And I finally have a triple yes day. Morning run was slow but good. I didn’t want to overdo it after my dehydration but it’s good to get out and prove to myself that I’m all better. Did some reading and then watched series. I have a long shift coming up at work starting Monday and it looks like it’s going to be a busy stranded season. First rough sea when there aren’t that many puppies born yet and we already have 32 cutie pies that need to get back to their moms by next weekend Tuesday. The worst is usually around Christmas, if there is bad weather during that spring tide. Anyway, I’m taking it easy while I can!
Ate well, all logged and under budget. Being lazy keeps from at home where there is only healthy food and saves me from spending money on junk, so it does have its perks.
Here are the first 12 of the seal pups who arrived yesterday. Another 20 came in today.
Glad you seem to be improving as the days go on. The seals are so cute! Are they friendly or demons like the penquins?

@Dory_42 Love the photo of the baby seals. I'm also curious how you get them back to their mothers.
@Pearl0408 I'm so sorry about your friend and the hospital restrictions. Can you arrange for a phone call? It's not the same as an in-person visit, but still is contact. Best wishes to you.4 -

Info on my cute baby seals. These little ones are literally born in a big pile of rocks, is not even considered an island. They aren’t normally born between mid November and mid January so they are anything from a few days old to two weeks old at this stage. As they get bigger they get better at returning to the rocks when they get washed off. The pups all hang out together while the mothers are catching fish at sea (or mating as this is one of two periods in the year when they stay on the rocks). When mom comes back to feed she finds her pup by calling and recognising pup’s response. It is the cutest thing to hear them all calling. We have about 7 days to get them back to the rocks before mom stops looking for them. During this time we tube them some liquid and vitamins to combat the stress of being in captivity. Then we put tags on their flippers, pack them in crates and take them on a boat to the rocks where we put them on a section of the rocks. We have seen tagged babies suckling in the past.
Apart from tubing and tagging and any medical treatment they need (normally just cleaning cuts and scrapes) we keep hands off as this species comes in contact with humans and if they are habituated to us we can’t release them. So they tend to bite if we get too close. They are normally under 5kg so small enough to easily restrain when you know what you are doing.
On rare occasions we have to hand raise one of them (our second youngest resident, 2 year old, was hand raised because we couldn’t get her back to the rocks in time) and they very quickly identify you as mom so come and cuddle. They try to find somewhere to suckle on you and occasionally nip when it doesn’t work but it’s really not that bad. They are the softest most cuddlely thing ever at this age.
If they are too badly injured we have to get the vet in to euthenase which is never fun but at least they don’t suffer.
The most we ever had was about 200 if I remember properly. That was the spring tide right after Christmas. This many so early in the season is a bad sign. Although it means there are lots of pups so the colony is doing well.6
