Happy Friday everyone!
A few days ago, @biketheworld raised the topic of “freggies” and national recommendations for daily intake.
I sought out and found our “new” Canada Food Guidelines, and was intrigued by the behavioural recommendations that have been added. The link to the full PDF is below.
Healthy eating is more than the foods you eat. It is also about where, when, why and how you eat.
Be mindful of your eating habits
- Take time to eat
- Notice when you are hungry and when you are full
- Be aware of food marketing
Cook more often
- Plan what you eat
- Involve others in planning and preparing meals
Enjoy your food
- Culture and food traditions can be a part of healthy eating
- Eat meals with others
Which, if any of these caught your attention when you read the list?. I know which struck me, and am keen to know your thoughts!

Neat @jamcnewman ... I wasn't aware the guidelines now incorporated these additional recommendations.
I think overall I'm shocked at how much they've addressed the social side of eating. That finding a way to have balance is probably best for most (whatever that looks like). It feels like there's a lot of recommendations tailored towards supporting our families to have healthy relationships with food. Also, the PLAN aspect... what we're all working on here!7 -

It seems that the guidelines are reminding people to not develop disordered eating habits.6 -
Leave it to Canadians to come up with a common sense healthy eating list! @jamcnewman - thanks for this. It’s thought provoking and makes so much sense.
I’ve not been reporting my freggies - seems like I either have 3, or 8.
Exhausting day. Prepped the garden - pulled out fences, yanked out weeds, turned and spread compost, tilled. Then worked on the pond, discovered a snake has taken up residence, heart rate shot up. Hubby and I were both wiped out. I told him that was harder than biking 80 miles.
I have used all 3 pass days. With family coming for a week, it’s unlikely I’ll be able to stay under calories every day. Oh well, I’ll do the best I can and not beat myself up about it.6 -

- Be aware of food marketing: This is the one that stands out for me. I think it helps me the most to really stay aware of this. One thing I read recently was about the use of brightly colored packaging to influence food decisions. They really do market to us like we are small children who will continue to find the most colorful one with the cutest characters to be the most tempting one. I noticed the McDonald´s billboard advertising their brightly colored sugarfilled slushy drinks in their plastic cups--- and my reaction was not wanting one but thinking ¨this is what our world is coming to--- corporations hyping sugar and plastics.¨ And I really noticed walking down the aisles of the grocery-- the tremendous amount of visual marketing with some deceptive health claims added. I do best when I am conscious of these things because my attitude toward these food is different: Instead of feeling like I am missing out on something good passing these foods by, I feel like I am caring for myself and being smart not feeling a compulsive urge to buy them.

This evening we went out for happy hour in the city center of our new town. There is a walking path in the vicinity so we did a long walk afterwards. This was in addition to the treadmill this morning. We're renting a townhouse so I end up going up and down the stairs multiple times every day which has resulted in 10,000+ steps most days this week.
The Canadian food guidelines seem quite sensible. It is nice the acknowledge cultural/social issues with food. I can't say I pay attention to whatever the guidelines are in the US.5 -

Thanks for the insights everyone — I agree with all you have observed! The marketing one struck me also @ideas2 — and, as you noted, it is so prevalent.
Pass day today. We had a lovely visit with one of my longest friends and I was over (but not by much). So pass day #2 used now.4 -

@jamcnewman thanks for the info in your opening comments. I live on my own so involving others in planning or eating is not an everyday occurrence but I do think it's important in the family situation.
I was also struck by the reminder to be wary of marketing, it's so sneaky the way food is labelled " healthy" to tempt you to buy it without reading the label carefully.
Another pass day for me.
We had a good long bike ride but we had rain in the afternoon so I didn't get my time by and in the pool.3 -

What stuck out for me
Be mindful of your eating habits
Because I’m doing a mindfulness guided program through Fitbit and l find it hard to eat without screens/my phone. So excited to challenge myself in that way as well as listen to hunger cues/body.
Cook more often—something I don’t do and desire to do more
- Plan what you eat and getting kids Involve others in planning and preparing meals is dream of mine.
