I'm still not comfortable asking for..

No bun. When I first started my journey with keto back in May, I was at a restaurant and asked for no bun with my burger. The waitress gave me a look (I will never forget) and told me "Oh, you're one of those." Today I tried again and received the same response (different restaurant). I feel like a wasteful human being and want to be able to NOT GIVE A DAMN what people think. I know what I should do is just smile and remember I'm the one on this journey, not the waitress but easier said than done, ya know?
Please tell me I'm not alone? Is this even an issue for y'all?

What do those truly gluten intolerant people do? Im sure they order bunless burgers!! I'm surprised anyone bats an eye given how customizing orders has become a norm for any and every reason. I admit I'm shy about it and have yet to order a bunless burger at a place that doesn't already offer it in a lettuce wrap. But you're not being wasteful...ordering the bun and then tossing it would be. I say just keep doing it. You don't owe anyone an explanation but if you feel better giving one, just say bread upsets your digestion or causes you some kind of problem. For most of us here that is true!4

Wow I've not had this problem yet. My guess is it's because I live in a very touristy area so I guess my no bun request is probably the most normal request they r getting. As for it something that bothers you, you can always reflect your feeling in your tip.5

How rude! I live in a small city in the South and haven't really had any trouble.
And asking for no bun is not wasteful; it's not like you're getting a bun and then tossing it (though I think that's fine, too, if they don't understand or honor your request).

I can't say I've noticed nasty looks. I don't go out often but the last couple times I have, it's been burger with cheese & bacon, no bun, and caesar salad (*) instead of fries. If there was 'a look' I guess it went over my head.
Or maybe LCHF is more common around here and they're used to it?
(* I always forget to tell them no croutons lol.)1 -
Maybe I should have said that while the town I live in is quite large, it's predominately the older generation who have lived here for before it was even incorporated. It's probably a more mental thing and it is why I stick to mostly home cooking.1

I'm a celiac... I tend to grill the wait staff and make them meet me at the kitchen door so I can read packages. I still tend to get sick a good third of the time that I eat out.... I've mostly given up on eating out. LOL
OP, I hear you though. I get very self conscious when I have to ask for accommodations. I still do it, but I'm red faced while I do it. Of course if they give me attitude like that, I just get annoyed and snarky.... and very very cheap when it comes to the tip.5 -
I tell them I'm diabetic and act like they naturally will know that means I can't eat carbs (like saying I'm allergic to peanuts...). Usually, they nod like they get it.
(If the bread comes anyhow, I take it with me and drop it the nearest place that has birds or squirrels nearby. )6 -
You could leave as your "tip" a note reminding the waitress who the customer is and the importance of making the customer happy if she wants a monetary tip the next time.7
-
You could leave your tip between your, er, buns....6

I go as far as to ask them to hold the bread or potatoe and ask for extra veggies.. .never had a problem. I did order gluten free pasta once though and because of the reaction I know it was not gluten free.
I asked at one place what was gluten free and was told the potatoe soup was when I asked what they used to thicken it they told me four and then you saw the light bulb turn on and I was told sorry nothing here is gluten free lol.
I stalk the menu before going out to eat now.6 -

The worst part about not asking for no bun is that often half the cheese is wasted by sticking to the underside!!12

Imagine asking for no plants as well! Lol
Yesterday I ate at O Charley's with a friend. I didn't want to spend $23 for the ribeye so I asked how big the burgers were because the weight wasn't noted on the menu. Each patty was 8 oz.
I asked if I could just get 2 beef patties with cheese but only if the cheese was cheddar and not American cheese.
I didn't have any problem with the special request because I don't want to buy food I don't eat. I also said I don't want to pay for 2 whole burger meals so can you find out if I can just buy the patties. I ended up with 16 oz. of burger with cheddar for $8.
It's not this easy everywhere to get a better deal but I don't really care what people think so I'll ask and at least get no bun or sides even if they won't cut me a break.
I have the same thing when I'm ordering alcohol. I always get tequila with club soda (not tonic) in a salted glass. I stress 'not tonic' because if I don't, I get tonic 50% of the time and have to send it back. Which I do.2 -

I grill the staff, I ask, I demand re-assurances and I order bunless burgers all the time. It did not take me that long to get used to it, it is my body, my health so I decide what to put into it.
You are the customer, so ask for what you want, and let the tip show how happy you are with the service. Luckily, in the UK I have not had many issues getting my food served how I want it.4 -

And if they're real snooty about it, also consider a chat with the manager, and tell the waiter as much.
Managers can't fix problems they don't know about.
OP - it might help to practice at places that specialize in burgers. 5 Guys, Red Robin, etc. They're used to such requests and shouldn't bat an eye. It's a good way to get a positive response and build confidence.5 -

Agree - no tip! I have never had this problem in Minnesota. Even at the coffee shops if you ask for coffee with heavy cream they'll reply the order with "a heavy americano" - it feels like lots of people are ordering this way now.
When I was at 5 guys last weekend I asked for the bunless burger and the cashier asked if it due to allergies - I was confused because normally they don't ask that and she said "are you doing low carb or do you have an allergy to wheat". Then I got it!!5 -
I've ordered with no bun in several states from CA to MI without any complaints from staff. The only time they comment at all is sometimes if they ask if I want it wrapped in lettuce. Otherwise, they just know I'm going to eat it with a fork.
Once, at a busy truck stop Arby's, they called out my name and order when it was ready to go pick up at the counter. There were a lot of other customers waiting because it was busy a the time. After the Arby's staff called out "Midwesterner! Max roast beef, no bun." I heard one of the other waiting customers say to herself "No bun?!" She doesn't get it, but so what? She can have the stale bun while I enjoy a tub of roast beef... I win!7 -
I tell them I'm diabetic and act like they naturally will know that means I can't eat carbs (like saying I'm allergic to peanuts...). Usually, they nod like they get it.
(If the bread comes anyhow, I take it with me and drop it the nearest place that has birds or squirrels nearby. )
Awwww that's adorable!1 -
It does seem hard at first, but I do hate wasting a bun or fries or whatever knowing for certain that I am not going to eat them. What a waste of money, time, and food. Restaurants need to get it together....This is the wave of the future!1

I've been doing lettuce wraps from 5 Guys a lot lately. I was also a little surprised when they asked if it was an allergy or not. Eventually I asked why they ask. They said it was because they change their gloves for allergies to eliminate gross contamination. I didn't even know touching a bun was enough to give someone an allergic reaction! Which makes me curious why other places don't ask too.3 -

They certainly seem appreciative!
If my cats would eat burger buns, they could help themselves, but they're off carbs since they switched to kitty keto kans & kibbles.3 -

Oh yes, I had that question at 5 Guys as well. It was only the one time I ate there, but thanks for the reminder. Good point on why others don't ask. I guess they don't care as much or maybe just are not aware.1 -

My kitties also eat low carb. One of them is diabetic and has been off insulin for almost a year now, all thanks to eating low carb. The food they get has about 4% carbs last I checked.2 -

Fancy Feast Classic Turkey and Giblets - I buy several cases at a time because I have 2 large kitties that eat a lot.
ETA: I just checked again and found this: http://mybeaconvet.com/clients/10103/documents/FANCY_FEAST_VARIETIES.pdf
It says 5.45%! So perhaps I should switch to Chicken. Fish doesn't agree with them, otherwise I would consider those varieties.
ETA again: The Classic Turkey and Giblets has 1.5% fiber according to Fancy Feast website (which doesn't list total carbs for some reason)... So wherever I found 4% in the past (I think a feline diabetes site) must have counted net carbs at 4%, fiber at 1.5%, and protein / fat for the rest.1 -
Thanks for all the replies, you wonderful people! I'm glad a lot of you haven't experienced it and what a good idea to practice at burger joints.2
