. But I got through it. 2:33:00 for the 13. My goal of a Half Marathon in 2:30 might be in reach ;-) Used the longest hill from the HM course in the 13. Still not the biggest longest hill on my course. Hopefully mine is tougher than the real one. Been doing a lot of hills in my training. Wondering what a flat course is like.

    Chime in all with your training.

    I like to train harder than the race. The event should be fun if you've trained well. I think my set of hills are harder than the H. M course. At least I hope so.

    Back to back 5Ks is impressive. Doing well, more so.

    Heat here, Northern NJ broke for this morning. 72 * felt nice.

    "Short 3miler". I once asked my coach when did 4 miles become a short run. The answer, when you do 10 for breakfast;-).

    Keep going and enjoy.

    Not so worried about tapering for 2 weeks before my HM (Sept 18) now.

    One of my running gurus says it's old skool. ;)

    I was thinking today's 18 km would be really hard, since I did a distance PB of 219 km in August, and have run every day in September including a parkrun 26 second PB, but I was good today. But I would like to do a PB for my upcoming HM, so I will try not to run hard for at least a couple of days beforehand.

    Orphia:

    This being your third HM you probably have a good idea of a proper taper for you. Do what you've done prior to your current PB. This being my first, I'm in uncharted territory. My longest race so far is 4 miles. Seems like a sprint compared to my long training runs.

    Just back from a vacation in the Berkshires. 22 Miles on the hotel treadmill. Local roads, no sidewalks, limited shoulder not conducive to road running. 5 K training race tomorrow then an easy week to the Half.

    On a positive note, the heat broke. in the 70's now. Much much better. ;-)

    OK so a "training" race is a race and I seem to lack self control.. 28:18 (PB) second in age/gender group. Felt good, feel good, so no harm done. Now on to that Half.

    Well, it's over. September 25 has come and the race is run. A clear sky, cool temperatures with low humidity. Slight breeze, if any at all, but the course remains hilly. Started at what I thought might have been too fast, 10;30 ish per mile, but couldn't slow down. Finally decided to keep it up as I felt good, could still maintain a conversation with those around me, so WTF, if I die I die. I didn't. 2:17:10 from a goal of 2:30. Not too shabby for a first time, right? Average pace of 10:30 was pretty steady start to finish.

    Congrats to Coach Hamel, e-mail to be supplied upon request, a great plan which, as I did, can be followed via e-mail with no personal contact with her, Feed back and advise satisfactorily provide via e-mail.

    Strike the Half Marathon off the bucket list. Mission Accomplished.

    How did everyone else do?
