G - Gourds - The Cucurbitaceae, also called cucurbits or the gourd family, are a plant family consisting of about 965 species in around 95 genera. Those most important to humans are the following: Cucurbita – squash, pumpkin, zucchini or courgette, some gourds. (Google) We raised ornimental gourds that we dried and made into useful things. the small egg shaped ones were especially good to use when my Mom needed something to put in the toe of a sock when she was darning a hole. The bigger ones can be made into bird houses, planters, dippers, etc. It was also interesting to see that a guard is considered a fruit. I had thought they were a vegetable.

I love your gourd stories, Linda. I also thought they were vegetables. We have small ones here out west called Paddy Melons. They are round. One year my mother threaded some on string, hung them on a fence and spray painted them in Christmas colours for our tree.

N - Nance fruits are commonly known as hog berries. They have a similar physical appearance to those of cherries in terms of size and shape, however, they have a richer golden orange color. You can also find a red flesh type of nance fruit in Mexico and Costa Rica. Some people like eating them raw while some prefer cooked nance fruit.

    O - Orangelo
These are the offspring of oranges and grapefruit. They look exactly like grapefruits. Orangelos are not too large but have pinkish-red and orange skin flesh, inside. A lot of people cut them into halves and eat them out of the flesh, via spoons. Orangelos are very sweet as compared to grapefruit and they are super easy to peel. (Google)

    Q - Querina apples

Similar to Golden Delicious and Jonathan apples, Florina, or Querina apples are sweet, firm, and bold red in color. They have purplish-red streaks on the outside of the apple which makes them distinctive in appearance compared to similar apples. The Florina apple was developed in France but has roots in North America.

R - Red Currants wq5yaek23qhw.png These shiny little berries grow low on bushes, hanging from the branches like rows of miniature gems. Their flavour is a little tart but they're still sweet enough to be eaten raw, so long as they're sprinkled with plenty of sugar. (Google)
