Runners that need some nutritional accountability

@runs_on_espresso ah didn't think of the heat as that much if a hazard, but yes it is there.
I was saved! No sweet treats, just a big block of brie. And it's so salty and while I like cheese, I can also pass on it. So had a small sample but didn't munch away like I would if it was sweets.
Now I'm just hungry haha.2 -
Hahaha @CMorning99 ! I think back to some of the things we did, and I heard, when in the AF that would be really frowned upon these days. I don't think I would make it now. I'm glad to hear you are fairly free to say what you want still.
@Avidkeo I'm so glad it was cheese and crackers instead of sweets today!0 -
Hey how is everyone?
Call last night, just one call out. Going out tonight to farewell a colleague who is retiring. She's our team leader, and a real inspiration. She's in her early 70s and has the energy of someone half her age. I'm going to miss her.
I've planned some light food for during the day, and checked out the menu. It's a shared platter type of place. I'm thinking dim sum and fried cauliflower. With tiramisu for dessert!2 -
good afternoon folks!
Chugging a long today. My running partner really pushed the pace in the hills yesterday and I have a bit of heat in my legs and a pulse on the bottom of my feet, definitely need this rest day today and most of tomorrow before our color "run"...aka dodge the kiddos. I think calories were a bit low yesterday bc I am a bottomless pit today.
Started the day off with another "mess" breakfast (potato, egg, sausage, bacon, gravy, cheese) and then had a canned coffee (I cant keep my eyes open today) and a TastyKake fruit pie ... meh, running makes me feel skinny at least LOL. I refilled the office candy bowl, my boss saw it and grabbed a handful and the promptly flipped me off LOL...sorry you are working on a Mr. Universe bod, cause I am not
I think I am tired b/c my old kitty is having a hard time sleeping through the night b/c of aches and pains. He gets his pain meds around 8pm and he seems to wake up around 2-3am and fusses around on the bed. I think that is about the time his meds start to wear off. Sucks getting old.
No other real news here though. Still waiting on funding line to start moving so we are hanging out. Hubby is looking at an apt tomorrow and hopefully he hears back from the contract folks down there today.3 -
@CMorning99 What is "canned coffee"? Like a can of a starbucks or the like or something horrible like an MRE coffee thing? It made me think of a canned version of terrible instant coffee and I shuddered at the thought of you having to drink it. LOL!
Exams
Good news today. The B turned in to an A (91) and the pharmacology was awesome, a 94.4. I should study more often! This was suppose to be hardest exam (cardiac) so I am happy to have "learned" any of it. Whew. I am still looking at B averages though.
I made it through my clinical day okay. My low back hurts and I need ice cream and a nap. I realized today how the others are so much more comfortable with patient care and I am stuck on not wanting to do people stuff. In my head I know what to ask and how to prioritize, but when it come to applying it all... ugh I think I need to work in imaging or surgery where contact is limited and short.
I have another bruise at the base of my thumb where i get a sudden pain with certain movements again. Perhaps I can remember to ask the HCP next week about it.2 -
@CMorning99 Sounds like your husband is getting started on things he needs to do. That's great! Sorry your old kitty is having such a hard time.
Yeah for the A @swenson19d ! Glad you made it though your clinical too.1 -
Yay for the As @swenson19!0

I hate my state. Governor just lifted all restrictions and cities can't enforce mask mandates. Private businesses can but there's gonna be a mix & they don't all enforce anyway.2

Juat got back from dinner, stuck to plan. Definitely in deficit. Not sure what though lol.
17k run in the morning.1 -
I have a question for you medical types on here. I am trying to get in touch with my cardiologist because my BP is running around 122/90 and my HR when sitting is in the upper 80's. At night, my resting HR is in the 60's. Also, when my PCP read me the results of my latest echocardiogram, they indicated that my heart wasn't relaxing like it should. Should I be concerned?
I had called the cardiologists office on Monday and left a message, asking if he had seen the echo. I haven't heard back, so am going to call them again this morning. Just wondering your thoughts also.

From my very limited understanding and not medical advice
The numbers aren't alarming but I realize that they are elevated from your baseline The EKG is curious- that's next semester in critical care (careful if you google- often you find the worst possible scenarios). Keep on the doc over it. Stress your concern with the deviation from normal. COVID is proving to have cardiac symptoms months after. I'd bet that would be what you are experiencing. I have an instructor (heavy, mid-late 30's) that is having a racing heart at rest (120). There are reports of heart attacks post covid in healthy people in their 30 & 40's months later.
trying to use my education... this isnt really any help.. just thoughts...
If the heart isn't relaxing enough you get an increase in afterload, decrease in cardiac output, higher BP, higher pulse. This can be due to a disruption in the cardiac cycle between the SA and AV nodes and on through the heart. The nodes are like little batteries that fire in sequence and create the electrical current through the heart.
should you be concerned?
yes. of course anytime you notice anything out of the norm for you you should be concerned and take it to your doc. is it something sinister? my uneducated guess knowing COVID is likely the reason- probably not (but get that from your doc). I'd ask about the risks associated with with the EKG findings and what to watch for and what they are seeing post covid.
overall impression IMO
follow up, stay hydrated, and get adequate rest. Might monitor your caffeine and any other stimulants (cold meds) that may overexcite the heart. Be sure to share all your meds, herbs and supplements with your doc, some of these have surprising interactions and effects. Don't stress over it, baseline may change (hopefully temporarily) post COVID and just be mindful. If it is something, are in great health and already have a relationship with the cardiologist-don't stress. Bug your doc for answers.

@quilteryoyo - I am no medical type but I would be concerned and want to ask my cardiologist too. I hope you can get in touch with them today. Also how you are feeling? Still tired when you go for a run? Because that can also be a symptom. @swenson19d has a good point too about COVID after affects
@RunsOnEspresso - sat here shaking my head at your post... I feel like some of these states just want to see us go into another wave. Even CA is starting to open up faster than what many think is appropriate although thankfully we still have a mask mandate. You just have to do the best you can to stay safe. Wear your mask and stay away from others, that is what we continue to do.
@swenson19d - so happy that you did well on your test and made it through the clinical round. I had actually typed in a post asking how it was and never posted it...
People - interacting with patients has to be hard but maybe if you look at them as parts to a puzzle to figure out? I know for sure I couldn't do it. I had issues dealing with people in person in the bits I had to for my job, especially towards the end. It was just too hard to be 'ON' and be engaging the way it comes natural to some people.
@CMorning99 - your description of your boss is so funny! Hope you hear about the funding soon so you can get things moved. When do you start the new position? Will they give you some time in between to move and get settled before you start?1 -
I saw my PT for the 1st time yesterday and she really made me sore. I was achy and in pain most of the evening and spent a good part of it sitting on the heating pad.
She is pretty sure my glutes are not participating much and said my hamstrings are now tired of helping them out. She also thinks it may be why my knee has started hurting in the other leg. Essentially my glutes not participating has exacerbated the arthritis inflammation. So I now have a new set of exercises to do before I go out for a run and yes as long as it doesn't hurt (at all) I can run. She also had me show her what I had been doing (hamstring yoga) and she said they were all ok but I was doing most of them wrong (ie turning my hips so my back is doing the work and not my flute or hamstring) and no I shouldn't be working through the pain.
In other news - DD got the permanent job she was negotiating for. They gave her everything she asked for too (4/10 hour shifts, pediatrics only (she will be floating to different clinics) and $20k more per year). Dh was really worried they would go with someone without any demands and lower salary requirements but they really want to keep her. Yay! She starts mid April and because she has been contracting with them for 6 mos her benefits start immediately.6 -
Thanks ladies. Still waiting on a call back from the Cardiologist. If they don't call back by 3ish, I think I'll call and see if I can figure out how to talk to a receptionist instead of leaving a message for the nurse. Not sure that was an option on the numbers to push on their automated message. I'll just hang on and not push anything....or maybe push the number for an appointment. LOL I'm not real concerned, but would like to know if something needs to be done. When I was taking the beta blocker, things were more normal on the BP side, but my HR was going too low.
@shanaber Glad you got some answers from the PT and hope the new exercises work. Congratulations to you DD! That is awesome!

@quilteryoyo - when I want to get around an automated phone system hitting 0 over and over often works. if it doesn't I am no worse off but it will more than likely get to a receptionist.2
-
@quilteryoyo hope you've heard from the Dr by now.
Like @swenson19 said, the numbers on their own aren't alarming per say. 120 systolic is fine, it's well within normal range even if your normal is lower. And upper 80s for pulse is still within normal.
When I had that ocular migraine my BP and pulse were both higher than my normal but they weren't worried.
That said, I didn't have major heart surgery within the last couple of month, so taking your concerns to the cardiologist is definitely appropriate. I hope they respond soon.

Weight up a little today, but salty dinner and still feeling some DOMS from Thursdays HIIT lol. Just had breakfast and about to go out, do my long run.
It's a beautiful morning, still, calm, cool. Perfect running weather.1 -
@shanaber I do like the aspect of figuring out a medical mystery. People interaction is difficult for me, but I think I can overcome that. I notice the nurses don't sit around and think about the patients conditions and question why this and why not that or whatever... In the ER they did more of that, which my be more of my niche. I think too much and need that option to use it. Perhaps the nurses already understand more than I do (probably) and don't chew on stuff like I do.
I ate too much. my weight is up and I am feeling miserable. I need to eat better. I have had no desire to do so and I assume it is school stress. But I am in a good spot, caught up and have my resource materials in use (opened the books), neuro soon and hip surgeon consult... Hair cut today.2 -
@shanaber My boss is great, we have a fun working relationship and think alike. I am still not sure what I am doing for the new job and when I asked I was told they are "shuffling" people around. I am fine with whatever. I am going to have to hit the ground running when I get there between getting ready for mom's memorial the last 2 weeks of may and the trial looming.
My PT always blames glutes, lower back, and upper legs for knee pain. He says that we sit all day and the glutes are disengaged all day. I really work on doing activation exercises several times a day to keep from becoming quad dominant and pulling the kneecap out of whack.
@quilteryoyo Yeah, just like the Starbucks coffee...triple shot espresso.
Yesterday was a much needed rest day, I even took a sleep aid and I feel a lot better today. Trying to make adult decision on food today and so far on track. Not tracking cals, but not gorging. I got on the scale and it has crept up another .3lbs...dangerous now 2 weeks in a row. Afternoon we have our 5K color run, I think more than anything it will be fun to be in that energy again, even though I am not sure a lot of running will happen LOL.
Still waiting on a funding line to move. I think we might have a good lead on a job for DH at the new base. I don't think it is what he wants, but there is time to move around. I am sure it is a solid pay cut but a livable wage. I am going to pitch to him tonight that if he isn't quite ready to leave yet to get an Air BnB for a month or 2 vs signing a lease. That would make things so much less stressful and then we wouldn't have to move furniture for him either. I really hope he goes a long with it.

The nurse didn't call so I called and talked to the receptionist. She said she would get in touch with the nurse, who was helping a different doctor today, and have her call me back. She did. Yeah! Anyway, she looked at the Echo results and said there was nothing there that they would be concerned about or want to follow up on. She does agree that the HR and BP needs to be addressed, even though, as you all have said, it is within the "normal" range, so nothing of an emergency type intervention needed. She was going to talk to the doctor and either call me back today (didn't happen) or Monday. So, it will be Monday before I know what they want to do. I'll just keep watching it so I can give them more information, if needed.2

Great news @quilteryoyo . My BP has gone from 110/60 to just under130/80 this last year. I am just ignoring it for now, I know it's diet and no running... and that I've gained weight. yuck. Maybe it'll spur me into trying to make changes.
I was cleared to enroll for next semester today. ugh... I cannot even think of next semester right now, LOL!
Hair cut share because I didn't think it could look normal at this length. I can never get it to lay this flat. DD had about 4 inches cut off and it is just below armpit length. I don't know how she does it. Mine is "crazy" at this length.
I look so old, but I'm getting use to it... another reason to eat better and find some exercise.2 -
@swenson19 love the haircut!
@quilteryoyo good news about the ecg, hope your HR and BP settles over the weekend.
Was thinking about my weight, I had expected it to be lower by now based on usual drops. But then I've been getting some spotting the last few days, meaning my period is trying to happen. Which always retains a bit of water for a few days then has a big drop. So hopefully by Monday I might have a woosh? Lol. Stop obsessing Kim, it's going down. And the trend is dropping. I keep comparing to this time last year, but I need to stop that too because last year I stopped progress in April, and that's not happening this year.1 -
@Avidkeo Thanks. Keep on track and remember even if your weight isn't moving you are still getting stronger.
I need to figure out an easy go to snack/meal that is a better choice. I may have time to walk today to the gate and back, just 0.25 of a mile. I am hoping that I can push through and gain some strength and perhaps that will help in the long term as a pain intervention. I noticed the weakness the doc was referring too, I think. If I am going to lay down on the couch, I can't easily lift my right leg on to it. It's moving the leg inward and up to the couch. I will have to investigate which muscles that activates and see if I can work on them. Or I could see the PT this summer.
It's nice out today and I am missing being a runner or even a walker. Bruddah Bear and Cori are sure enjoying it. DH is working on enclosing the porch and I suggested moving the TM out there from the garage, perhaps I can get some weights too and prompt a lifestyle change. IDK I need to do something.
DH went for tacos yesterday at lunch, was gone 2 hours and returned with no tacos. I inquired after his work day was done and he said he bought a gun instead. I suspected his offer for taco was a distraction ploy. He handed me the gun and wanted me to feel how light it was, I declined. Swear I'd put it to my head without thought right now... I don't think he understands how fragile I still am. I did guilt him in to fajitas from the Mexican restaurant though. Don't worry, the guns are locked up and I have no plans or a key. It's just traumatic to have the reminder of Alex thrust in my face like that. He should know that.
Food changes and a walk today.3 -
@swenson19d Glad you were cleared for next semester, even if you aren't ready yet. Love the haircut. I can't imagine how much physical pain you are in. I hope the walk was okay. Sometimes people just don't think about how what they are doing can affect others. Hugs.
@Avidkeo You are doing great weight wise. Hope you have a woosh over the weekend.
2 -
@swenson19 sometimes people just don't think. The connection between Alex and the gun probably isn't in your husbands mind, or to him it's just a gun, where you see it differently. That said my culture to guns in general is so appalled by then I'd think DH had lost his mind if he bought one home! But that's NZ. Hugs. It's not easy having reminders like that.
Well i had that woosh I was expecting, down 700g (1.5lb) overnight. Yay. Sunday is my lazy day. Woke to no power, not sure what's going on but not worried. I'm sure it will come on again soon. The kids are playing, I'm relaxing. It's a good morning!4 -
Yeah for the woosh @Avidkeo ! And for the relaxing day.1
-
@quilteryoyo - I am glad you finally got to speak to someone at the cardiologists office. Hopefully they will just want you to keep monitoring yourself or have you wear a monitor for a few days to see what is going one.
@swenson19d - your haircut is great and you definitely don't look old!
I hope you were able to get outside and enjoy some of the nice weather!
Guns - I was raised with them, not against them other than the semi-automatic/automatic one. I am actually a very good shot but we have no guns and see no reason to have one at home. I am sure like @avidkeo said that your dh didn't even think of the connection. He probably should have but it likely never occurred to him.
@avidkeo - yay for 1.5 lbs gone! I think I found it. I was up yesterday when I weighed myself but today I have been running to the bathroom - I am guessing too many carbs and the associated water retention.
I have been doing my PT exercises plus some core work and boy was I sore yesterday and this morning. Thought I would go for a run and ended up walking yesterday. Not sure if it was from what I was doing or hangover from the PT. I am honestly pretty shocked at how hard these are. There are only 4 exercises and you do just 3x30secs on each leg...Yikes the clamshells are the worst and I am so inflexible - therein may be the root all of my problems (knee, hamstring, whatever). She also gave me a different Piriformis stretch that is super affective. I have always done the figure 4 stretch and this one you pull your knee towards the opposite shoulder rather than pushing it away. Also it is hot here today, over 80F so I will hopefully get Hobbes out for just a short walk later if it cools down a bit. Maybe after dinner.
1 -
@shanaber Thanks. I hope the PT helps in the long run. Sore muscles make it hard to run. You are doing great, listening to your body. I hope Hobbes is all better - from being sick and the dog attack.
I am back under 140 pounds this morning, barely. I've been hovering between 140 and 142 for a few weeks. I'm very glad to see it back down, even if just a little.3
