@Jugar and everyone Thank you for your kind words. I have heard no update on my cousin. Peaceful and comfortable is my prayer as well.
Your hike sounds amazing.
I love the visual image of dancing with fear. I don’t have a lot of issues with fear, but I will hold on to that. I guess my biggest fears come with hoping for happy, smooth lives for my kids. I totally get needing that adrenaline before a “performance “ and how that helps. I think I embraced that as a good thing too. Whenever my colleagues and I would have to do a presentation in front of parents, they would get so nervous and want to script everything out. That is not my style. After working together for a while, I was able to convince them they had nothing to worry about. They were competent, knowledgeable teachers and could easily talk about our program. I like to think I helped them with that. One nice thing that comes with age and experience is knowing, you really don’t have much to be afraid of.
@ashleycarole86 Hope you have a perfect day for golf.
@KellyBgetsfit i know it’s hard when your habit gets disrupted. But getting those workout clothes on is a start. Right now, my mat is open on the floor and I haven’t been on it yet. I don’t have all the things you have getting in the way. I know first thing is best for me. But now I’m going to have it staring at me. Sometimes all you have to do is force yourself to start. Can your older daughter or son occupy the baby for 10-15 minutes? Good luck. We’re cheering you on. 👏🏼👍🏻3 -
@AshenMoon you're the second person in the last day or two I've seen mention a VR workout.. sounds like a lot of fun!
@micki48 sending good thoughts to your family with the recent news of your cousin
The fear bubble discussion was quite timely for me and it's a good topic for me to reflect on. As a kid I had a lot of anxiety, and while overall I think I've come a long way in dealing with it, I still struggle with it more than I'd like. The comment about not feeling the fear until you're in the moment really resonated with me. I spend a lot of time anticipating a situation, building it up in my head, making it scarier than it is, and often (almost always, in fact), the situation comes and goes and is nothing like what I pictured. But, in the meantime, I've felt even worse fear just anticipating it than the actual situation would have caused had it unfolded in the worst way I was worrying about. There is a difference between a small amount of healthy stress or motivation to do well, and just irrationally spinning in my mind. These types of thought patterns have often driven me to food or other self-sabotaging behavior in the past, so as I work on changing myself, work in these areas has to remain front and center.
Golf was good... caught up with an old colleague who switched companies about two years and he noticed my weight loss, so that felt great. Tonight Brad and I had plans for a bike ride, and I was amazed at how strong I felt. Half the time when we bike I feel totally gassed, but I had so much energy tonight, which is a bit ironic considering I'd already golfed 18 holes. Nice to enjoy the feeling while it was there lol
@jugar sounds like you found yourself quite an adventure on that hike! Between that and @conleywoods cougars, there's a lot of adventure going on outdoors this week

Fun side question for all -
Have you ever participated in a formal race of any kind, and if so, which was your most memorable?4 -
@micki48 sorry to hear about your cousin.
@KellyBgetsfit I have been feeling not super motivated with my workouts, too. I plan to do yoga first thing and sometimes, if it happens, it's the literal last thing I do before dinner. I find recently I am also quick to take a workout off the to-do list if time starts to crunch. But my girl Adriene from Yoga With Adriene has a great little mantra - "give yourself grace." It can mean something different for everyone, but I think of it as acknowledging that I need space and rest that day, and to give myself some understanding. Trying to schedule anything around a BABY is a herculean effort. The funk won't last forever.
@ashleycarole86 aye, aye, Captain! I ran XC in middle and high school, so plenty of 5Ks back in the day. But in 2018, 2 friends from HS and I decided to try a "Hard Cider Run" in the middle of nowhere, Pennsylvania. It was, frankly, hysterical. We had all been okay runners in HS and had all not run a step since if we could avoid it. Expecting this race to be chill (and end with a drink in hand!), we were astonished to round the first turn of the 5K and be faced with what I can only describe as my Everest. This hill was so steep, I swear I used my hands. We had optimistically put ourselves in the 10 min/mile group. HA. We waltzed over the finish line at a speedy 51 minutes.... for 3.1 miles.
Gave ourselves more than one drink after that one.
I am still struggling with how much food my extended family likes to make and eat. Does every day HAVE to include a happy hour of sorts? These guys are killing me. But looking forward to my bike ride tomorrow.6 -

@ashleycarole86 I do the same with ruminating, and building things up in my head. It made for a miserable couple of weeks before my first vaccine! That is something I'm trying to work on.
In terms of races... I've done a couple but I guess Tough Mudder stands out. Man that sucked. I skipped plenty of obstacles (by the end, when you had to run through the electric shock wires, my thought process was simply 'screw that' lol) and I couldn't do a lot of the running as it was up and down a ridiculously steep hillside. I do have my first park run this weekend, so looking forward to that, and then in November we're doing a 10k at a big theme park (Alton Towers), where you do the run in the morning then spend the afternoon on the rides and the park is closed to the general public. I suspect it'll be busy as normal though because they're still selling tickets including spectator tickets.
My arm was killing me yesterday, but thankfully its mostly just stiff today and OK unless I try to move it outside of a typical range. Our TV streaming service lost signal last night so I took the opportunity to go to bed early and slept through. I almost never wake up feeling refreshed, but I felt pretty good this morning - oh for that feeling every day. I'm probably going to hold off foam rolling today (one exercise includes my arms/shoulders) but it may be cool enough for an evening walk with any luck, and I'll do my stretches.
I have the dental hygienist later which is great except my jaw is still aggravated from last week's filling, so I think it's going to be a very uncomfortable session - I keep getting shooting pain when I move my jaw in certain ways without thinking, and I know it'll lock at the dentist later, but once I've been, I can properly focus on easing it off. I'm not taking any painkillers because I want my body to do it's thing against the Covid vaccine. It's no wonder I'm not the biggest alcohol fan, when a drunken face plant is still causing me issues over 5 years later!3 -

Hello group!
I made it through all the celebrations and we finally finished the cupcakes from the bakery. Thank goodness they cost a fortune and we don't buy them very often. I've been over calories 3 days in a row, one day by a lot. I'm trying to get back on track and still think my weigh in will be fine.
My husband gets really hungry in the evenings when I am usually out of calories. It is really hard to work around sometimes. He is pretty fit and he is really active so he definitely needs more calories than me. I don't mind making him snacks but he feels bad if I do and don't eat. Sometimes I give in and eat snacks. I try and leave calories for the end of the day but it doesn't always work. I need to figure this out because it's really holding up my progress.3 -
Hello all!
Just a quick update - I'm in the big city (Montreal) today and tomorrow, and today is certainly shaping up to have some epic calorie consumption I had lunch cooked by a genuine Italian Mama (eggplant parmagiana, salad, and homemade biscotti) and soon I'm meeting two other friends at a fancy Neapolitan pizza joint. Yikes! I did not pick that one, but heck - I'm going to enjoy getting too stuffed, and walk a lot to get back to where I'm staying. Tomorrow will be a long day of sitting also, but then it will be done with. It is fun to be in the city after all this time - and luckily it's a gorgeous day.
Friday people? You ready?

Interesting comments by a few of you on the complications family and friends can put on our plan in a whole bunch of different ways. Prior to starting in January, I'd never done anything remotely diet-like in front of Brad. I honestly suspected it was going to be a rough adjustment as our whole relationship had been centered around our mutual love of food. He does almost all the cooking, and loved to dote on me that way. I thought he'd sabotage more or not understand my new habits.
Even though it took him a bit longer to hop on board for himself (his own decision once he got there), he did respect the choices I had to make right from day one and didn't pressure me to eat or indulge in ways I wasn't prepared to. I know this isn't always the common experience... going through it together means I have a built in cheerleader right at home. Given our similar weight, it at times feels like we are walking the same journey. I will appreciate the benefit this gives me.
It's amazing how much what we each put in our mouth can be perceived as a threat, disappointment, etc. to others. I've always been a people pleaser, so if I was around my mom for example and she was suggesting one night of celebration wouldn't hurt, I'd indulge.. but of course it was never just one night. And I wasn't making the choice for me, I was making it for someone else.
There is a fine line to honoring ourselves, having fun with family and friends, meeting our goals... this journey feels full of pitfalls to overcome depending on the situation/person and how impactful that influence is on our day to day.
Atomic Habits speaks to the role of family and friends in shaping our habits. Just being part of this group of like minded people with similar goals suggests better likelihood we'll meet our goals, and maintain those habits well after we reach that goal zone line (whatever that means for all of us.) I know the participation here reinforces my identity of achieving my health goals.
Enjoy your big city romp @jugar .. sounds like a blast!4 -

Check in for the day. Calories are on track today and much less sugar now that the cupcakes are gone. One thing I have been experimenting with this week is not drinking bubly (fruit flavored sparkling water zero calories). I read an article that it can have a similar impact on the brain as diet soda and causes you to produce more ghrelin (hunger hormone). I also am doing no alcohol which is usually my normal but had it almost daily on vacation. I definitely notice the hormone impact of alcohol and have more pms symptoms when I drink. I have had a much better time with cravings since stopping these two beverages. Well see if it's a long term help or not. Sticking with regular water, coffee and kombucha for now.
I also am trying to lighten up on the exercise too. It can be easy to get 2+ hours of activity running around with the kids and dogs. It's a little smokey so I thought this would be a good time to experiment. I think I get really hungry when I work out a lot and I over consume because I exercised. Today I did 25 minutes of pilates and later did a 15 minute walk. Really hoping to get the scale consistently moving down.
I have a friend who has been working on loosing weight for a while now. She has lost a lot more weight than I have and looks really good. The big difference between our approach is she focuses on calorie budget mostly and gets a workout in a few times a month. I feel like I am consistently working out but not as consistently balancing my calorie budget. Definitely got my wheels turning and I felt very inspired by her progress.7 -
@ashleycarole86 interesting question about races. I've completed in 2 that come to mind:
1) When I was young my parents had a cottage and each year there was a mini-olympics. I always competed in the long distance swim. I never even came close, but I always finished. Oddly, I can swim forever but I have always had issues kicking my legs, which meant I was very slow - may have been related to my hip?
2) In my early 20's I competed in the CN Tower stair climb twice. I made it to the top both times and thought my times were quite good, but I was many minutes behind 1st place.
In both things I remember having tons of fun, which was way more important than where I finished.6 -

Happy Friday everyone.
This has felt like a loooong week. Our free weekend is now truly free, and whilst there's a fair amount we need/want to get done, it's going to be nice to only plan around ourselves. Oh, except the Saturday park run, of course! If I wasn't doing that I'd probably be chilling out in bed and it is important for my body that I keep running so I don't mind that one.
OH has various appointments relating to joining the police over the next couple of weeks. It's very much got my mind in the zone of how we'll cope with the lifestyle changes. Honestly, my personality is not really compatible with flexibility (I would call it instability - and stability is one of my values) so this is going to be very challenging. I'm focusing on the practicalities (i.e. things I can control) which could make life easier.
I think a big thing will be doing more batch cooking; I tend to do some over winter (stews etc) but we struggle for freezer space. I'm not sure I can fit both a dishwasher and an undercounter freezer in the kitchen, so either I need to find space, or prioritise. I like having freezer meals because reheating is easy, and it's quicker than getting a takeaway/less effort than going out for fast food. This will be very important for my continued weight loss.
Other things I've got on my list are hiring a cleaner once a week/fortnight, changing the smoke alarms to smart ones I can stop with my phone (I can't reach the ceilings!) and I probably need to do something about my fear of spiders! Autumn is particularly awful, because they make their own way inside, but Kirk also has a habit of bringing big ones in through the cat flap.4 -

Way to go!!!! Great week1 -
Yesterday, I did 20 min of Barre. Today, I lifted and did the elliptical. My calories were over yesterday. Today, I will be about 100 under, if I stick to my meal plan.
I ran a 5k...once. it was a glow run and fun. I have just never been a runner. I used to think it would be fun to so tough mudder or something similar, but that desire has passed!
@conleywoods I lost the most weight in April/May when I only worked for 10-20 min a day. It was definitely easier to keep my calories low, but I prefer to workout. It makes me feel so much better when I workout.3 -

Way to go!!!! Great week
I second that!! Awesome progress, Kristi.
Thank you friends for your thoughts about my cousin. He is still with us. Did not have a heart attack as they first thought. May have been asthma attack. He is still on machines but is taking some breaths and has some reaction. We are concerned with how long he went without oxygen. Waiting to hear from his sons about what’s next.
@ashleycarole86 I have never been in a race, but walked a 5k for March of Dimes. I’m a pretty fast walker. We have a really cool race here in my town. It’s called Running of the Balls. It’s run at night through this neighborhood that puts up thousands of light balls in their trees throughout the neighborhood. It is so cool and otherworldly. They raise money for childhood hunger so if there ever was a great race—that’s it. Maybe someday. They also have bands, fires, food. Cool T-shirt’s too.
My BFF is a personal trainer and nurse (unfortunately we don’t live near each other or I know she’d whip me into shape), she told me as much as exercise is great for you in so many ways, you will never exercise your weight off. Can’t be done. It has to be through diet. So further proof that focusing on eating healthy calories and staying under goal works.
@jugar Hope you’re having a great time in the big city and learned a lot.
@conleywoods Believe it or not, our air is smokey from the fires all the way here in North Carolina. So amazing.
Did 11 minutes of Pilates this am. Ran to a few stores today. My granddaughter is having a sleepover here tonight. Her parents are celebrating their 5th anniversary.

I'm back from Alaska and the trip was incredible! The wildlife and scenery were amazing and we were able to enjoy them by train, boat, helicopter, float plane, kayak, dog sled, and hiking. It was so nice to be able to travel again and we couldn't have picked a better place to go.
The plane ride started with a loose seat belt, at 285 I had been close to needing the extension to be able to buckle it. I only gained 5 pounds over the 15 day trip and I was able to lose that plus an additional .5 over the last few days. I'm feeling re-energized and ready to get back to losing!
This is where we went dog sledding on a glacier.
This is Brooks Falls at Katmai National Park. At one point there were nine grizzly in the river and falls eating the spawning salmon.
This is where we kayaked. The chunks of ice don't look large in the pic but when we were down there many were larger than a house.
Have a great weekend and I'll work on catching up on all of the posts I missed!6 -
@gak71 oh my goodness.. those pics are AMAZING!!!! Glad you had such a good time.. looks phenomenal.
The seat belt thing is a huge win. The last time I flew I almost couldn't buckle up either, will look forward to that no longer being the case.
Welcome back and congrats on the loss. Well done5 -
Lots of wow in all the recent posts! Gorgeous Alaska photos, some excellent weight drops, and plenty of interesting thoughts.
I survived my all day gun safety course today - it was intense! Two old guys (ok, they were probably younger than I am...) who both have a ton of experience took turns teaching, and I think I did well on the testing at the end of the day. There was a LOT to remember, but it sure did the job of pounding the messages home about safe handling, storage, transportation, use, and general knowledge about the different types of unrestricted firearms (hunting rifles and shotguns). The practical exam made me really nervous because we did not really get to try or have any up close demonstrations before the exam because of covid rules. Luckily I could watch some of the other people before it was my turn, and I managed to keep my head on straight. All this just so I'll be able to own one - then my DH will be able to get rid of groundhogs for me! I won't have the actual permit to own and acquire for another few months, so I guess the little blighters are safe for now. Where are the coyotes when you need them?
It was also, as predicted, a fairly wild couple of days of eating, but not quite as bad as I had feared. I was so full from lunch yesterday that I did not have pizza for dinner, but had a wonderful arugula salad. It was great to see my friends that I had not seen in so long. We told a lot of stories and had plenty of laughs.
So, folks! We arrive at the end of yet another week already. Last weigh ins for the week:

@KellyBgetsfit I am with you on the loving exercise and it will definitely still be part of my week. I will just be scaling back and feeling okay about that choice.
@gak71 OMG! What an amazing trip you had and all that activity. Congratulations on keeping the pounds under control and what a great birthday gift.
@jugar I am in the middle of doing hunters education with my 10 year old. All of the in person classes are canceled so I have to do all the instruction for him myself through an online program. It is a lot of information so I know what you just went through! Glad you did well. We are a week or so away from our final exam. My husband and father in law will do a field day for him to demonstrate his safety skills.5 -
