If you wait until the end of the day to track your calories, you are fooling yourself and missing out on critical feedback. When you use the MFP app to record your calories as you consume them, you will be much more thoughtful about what you put into your body. In addition, if you choose to go a little heavy at breakfast or lunch, you will have that information in time to make adjustments for later in the day. For example: If you discover that you only have 350 calories left for your evening meal, you can make good choices to both eat lightly and/or do some evening exercise.
Whether or not you choose to 'eat back' some or all of the exercise calories that you 'earn' is up to you. The UAC has no rules about how you choose to spend or use your exercise calories.
In fact, our teammates vary considerably in how they treat their exercise calories.
If you have been with the UAC for awhile, please share your own personal choices in how you treat exercise calories.
Personally, I am encouraged to do more exercise when I know that it gives me an increase above my base caloric limit of 2000 calories per day.

I 'eat back' my exercise calories. I still try to go under but I know I do better when I am able to have a small treat like a couple of squares of dark chocolate, or an extra banana! It also helps me keep up the cardio because I like to eat. I do exercise for the fitness and overall well being.10 -

I ate something yesterday and now I am not feeling well. I did a few stretches though.
As far as my own personal choices in how I treat exercise calories I push myself to eat well but I feel like I not always successful. I have not gone over my calories and I think that is because when I know that when I ate a high calorie meal, I try to eat something healthier or less calories for the next meal and I try not to snack in between. If I do snack then I eat fruit or yogurt. My exercise routine is just in the morning and consist of stretches of cardio.10 -
It was fun reading about everyone's location in yesterday's posts. I was late to the game due to some unforeseen challenge (neighbor's water heater burst and leaked in to my unit)....no damage - thank goodness. Hope everyone has/had a great day. Will be posting my status later tonight.....lunchtime here.9

When I was still shedding weight, exercise calories were "fair game" for being able to declare "stayed within calorie limits" so long as I had at least 1 left at the end of the day, but as a general rule / routine I would aim to leave SOME of them behind. I didn't generally earn that big a cushion anyway (maybe 100 - 120 ish range)
Now that I am in maintenance, I tend to try to eat back whatever will bring me pretty well right in balance with what my fitbit says I burned. Sometimes this means less than what MFP would say is "still in the green" and sometimes more.9 -
@SuziQ113 I was SOOO glad to hear that the storm potential in your area never got as bad as it could have .... and quite the story about your "plenty of exercise from NON-storm flooding!"
I am sure it was not a amusing while in the middle of it ... but you can be sure to have had a huge calorie deficit out of it.3 -

Exactly what I do, Rick, including the 2K calorie limit. When scale creeps up, I use fewer of exercise calories OR do more exercise or both.6 -
Also, tracking before eating a meal or RIGHT after (unless it’s dinner) has made me realize how much more accurate our tracking will be. Easy to forget those 9 almonds 8 hours later... 🤣5

When I am on track & dieting i do not eat back exercise calories. I hope one day to get to maintaining a healthy weight & I believe then that I could est back exercise calories8 -

Yes x 3. Felt a little yuck yesterday and a lot yuck after I got to work this morning. Got most of my exercise in before I went down. Headachy and sore throat, chills, runny nose. Then I was on my way to get a patient and felt discomfort on inhale. Called employee heAlthough, took myself out of the transport rotation and awaited further instructions. Told to clock out and get a covid test. It was rapid and got the results in 90 minutes. Negative, thankfully. Helped the husband finish taking things that can fly around in high winds. Then I went in and took a nap. Logged everything and still came under.10

I limit calories to 1600 because I know if I restrict further, I will not succeed. Since I am trying to lose weight, I don't eat back my exercise calories.5 -

As for eating back exercise calories, sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. It depends on how hungry I am and how determined I am to lose weight for the week.
I also record my food either as I eat it or towards the beginning of the day if I know what my dinner is going to be.8 -

I am yes x's 3 today. The first time walk early this morning went well. (except I stupidly didn't wear socks...so big blister will need to be nursed for a day. Monday...you are done!6 -

I try not to eat back, since I’m trying to loose weight. I plan my meals in the morning and the kitchen closes at 7:00 pm. However, I don’t beat myself up if I deviant from the plan.
