There really are nerds and geeks everywhere making anything fit their passions...

Not a Skyrim player, but did the whole Everquest ---> World of Warcraft thing. I still dabble, but don't have the time to play hardcore. It's also one of the reasons I gained so much weight, so there's that.
Just need a shield to go with it:

I'm serious considering getting one or two of these. As I've aged I've come to believe in functional training as a compliment to my normal powerlifting. There's more to life than 1 rep maxes when you're into outdoor stuff, and I'm not really interested in getting huge. Just really, really strong.3 -

Former WoW player myself (hence the paladin point about the hammers earlier). The mace seems fantastic for one armed work. Ten pounds seems light, until you've been swinging it for twenty minutes3 -

@Gallowmere1984 - Showing my age here, but Paladins made me think AD&D! LOL I played most of my games on a tabletop with a board, not online. LMBO3 -

The girl and I are actually huge fans of AD&D ruleset videogames, and we've considered investing in what's needed for tabletop. However, with just two people, it's kinda bleh, and neither of us have any other friends who take any kind if RPG seriously.
Between that, and Cyberpunk 2020, I was in love with pen and paper for a long time.1 -
You might consider checking out meetup.com. Our local Meetup site has a LARP group... that uses real weaponry. These lovely nerdy folk meet up at a local park once a week, dragging blunted longswords, axes, and daggers, and fight magically amongst one another. It's a real joy to watch, and looks like a hell of a workout.6

Buy a legit iron longsword and swing that around for an hour every couple of days. All the epic feels, and you'll build all kinds of strength in the process.
Lol not a bad idea actually. But I doubt I'd be able to find one here. And plastic won't work
Won't be longswords, but have a look at your local martial arts schools. Many sell practice katanas and short and long staves. Swing one of those around for an hour or two each day and you'll get yourself quite a workout! (I do recommend learning the proper form for them, though. There is actually a right and wrong way to hold and swing a katana, and your hands will hate you if you connect with something harder than cheese and are holding it wrong.)3 -

You know, I got invited to the Legion beta and am actually getting into it again (PvP is fun again!), so hubby and I pre-ordered and got going again (we've yet to find a good RPG that we can play together cooperatively to replace it).
But I've been having the conundrum of finding time to fit exercise in. I'm a fan of an hour-long walk, but I'm having a hard time balancing that with spending time with family and working (son doesn't have that kind of endurance when just walking; Pokemon Go has helped, but he gets bored of it easily, and this heat and humidity we've been having hasn't helped). We were swimming for a while, but the lake is under a health warning right now.
So! I remembered that at one point in time, someone found a way to control WoW with a Kinect on the computer! Unfortunately, I have a first-gen Kinect, which means it uses the proprietary connector instead of USB, which kind of shot that idea down for now, but the adapter is only about $20. Totally worth trying out once I get some spare cash!
Can you imagine how much of a workout that'd be?!2 -

Look up the Virtuix Omni. I am sold when that thing goes live, of for nothing else than to play Bethesda games, a la Fallout and Elder Scrolls.1 -
I loved AD&D back in the day, too. Still have a lot of friends in WoW and Legion looks pretty good, so it's tempting to make the time...
Total derail of this thread, sorry!2 -
Lol I love how this thread turned into a gamer thread. What a bunch of nerds we are!5

That thing is unbelievable. Can you imagine progression raiding with that thing? Holy smoke...no more fat gamers, ever!3 -
<-- WoW and EQ2 player here too, not to mention years of AD&D every Monday night before I started having kids. My husband and I met at D&D night
I was the paladin who was always rolling a one...

Scrolling, reading, and totally clueless as to what you are talking about except for the references to actual martial arts equipment, lol. Sounds like a fun way to get your exercise though.2

Then just go buy some sledgehammers of different sizes and weights. A couple of five and ten pound one handers, then a thirty to fifty two-hander. Every hardware store has them, and hammers are just as (if not more) badass than swords, but that's my paladin bias talking.
I prefer the daedric battleaxe of damnation myself... But I'm also an archer. I would also fancy a staff, but mages are more known for their magic than their strength...
I'm mainly a sneaky *kitten* Archer, myself lol. Oh wait! An alchemy lab! Better whip up a few low carb potions!
Oh yeah. Assassin all the way, me. I love a Deadric dagger. And that Deadric Bow you get in Morrowind is my all-time favourite weapon of choice. That's gotta be a good upper-body workout,right?1 -
This is NOT what I was expecting when I clicked on this thread... hahaha!2

Hey, I'm sure that being overly generous with time dedication to video games (paired with generous Cheetos consumption), is what landed a lot of us in the condition to need this website.3 -
I was going to suggest weighted walking too but swords sounds like more fun.. Have you looked into reenactment groups? We have a Viking and medieval group in our city. The vikings are bad *kitten*! I've seen their demos at a number of events now... bit of family geekiness here too.
Anyways, find a group and you could fight with broadswords, or spears or axes...
Archery is a bunch of fun too. Most archery shops can set you up with lessons.1 -
I think swinging a sledgehammer would be lots of fun....reenactments would be pretty gnarly as well...maybe I should find some leather motorcycle gear to wear as my own armor...I'll have to name it! What do you guys think about a slingshot? Probably wouldn't burn many calories, but what a stellar skill to have!2

Oh....was that TOO dorky?3

The problem is, I ALWAYS play an assassin/sneaksie thief type, so joining a group would be out for me. People tend not to enjoy the whole back-stabbity thing.

Aaaaah HAHAHAHAHA! No. They do not.1 -
Slingshot.... get one that braces against your arm or you won't get much power. It is the BEST way to get rid of crows, magpies and squirells in a residntial area.
Yeah, no. Not much of a workout though.
And the backstabby thing would fit very very well with the viking group. LOL1 -
Lol we have a Geek Fest once a year. But it's a 6 hour drive away from me.1
