Book/web site recommendations please

Does anyone have any recommendations for learning about the health benefits of low carb that is a fairly quick, easy read, but is very convincing? Either books or web-sites.

My mom is in her early 70s, overweight and pre-diabetic. She just finished her treatments for cancer a few months ago and is cancer-free now. Unfortunately she was just admitted to the hospital for gall stones and is having her gall bladder removed tomorrow, provided they can get her blood pressure up. It dropped low enough to land her in the icu earlier today during a procedure. I’m hoping this convinces her to finally change her eating habits, but if I could provide her with a place to start learning that isn’t overly scientific, it might help.

I have Phinney and Volek’s books, that I love, but I think they are a little more in-depth and scientific than she will be willing to read to start with. Also any information on being low-carb without a gall bladder would be appreciated too. Thanks so much!

You mention Phinney and Volek so I'll go with the idea that keto is of interest as well as general low carb?

"The Ketogenic Bible" by Dr. (PhD) Jacob Wilson and Ryan Lowery discusses the same basic principles as Phinney & Volek without all the science. The book is fairly new. I think it was released sometime in 2017. I picked up a copy at the library and read through it in a couple of days. 1/3 of it is recipes complete with color pictures. I liked the format of the book and found nothing out of line/out of the ordinary in the book (that I recall) compared to other keto writings.

The "Big Fat Surprise" is a book your mom might find interesting. It is not a "how to diet book" but rather sheds light on how the whole fear of fat came about. Your mom is just a few years older than me so we may share similar perspectives and recollections of the last 50-60 years of the food industry beginning in the Eisenhower era. I'll bet she remembers the jingle, "Everything's better with Blue Bonnet on it" (oleo margerine). :)

Hope all goes well with her surgery tomorrow if she has it. Not sure how open she or her medical team will be to fat after gall bladder surgery but we all know things can be tweaked and low carb isn't always high fat.

We also have a Launch Pad that includes a long list of books, videos and more right here: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10348421/recommended-videos-movies-podcasts-and-clips#latest

These are all recommended by members of this forum over the years.
Your mom might find the Jimmy Moore books easier to follow if she's in recovery: Cholesterol Clarity/ Keto Clarity / Complete Guide to Fasting, with Jason Fung.
    hth!

I would look through the launch pad too. Great stuff in there. Moore's Keto Clarity and Fung's Obesity Code where going to be my recommendations too. Moore has an interesting podcast and Fung's IDM website is interesting too.

I think Dr Halberg's Ted talk is a really good introduction for a short video.

The Perfect Human Diet was a good show too.

Wheat Belly is a good intro to cutting grains and sugar.

Best wishes to you mom. I hope her recovery goes well.

Dr. Jason Fung's quick blogposts are an interesting read, not too long, some charts that explain things too. His site: https://idmprogram.com/blog/
Lots of interesting stuff on hyperinsulinemia and cancer too.

edited 'cause I can't spell hyperinsulinemia this morning :/
