Typical stress eating this time of year. Cookies get baked this weekend, then back to regular eating.

Had some back pain a couple days ago-it even kept me up at night. Tried my yoga instructor‘a advice and lay down on top of a yoga block for a few minutes and I feel soo much better! My knee still has good days and bad days but I had two consecutive good days this week so that’s an improvement. My PT will release me at the end of the month so I’m looking for a fitness center that will be a good fit for me so I can continue with my progress. I now know that I need to avoid certain moves to guard my knee, so no zoomba or jumping. I checked a physical trainer today. It’s expensive but I should be able to manage it til our next vacation. There’s another place I want to check out, along with a couple traditional gyms. Any advice on how to decide if a gym is a good match?

I am trying to maintain through the holidays, I want to enjoy a little. I am off 5 days work 2, then off 5 days. I plan on some serious workouts so I can enjoy. Weighed in today at 165. BUT, 2020 I have to get serious, goal 145. @Beka3695 I ate over 500 calories in chocolate covered toffee at work, WTH, but next day did not touch it.

@machchic after my shortbread cookie fiasco... I went in the next day and put a sticky note on them saying “hide these from me”. My sweet co-worker did so. No more shortbread for me!!!!

It depends on your goals... This time round I’ve decided to give the gym/fitness centre the skip and choose exercise that I feel is sustainable (easy for me to do in my everyday life). So I alternate between jogging and yoga; I listen to running podcasts to motivate and improve my running, and I use “Yoga with Adriene” YouTube videos at home for my yoga. Free and easy.

In the past I have been a member of various fitness centre style gyms. I have never really liked them, and feel they often have unethical business practices (they often make it unnecessarily difficult to quit your membership). Best fit for a while was one when my daughter was young which had a creche - meant I wanted to go to the gym simply because it gave me an hour break from being a mum! But the owner was rude and they made changes to the class schedule which meant that I couldn’t make it to classes on time (clashed with dropping my kid off at school), and I knew if I wanted to do yoga I was better off doing it with a dedicated yoga studio than a fitness centre (and for a while I was a regular at a yoga centre, until I moved house).

My pattern with the gym has always been the same in the past: join when highly motivated and wanting to lose weight and tone up; be really good at hitting the gym several times a week for a while, then for one reason or another attendance tapers off (get sick or an injury or holiday away or conflicting schedule or really busy ) and really loathe going, and find myself paying for months and months for a service I’m not using.

It’s too soon to say whether my new approach is working (home based exercise instead of the gym) but my goal is to create a regular exercise habit where I exercise at least 30 mins every morning like clockwork so it’s so well integrated into my life that I don’t need to feel “motivated” to do it.

That’s not to say I won’t ever do fitness classes anywhere again. What I have found most beneficial in the past is to go to specialised places when I have an interest or a need. A dedicated yoga centre does yoga better than a gym does - it is a completely different experience because it is not just about “exercise” but really holistic (mind, body, spirit). For a while when I was having some back, neck and shoulder pain due to spinal alignment issues I did a multi-session course of Feldenkrais, which I would highly recommend. At one point I started to learn a martial art, which I want to do again properly (but the type of martial art I want to learn is not currently available near me - I moved away from the dojo I used to attend).

Of course it is different for everyone: some people like going to the gym, and people have different fitness goals and needs (and that gym crèche was a lifesaver when my daughter was young!).

Same story with me. Whenever I take a Gym membership I just can't be regular and then somehow I start to skip sessions gradually stop going..Things got better only when I started to go to my community's gym which is free for all community members. Even now I am not as regular but I don't feel like it's compelling as am not losing my money. Though this Gym has only minimum equipments but has sufficient weight plates and a bar rack so I can continue lifting without hassle.

    Week 4, Monday
    PW: 151 lbs
    CW: 149 lbs

This week ahead is the challenge. I fully expect my weight to increase by next weigh in, not just because of xmas food temptations, but stress of christmas with extended family (dysfunction dynamics, different eating, sleeping and exercising, habits, lots of tensions and arguments). Stirs a lot up.

Merry Christmas!!! I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday! I probably won't be on much over the next few days so I will be taking a break. I definitely want to start again on Jan1. This year was definitely not what I wanted weight wise. Let's hope next year is better!

    Indulge, enjoy, and have fun!!!
