I'm jealous too. Both of the HM and the retirement. And, I have to admit, I *am* counting down. Hahahahaha!

@biketheworld Congrats on your upcoming retirement. How exciting!
I am also signed up for a half marathon via vacation races. I am a walker so I am always at the back of the pack.
I did the Everglades years ago through them and really enjoyed it. I have been out of shape since taking care of my mom for the past couple of years and this is my 'kedge' to pull me along into getting back in shape. I am signed up for the Saguaro Half in Feb 2022. I have to admit that I was getting pretty excited looking at the pictures posted by @seilidhe
I am not that familiar with that area of the country and it looks so beautiful!!!
If you're doing the Saguaro Half at Old Tucson, which is what came up when I googled it, I hope you're planning to stay a couple of days to check out the area. February is a nice time of year. There are two sections of Saguaro National Park, one west of town and one southeast of town. I go to the latter. There is an 8 mile paved loop with the hill from hell starting at mile 4. I did the loop once. I'm not ready to try again. I usually take the easier route out to the picnic grounds. It is on the complete other side of the city from Old Tucson. So is Sabino Canyon, but that's up towards the Northeast side of town. And, if you want to see trees and potentially snow, a 45 minute to an hour drive up to Mt. Lemmon will satisfy that craving. If they're planning to do races at Old Tucson in February, that kind of explains some of the work being done out there right now. The County purchased the property about a year ago maybe? And work has just recently started. The Run with the Roosters race out there over the 4th of July was a hit.4 -
Thank you everybody for the birthday wishes. It was an okay day. Today, however, sucked, so yesterday was fabulous by comparison.4

@seilidhe OMGosh!!!! You are I are too much alike!!! I actually started my countdown on my phone when I was about 1500-1600 days away!! It wasn't something that I thought about much, but I liked watching it go down by 100 every few months! Lol. It's only been since it went under 1000 that I've started to get really excited! Lol.
Although I have to say that since I wont' be eligible for SS yet, I plan to get a part time job here in the town I live in. Right now I drive 45 mins each way. OR, I would LOVE to build up my massage business so that I could do it more full time-ish.3 -

@Mrs_Hoffer @seilidhe I also had countdowns prior to my retirement ... probably started 4-5 years ago. I didn't even hate my job. I was just tired of working after 45+ years. I love not working though I advise you to make sure you have plans for how you'll spend your time. I have many hobbies and take courses but my still working partner has no hobbies and watches way to much TV so I've been encouraging him to develop some time consuming hobbies. Otherwise he's apt to make me his hobby and that won't fly.

@Mrs_Hoffer and @LazyBlondeChef - one of my buddies at work has about 100 days. She's not counting time she's taking to use her vacation time, otherwise she'd have a bit more to go. She uses notebook paper on the wall of her cubicle to announce to the world how much time she has left. I check my phone counter every couple of weeks.
I'll be 67.5 when I retire, well, almost 67.5. I am hoping to be able to get by on State retirement and a part-time job and not claim my SS until I'm 70 since there's a pretty hefty jump in benefit by waiting that 2.5 years. I'm hoping to also get into some classes, photography, language, drawing... And also be able to increase my exercise time. If I could travel, that would be a dream.

Oh boy that is exactly my case. Hubby has zero hobbies, unless you count TV. Well, he does do all the cooking which he enjoys. I made it clear to him a long time ago that my idea of retirement is not lounging around. This is a chance to do all the things I haven’t had time for. He’s ok with me gone all day on my bike, or traveling solo, or disappearing into my sewing room all day. He just wants to know that he’s still my #1 priority and fan. Which of course he is and I purposefully make sure he knows that every day. He is a treasure and even though we are opposite ends of the spectrum on physical activity, I wouldn’t trade him for the world.5 -
@biketheworld and @seilidhe My hubby was kinda forced into retirement this year as he spent almost all of last year "not feeling well" and they didn't find out until Dec that he has lymphoma.
Walmart had laid him off last summer (he was a senior pharmacist and they had "cutbacks") and he spent last summer/fall trying to find another pharmacist job. He had wanted to put off getting his SS until age 70, but the lymphoma diagnosis changed his mind about that. He hasn't started chemo yet because he's asymptomatic now, and the ins Co won't pay for the chemo since he doesn't have any symptoms. Crazy! I've spent the last 16 mos wfh and had glimpse of what retirement might look like for us! Lol. We're both busy and watch very little TV. (Of course football season is beginning soon tho!)
He does keep busy with his hobbies, with working out at his hunting property, and with repairs and stuff around the house. He loves to hunt 🦌 and beginning here in another month I'll be a hunting widow for awhile as he'll spend LOTS of time out at his hunting property. 😉 😊😃
Myself, I'll only just be 62 when I retire from my (fulltime) bank job... so I'll definitely get some kind of part time job.4 -
