My CRV has a lot of safety features my old car lacked, and they took some getting used to. I like the blind spot warning, especially in an SUV because visibility isn’t as good as in a sedan. I’m still getting used to the lane keeping assist feature and not exactly in love with it because I think it’s a little too sensitive. It’s especially annoying in areas where there is or has been recent construction and the lanes have been restriped because that seems to confuse the lane keeping sensors, giving me warnings that I’m drifting from my lane when, in fact, I am not. The forward-looking radar that works with my cruise control has also given me a few problems, though overall it’s a good feature. It also works to cause the car to brake for you if it thinks you’re too close to another car, even if I’m not using cruise control at the time. That took me by surprise once when a car turned in front of me and the car abruptly stopped itself without my input (I saw the car turning and didn’t think I was close enough to it to require action on my part, but my car thought otherwise, lol!). I really like the backup camera and sensors that let you know about cross traffic, but again, it is so sensitive that sometimes blowing shrubbery or trees are sometimes misinterpreted by the car as traffic.
Oh, good heavens! Brakes by itself. This rental had a backup camera and I confess I didn't see the point but then I live on a pretty empty street and I always park away from other cars.0 -
My Sonata was the first car I’d owned that had a key fob. It took a little getting used to, but I quickly came to enjoy the convenience of not having to dig for my keys every time I wanted to drive the car. The other features you mentioned I’ve not had any experience with. My Honda has a gas gauge as well as a mileage range indicator which I like a lot. The electronic parking brake was a little different, but once I figured it out I didn’t mind it. I think some newer cars automatically apply the parking brake whenever you put the car in park and release it when you put the car in drive, but my car does not have that feature. I don’t think I’d like the heads up display feature either. Why does the seat jerk back when you turn off the ignition? Is that supposed to make it easier to exit the vehicle? I don’t think I’d like that either. I’ll definitely be checking those out when I test drive new vehicles.0

When you say you didn't have to dig for keys, do you mean the fob started the car from inside your purse?0 -
I could leave the key fob in my purse or pocket. The car had a push button start, so as long as the key fob was in the car, it would start.0

Maryanne, you’d probably have to work directly with a dealer in West Virginia. Is there an advantage cost wise to doing that, or does that just give you more inventory to select from? And yes, the power lift gate is very handy, especially for a shorter person like myself.0

At any one time, within a 250 mile radius, there are just a couple vans that meet my criteria and some of those have too many miles.0 -

I saw something on Facebook that made me pause — traditionally, the sitting Vice President presides over the certification of the election. So if she wins, she will be presiding over her own certification for President. I wonder if that has ever happened before?
At least we won't have a repeat of Trump pressing Pence to make him president.

On Tuesday DH and I went up to the nearby hospital to get a copy of his sleep study and as we were leaving the information desk, my foot slid and I fell hard, landing on my face, knee and forearms. Immediately I was surrounded by nurses and other hospital staff, as well as a team from the ER who encouraged me to go to the ER to get checked out. I agreed because at the time I was experiencing a lot of pain in my face and was concerned that I might have fractured my cheekbone. After a couple of hours lounging on a gurney, a head CT scan, and a lot of questions I was declared undamaged beyond lots of bruising and sent home. I’ve been sore and achy all over since then and I have a bruise on the bridge of my nose, but otherwise I’m fine. We never could figure out why my food slid out from under me. I was wearing rubber soled shoes, so they weren’t the culprit, but there was nothing on the floor that we could see. DH was able to get his sleep study, so the trip wasn’t a total loss at least.0

Pam, what an awful experience. But at least you were already in the right place to get checked out. DH took a fall about 2 weeks ago. We were visiting our friend in upstate NY for a few days. He has a lake house. DH was walking our friend’s Siberian Husky after dark and he didn’t have a flashlight. They were coming down the steep dirt and gravel driveway. Maggie saw the house and took off at a run dragging DH face first on the driveway. Of course we didn’t seek medical attention. We cleaned up his many cuts and bruises. He was pretty sore the first few days and the cuts were still bleeding despite being bandaged. He’s on a blood thinner so that contributed. He didn’t lose consciousness so we weren’t concerned about concussion but we should have thought of the possibility of a brain bleed. Fortunately he didn’t have one but at wellness checkup with his PC the following week. She told us we should have checked that but enough time had passed to rule that out. He had pain in his chest and elbow so she ordered X-rays to be sure he didn’t crack a rib or break a bone in his elbow. X-rays we’re clear and the soreness has gone away.
On Monday, he had an outpatient procedure to replace his pacemaker battery. It went well but he had a sore arm for several days. We didn’t remember that from the first pacemaker but thinking back, he was in the ICU recovering from triple bypass when they realized he needed the pacemaker. So he was still hospitalized and on pain meds so he didn’t feel any pain in his arm. Interesting that we had forgotten that.
I realized today I hadn’t posted in a week to ten days. As you can see from this, I’ve been busy with all the medical stuff and forgot to post.0 -

I love your cat shirt. I’ll bet Trump doesn’t think Vance was such a great choice now. They’re actually a perfect pair. They open their mouths and trash pours out. And neither walks back the dumb comments. They double down and dig their heels in and defend what they said. At some point, Trump will throw Vance under the bus because that’s what he does. If Trump loses (fingers crossed)it will be Vance’s fault.0 -
I’m feeling better today, but still bruised. The soreness is much improved, but I look like I went a few rounds with one of my enemies, lol!
Helene, I’m so sorry your DH also had a fall! In the ER the doc told me that anyone over age 60 should always be checked for brain bleeding when there is a fall, even if you don’t hit your head because just the jolt of falling could cause bleeding in the brain. I’m glad he’s ok!
I think tRump is definitely having buyer’s remorse over his pick for VP and I’m sure he’s growing extremely frustrated by how well the Harris campaign is going. She’s raising record amounts of money and the polls are showing her gaining on and even passing him before she’s even selected her running mate. I expect another bump once that selection is announced.
In the meantime I’m enjoying watching the gymnastics at the Olympics. Simone Biles is truly amazing, and I have great admiration for Suni Lee and all she’s gone through to be there. All of the gymnasts, both male and female, are amazing. I can’t even imagine trying to do any of the moves they make look so easy!0 -
It’s no wonder Vance is shaping up as a liability. He was Don Jr’s choice. And Jr has never been the sharpest tool in his the toolbox. Talk about buyer’s remorse. Trump’s in GA today. I wonder what the reception from black voters will be.0

The Highlander is a 2021 so it doesn’t have some of the features you didn’t like in the rental car. I think a brand new one probably has some of the features you don’t like. The Camry I test drove had the annoying window display of speed and gas mileage. It also had that seat that slid back to make it easier to get in and out. My car has a regular gear shift rather than push buttons. It has the key fob with push button start which I really like. DH’s truck is a 2023 model. Toyota discontinued the push button so you have have to use a key. I only drove it about 10 miles from the dealer to home so I haven’t explored all the features yet.0

I've been watching bits of the Olympics. I record the primetime program and watch the next evening. I wish they'd show more Olympics and less talking. Last night they had a segment with two guys from SNL. I want to see the sports!
I admit I like the winter Olympics better but some of this has been really interesting. I like the tidbits they show of the more unusual sports. Last night saw the last few minutes of the final judo round!
I'm taking a break from trying to find a new used car so that I can get some CROM stuff done. It feels like I'm always behind!

This must be the week for falls. We were coming home Saturday evening and I was stepping up from the driveway to the sidewalk. It’s a bigger step up than a regular step. I don’t know if I didn’t lift my right foot up enough or if I tripped. I fell, hitting my face on a concrete planter next to the sidewalk. It bled like crazy. I got an instant severe headache. We went right to ER. When the doctor saw me, I mentioned my finger hurt and my wrist was sore. I had a cat scan and hand X-rays. I had bits of concrete in the wound which the doctor irrigated out. He commented the gash went to the skull. I have internal and external stitches. My finger was broken and is splinted. They thought the wrist was okay. They reread the wrist X-rays Sunday and found I have a torn ligament and a wrist fracture. I went home in a brace with instructions to follow up with the orthopedic doctor. That appointment was today and I’m waiting for the hospital to call with an MRI appointment. That will show the wrist damage and whether it will heal itself or if I need surgery. In the meantime, I came home in a cast.0

Oh Helene! I’m so sorry. That sounds like an awful experience. I hope the wrist injury turns out to be as minor as possible and that you heal quickly. I’m so glad you went straight to the ER to get checked out. I’m starting to think I need to have someone make me some clothing out of bubble wrap to protect me when I fall again!0

Maryanne should be extra careful. We don’t want to make this a threesome. I saw the orthopedic doctor yesterday. He looked at the X-ray and agreed there is a wrist fracture. I have my first ever cast to immobilize the wrist. The hospital is supposed to call me about an MRI. Once that’s done, I’m referred to a hand surgeon to evaluate what treatment I need. It may be continue with the cast or it could be surgery. I guess they couldn’t clearly tell how bad it is from the X-ray. The good news is that it’s not painful. I’ll continue to wear the finger splint 6 weeks. That’s a straightforward break and he didn’t see a need for further treatment for the finger. I really liked that doctor but his specialty is knees and hips. The doctor he’s referring me to is the best hand specialist and he sends all his patients to see him.

That’s good news that it appears to be a simple fracture and that it’s not painful. Hopefully the hand surgeon will have a clear plan of action for your recovery.
I’m feeling fine now. I still have bruising on my nose and both knees. The rest of the aches and pains have gone away. I’m having eyelid lift surgery on the 16th and I saw the surgeon yesterday for my pre-op visit. I was concerned that she might want to postpone due to the bruising and swelling on my face, but she was ok with going ahead. I think the bruising and swelling will probably be gone or nearly so by then, just in time to create new bruising and swelling. I think I will be spending the month of August coming up with cover stories for why I look like I got punched in the face!

Helene - oh, no! And your first cast? My last broken wrist required surgery (he fixed my carpal tunnel issue while he was in there LOL). You do need a hand surgeon and you'll probably need a hand physical therapist once the cast comes off! Hopefully you can find one! I had a great one but University of Maryland Medical System bought that hospital and shut it down! Heaven only knows where you'd have to drive to today to get a hand therapist.0

I got the stitches out Friday and now have steri strips so it looks less gruesome. I have a lump next to the gash which is pretty tender. PA said it’s a hematoma and could take months to heal. I’m glad I asked about it because I would have worried when it wasn’t gone in a few weeks. The bruises on my arm above the cast are fading. I have an MRI scheduled tomorrow and I have an appointment to to review the results.0

I can't believe I still occasionally learn something about DH (after 57 years). He grew up in Gettysburg. Apparently David Eisenhower (Ike's grandson) was in his 7th grade class and there was a secret service agent that sat out in the hallway, sitting in a kid's desk, reading a book. I knew David Eisenhower played on my Dad's summer basketball league team (but never thought about the fact that that meant there would have been Secret Service hovering around). And that my grandfather planted rhododendrons at the Eisenhower farm but I never knew DH was in a class with the grandson.0

We we’re watching a story on the cost of back to school supplies. Average family spends over $800 and sometimes go into debt. I wonder if some things couldn’t be used a second year like a backpack. As we were talking, DH said kids in his school had book bags not backpacks and they used them more than a year. He said kids couldn’t take their books home unless they had a book bag. So I just learned a school fact about my DH today.0

MRI was Wednesday. Tech was very kind and made the test easier than I expected. He told me I did well and he only had to do one image twice. He thought he could get a clearer image and he did. I was reading results of test on My Chart and I thought the results were good but I’ll get the official results Monday.0

I had my eyelid lift surgery this morning and it went well. I’m back at home now using an ice pack on it every 10 minutes. I’m having a little bit of pain but not too much so far. I’m hoping the bruising won’t be too bad.0
