November falls...

The eleventh month has arrived! For those of us who live in areas where the irrational folly of "daylight savings time" is about to kick in...

My understanding is the concept of DST was for the benefit of farmers and resource workers who are on the job when the sun arises. That neatly explains why Saskatchewan... the province that is Canada's breadbasket... doesn't bother with DST.

This is also the beginning of the holiday celebrations... Thanksgiving (for the US), Christmas and New Years... and all of those opportunities to over-indulge.

Stay the course, people!! We'll get there!!

  • Fall...my most favorite time of year! Also maybe the most challenging as far as staying on track. Working to keep my focus in the forefront while still enjoying the good stuff that comes this time of year :)

Fall- my 3rd favorite season. :D

I am shifting my outdoor focus from cycling to running, although my cycling buddies will ride any weekend day that has decent weather. Hoping to get my trainer set up soon for indoor cycling.

Or Florida with two seasons: dry and wet.
We will soon be in the dry season.
We used to have cool winters with a day or two in the low forties that would kill off the exotic pets gone wild. Now we have iguanas living in trees like other places have squirrels.

I'm uncertain what my geographic state does, but my personal state has only two seasons: Rowing season, and not-rowing season.

We're heading into not-rowing season ( :( ), which means it's time for my annual denial; followed by cocooning; followed by slow and reluctant slide into sporadically doing things that are Good for Me, but that I don't really enjoy, chiefly weight training and swimming. Interspersed with more denial and cocooning, of course.

    Sigh.

DST actually began during WWI in an effort to save on fuel for the war effort. And we have been stuck with it ever since. When we were kids we were told it was so kids would not have to wait in the dark for school buses. Apparently, most people never knew why it ever started. I hate it. If I wanted it to feel like midnight at 5 in the afternoon I would move to Alaska.

It's not too hot and not too cold here in Texas. My last day of work was November 1. This is not how I planned to retire, but I kicked my retirement plan into gear anyway.

I hope you have an easier transition than you thought and that you find that you love being retired.

I put my bike away this week for the winter. Sad day. Cold 30 mile ride to my Dad's place where it sleeps in the garage with a lot of other good weather vehicles. Fast edge of traction ride down on a dry, cold day. Fun fun fun.

Luckily, my garage has space for my Harley so I can break it out if there's good weather... but we haven't had much of that lately.

Just had my snow tires put on, live in NH. there was a 6 hour wait. All because we had a little snow the day before. Everyone panicked, had to come back the next day, a two hour wait. Oh well they are on now. No snow yet. Don't care to much for it getting dark around 4. I do not drive at night, so I need to be home by 4.
I am new in a way, have been away for awhile, but need to get back on track.

So it’s 01:00 in the morning, and instead of being tucked in bed this is me in the white shirt driving a brand new state of the art truck that isn’t ours 30 miles from it’s department through the fog and down a narrow single lane dirt road to a cottage fire. Still living the dream.

Can I ask you about rowing? I signed up for a class starting Jan 1...our rowing season is Feb to June I think. The January class is all machines, then if you are not dead yet you can sign up for a novice season. I'm excited...pretty sure I'm strong (I am a powerlifter). Not excited about getting up at 3:30 but it's only 3 days a week. I can do this.

Um, sure, you can ask me about rowing . . . but you didn't exactly ask anything ;) ?

I've been a rower for 15 years, got USRowing coaching certification, went to multiple camps that had elite coaches, etc.

Yes, leg strength particularly, and strength generally, will help you, along with the general body awareness I'd assume you have. (It's a rather technical sport.) Machines then water is a good progression - what we do with new folks on my breast cancer survivors team.

It needs (or will develop ;) ) good CV fitness, too. Competitively, it's a short endurance sport. You can race not only boats, but also machines.

If you're interested in competition, seek out novice events in your novice year: You'll never be a novice ever again.

    You'll do great. :)

If you have further specific questions, feel free to PM me, or start a rowing thread in this group and tag me in.
