A1C 6.0?!! LCHF since last August

How concerned should I be about my A1C being 6.0? I'm reading that means I'm pre-diabetic, but I have zero signs or symptoms and the paper my results are on say my expected results were between 3.0 and 6.0. I've never had it tested before a week and a half ago and just got my results today. My fasting glucose is always good when it's checked at my physicals. Why on Earth is my A1C so high when I've been in ketosis for almost 9 months? I'm trying not to freak out.

All I can say is it must have been higher before going keto.

Fasting blood sugar is a terrible measure to look for high blood sugar really.
You have to test several times a day, before and after meals to look for spikes.

You may want to try some fasting. Either intermittent or 24 hours as that seems to be the way to get the fastest results correcting blood sugar issues.
It would be a good idea to get a meter and start testing several times a day. Maybe the test was inaccurate...???

Thanks, Bunny. The test also said I was male, so... I do intermittent fasting every day with only coffee with HWC. That's been my routine for most of the time I've been LCHF.

Hmmmmm. I'm feeling suspicious about the accuracy of the test.
Would still be a good idea to test after meals 1 and 2 hours just to reassure yourself.

The A1c test is a long way from foolproof! If you follow @Sunny_Bunny_ 's advice to test after meals, within a few weeks you'll have a pretty good idea how your BG is really behaving.

You also might want to go back and look at your triglycerides and other tests that were done in years past to see how they compare to recent results.

Thank you, RalfLott. Here are my numbers from the same time my A1C was tested. dqdhq0u2gjdh.png

I will take SunnyBunny's advise and purchase a glucose monitor.

Fasting glucose of 82 is looking very good to me. I think you need to ask to have the A1C checked again. It seems unlikely to me if you have been LCHF for nine months AND did not have high numbers before AND had a fasting number of 82. Or you could get a meter and take some readings. You can see if the numbers are stable very quickly.

Just in case you're curious... the Bayer Contour Next EZ is accurate, reliable, and cheap - you can buy soon-expiring test strips off eBay or Amazon. You can also get a Precision Xtra, which will test glucose or ketones, but the test strips are pricey. Both run about $18 at Costco.

I am VERY suspicious of the accuracy of that A1c given the other results and the fact it said you were male. Labs have been known to make mistakes. Also, A1c is said to be accurate to 0.5 meaning that even if that was your test results, your A1c might be 5.5.

This. I'm wondering if they mixed your test results up with someone else's! :o

YES! I got the Bayer EZ Next Contour starter kit for just over $6 and replaced my $100 for 100 Accu-Chek test strips habit with the Contour test strips now, for $25 or so for 100 strips on Amazon. Very happy about that. Also, my strips don't expire that quickly. I paid $22 for 100 the first couple times, and about $25 for the last order.

I like the Relion Prime from Walmart. You can get the strips at the local store or online. It is $9 for the meter and $17.88 for 100 strips. You would need a lancing devices too and some lancets.

Sorry, meant to say Amazon. And it was just over $6. Here is the link I ordered from. And here are the refill strips.

I agree with the others that that seems off with such good FBG and everything else. Not an expert though! Let us know what you find out from checking your BG more often.

A glucose meter hasn't been in my budget, but I was going to get one soon. I was going to have to go to HR to request a re-test, but today I received an email saying the A1Cs from the time of my screening were all being retested due to machine error. I'm not going to worry until I get my new results some time in June.

You can actually frequently get a free meter and decent amount of strips. Just Google for "free glucose meter" and you'll likely find a deal somewhere. If not free, then often under $10, like mentioned above.

If your employer is behind this, it is to your benefit to test lower rather than higher. If it were moi, I would get the meter and start testing right away (then cut your carbs until the test, if necessary).

@AshStout83 If your test indicates prediabetic your doctor's office should be able to provide you with one. Reps leave them for this purpose. You should test once a day at different times for a week or so to get a good measure. Also, if your doc writes a rx for strips/lancets your insurance should pay at least part of it. I work for an endocrinologist and this is the protocol we follow. But sounds like machine error is more likely.
