Sounds interesting as I never heard of Cactus Bites before!0 -
The cactus has the spines removed, it is cut in small strips, battered and deep fried. It has a mild taste (like a cross between green beans and okra) but mostly just tastes of the spicy batter. Some places they are called "Nopales Fries". Here is another appetizer that steak houses offer.
F - Fried Blooming Onion (this is a big while onion cut in vertical slices with the root left on so the slices stay together then dipped in batter and deep fried. As it fries, the "petals" open up and it looks like a flower. It is described as more than 800 calories, 58 grams of fat and 22 grams of saturated fat, plus 1,520 milligrams of sodium. We do not eat them because they are so unhealthy but they are pretty to look at)1 -
We have those fried onions at a steakhouse here, Linda. I avoid them as I can't digest onion!
