Well I did low carb for a week (<50g/day). It was really hard for me. I think I will do intermittent low carb. I'm not ready to string this stuff together for a long time and really don't want to either unless I need to for a medical reason. I did lose 4-lbs in the week which is a lot faster than normal for me. Not sure how much was water. I did eat less cals also, probably about 1600/day vs 2000/day. I found out that my bg levels in the morning were maintained under 100 even when putting down 100g of protein in my shorting eating window (20-23 hour fast or 1 to 4-hr eating window). I may go to an 18:6 so I can eat some of my protein earlier and not all in the evening so I can allow more carbs in the evening.

In October I had an A1c of 5.7, which surprised me. I started keto and three months later my A1c is 5.4, which is normal by standard health guidelines. However, it seems high to me after being keto for the period the test covers. Am I wrong to think this? I thought I might transition from keto to low carb at some point, but now I'm wondering if I need to stay keto to keep diabetes at bay.

    How's it going, @asgentr?

My highest A1c was a nice double-digit 10.3 when I first diagnosed myself with T2D. (This came 3 years after my doctor might have alerted me that my fasting blood glucose of 110 was too high and needed frequent monitoring with post-prandial testing, A1c checks, etc.).

After 4 months of keto (and switching from generic metformin to Glucophage), my A1c decreased from around 7.0 to 5.5. Both BG and A1c have continued to drop gradually since then.

My last A1c was a surprising 4.7, with around 30g net carbs per day and 100-110g protein. That test was on a 10-minute finger test at my endo's office. Staff claimed to have tested the instant kits against their lab, but they couldn't put their mitts on the data. I'm skeptical, but I figured I'd give myself a couple weeks to gloat before I have the lab recheck it.....

My BG often drops into the upper 50s-60s, which would pull the A1c average down. Of course, A1c gives you no insights into your typical BG lows or highs, so there's still no substitute for regular, daily BG testing!
