WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the May 2022 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10863376/may-2022-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until June 1, 2022 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:

Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month, and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.com and create your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

You may see some phrases / words that are unique to our little group when it comes to describing some of our runs. It is a mash-up of words that seem to best describe the way the run felt that day. Here are some examples. Feel free to come up with your own to add to the dictionary 😃

It will be a pretty miserable month (or 5) in Texas, but I'm in for 125 miles 🥵8
-
My marathon plan is by time for all runs other than the long runs, so my goal is just to stick to the plan as best as possible. I also want to incorporate strength training two days per week and be a little more conscious of what I am eating.9
-
thanks Scott. I agree with your assessment of Texas. I am going to work on 125 but fell short in May.5
-
Thanks @scott6255.
I’m back (not that I was actually gone, just haven’t been doing the message boards for a few months).
I’ve had to get my head around my run speeds in my new neighbourhood - I thought I had lost fitness because of much lower mileage thanks to a niggling injury and moving house distractions, however, when I went back to my old neighbourhood for a run, my speed was right back up where it always was. The difference? Thar be hills in Coatesville. Lots of hills. In fact, nothing but hills, whereas the old hood was pretty much dead flat. A 10k run there might get 40 metres of elevation if you’re lucky, whereas 10k here has about 150m, more if you pick the wrong route.
So now that I know I’m not less fit, and instead perhaps even stronger, I’m happy with my running again.
Did an Xterra trail event last Sunday - 18km in all the weather (blazing sunshine through to horizontal rain) and absolutely loved it. Reminded me I love running distance and I can run distance. However, I will concede my new garden is pinching a lot of my weekend time. I’ve adjusted my schedule so I don’t run Saturdays, but this weekend just gone was given over to planting trees (130 or more) which was a pretty good workout that left nothing in the tank for running.
That being said, it is noodling season. It’s almost winter which is mud, sorry, trail running time, which is about endurance rather than speed (for me). My road half marathon buildup doesn’t begin until July so I’ll continue doing what I’m doing until then (i.e. no speed work!)
TL:DR, I’m in for June with the goal of running four times a week.10 -
Thanks @Scott6255!!
@ContraryMaryMary - good too see you back here again!
I am going in for just 70 this month. We are gone for 2 weeks driving to Seattle to visit dd and friends along the way. I have no idea how much running I will actually get in if any.5 -
Thanks @Scott6255 !
Nice to see you @ContraryMaryMary, I hear ya on the hills!
The absolute novice marathon plan I've cobbled together only calls for around 125km in June, which seems pretty low so I may or may not do a bit more depending on how I feel at the time. I'm travelling to see my dad for a few days too, so probably won't get much running done there.
I do want to try and get my elevation up asap, so I might force myself to stick to the low mileage but do as much of it as possible in the mountains. Only trouble with that is transport, I no longer have a car of my own and the way I look and smell after a run at this time of year means they probably wouldn't let me on a bus!
ETA: that brings to mind a suggestion of a monthly question I'm very interested in knowing answers to because I have yet to find anything effective:
What do you do to get the stink out of sweaty running gear? I've tried various things that claim to be specific sports wash as well as vinegar and it just won't go away completely.2 -
@ContraryMaryMary Hills will humble you for sure but definitely make you stronger.eleanorhawkins wrote: »ETA: that brings to mind a suggestion of a monthly question I'm very interested in knowing answers to because I have yet to find anything effective:

I have no magic bullet for you but I do think the sports detergents work better than regular ones. Lately I have also been making sure to get out of my wet clothes asap and drying my clothes out completely before putting them in the hamper. It seems to help. That said, I have a couple of sports bras that will never smell great after a run again. But, they fit great so I just deal with it.2 -
My plan calls for 117 miles. We’ll see. That’s a lot of miles in the summer but most of the runs are fairly short. There are just a lot of them.2
-
Welcome back @ContraryMaryMary! I was actually thinking about you (and @Avidkeo ) yesterday...that we haven't heard from you in a while. Glad to hear everything is good!
@eleanorhawkins I also leave all my sweaty clothes outside to dry before bringing them in to the dirty clothes hamper. It really does help. As for detergent, I think we use the sports detergent made by Tide.3 -
Nice to see you back @ContraryMaryMary ! Hills do make a big difference.
@eleanorhawkins I haven't used any special detergents. Like @martaindale I let mine completely dry before putting them in the hamper. I do have one bra that I would wear more than once before washing because I didn't have enough otherwise. It will never smell the same. It's okay, until it gets wet with sweat again, then it's awful. I try to wear it when I'm not going to be around other people. Now that I have more gear, I make sure I was it after every wear and it seems to be okay. Have you tried baking soda in the wash. I did use that once for when I had the dreaded runners diarrhea and couldn't get the smell out. It seemed to work, but had to wash that skort 3 or 4 times before it went away. The baking soda really helped. I use normal Tide Free detergent otherwise.
I just checked my plan and since it goes by HR and time, not mileage, I'm guessing the plan would be around 68 miles running plus my walking miles. However, I am also trying to plan a trip to FL, so more than likely wouldn't follow the plan while I am there if the past is any sort of predictor of the future. So, my goal for June is going to be 80 miles total of running and fast walking.4 -
I have used vinegar a few times with clothes but have never bought any sport-specific detergents. I too try to let my clothes dry before putting them in the hamper.3
-
I am in for 100 miles for June.4
-
6 sweaty miles for Global Running Day
3 -
I'm in for 160 miles this month. And my side goal is to get consistent with my core work on off days, so let's include 8 core workout sessions as well.
Monthly question: I'm not sure if it's my body chemistry or what, but I don't have an issue with stinky running gear. In fact, I'll often where the same thing for 2 or 3 runs in a row to minimize laundry. That may sound gross but I figure I'm going to be showering after a run anyway so I can wear dirty clothes. What I do after a run is to shower, then hang up my sweaty clothes on the shower bar until they dry. Thankfully my wife isn't grossed out about it. I use the Kirkland (Costco) laundry detergent but I don't think it matters for me.
Welcome back, @ContraryMaryMary !

@scott6255 I just noticed that this thread is in the group board rather than the challenge board. Is this a change we're making?0
-
Haven't run yet this morning but will get the pups out for a short walk and then go for a solo run since it is already too hot for them.
Monthly question - I also use the Kirkland 'Free and Clear' laundry soap. My sweaty running clothes go in a pile in the garage and I wash them every couple of days. They don't typically smell too bad but I have used vinegar with no noticeable difference. I will add in some Oxi-Clean everyone in a while though especially in the summer when I am sweatier.
Also I saw this on FB and thought it was a pretty cool idea for storing lots of running shoes 😊. I have the perfect wall for it in our garage too!6 -
June total: 4.1/117 miles
6/1: 4.1 miles
Super humid this morning combined with hills. It was a tough one. But Strava is saying it was an average effort. Didn’t feel average for sure.
Later in the morning it rained pretty good for 10 minutes and that really knocked the humidity out of the air. We have a couple of wet weather creeks on our property, so I’ll have to take a walk later and see if we got enough to make them run. Now the sun is out and it’s back to feeling super hot. Yesterday, I started weeding the beds around the house. I was staying in the shade so had to pick and choose based on where the sun was. I got 1.5 beds done and it took 2 hours. I still have another couple to do, but they will have to be done in the evening. The sun is unforgiving and I try to avoid direct sun if I can.5 -
@shanaber I like that shoe rack idea. Such a better use of space than on the floor.2
-
Love the shoe rack. But I would worry about scorpions in the garage or other nasties. I have to keep most of mine with laces in a bin because I have a little chewer kit who would demolish them.
Good Start to the month - slow but steady SNEASY 7 miles. I hadn't even planned it as I woke up with my right thigh hurting and wasn't sure I would even be able to run. But it loosened up easily and even tho the dewpoint was 73 plus! I managed to just keep going. This month I am still focusing on a little cut so not eating at maintenance means less cals and a little less energy. Distance over speed is my mantra.5 -
@scott6255 I just noticed that this thread is in the group board rather than the challenge board. Is this a change we're making?
It wasn't deliberate. Every time I start a new thread it seems like I @#$& it up. So I will not be starting any more. Someone else (that knows what they are doing) should volunteer to do it each month.
If we need to move this to the challenge board I guess we need to ask a moderator to do it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯1 -
-
I think I am doing approximately 16 miles per week. So like 65 again? I dunno.
My goal is 4 runs, 4 weight training, 2 rides, and 1 yoga per week. I'm gonna try not to disappear again because I really need to drop some weight/fat/inches. Need to hold myself accountable!7 -
My plan had another foundation run today. I had planned to run before work but then remembered I had a meeting at 8:00am and did not want to risk running late, so I waited until this evening. 91 degrees - ugh! 2.35 miles complete.8
-
Headed out for my usual loop this morning - starts at school and heads uphill for four kilometres, fortunately, the first two kilometres are pretty gentle, however, the next two are brutal. Then it's downhill, and that's even steeper (hence why I always run it clockwise!).
Felt good - kept it gentle at the start, steady through the middle and let loose at the end, clocking my second fastest segment on the downhill at the end, which is pretty good since I've raced it three times! All technique though, as I wasn't pushing hard at all - focused on form and pumping my arms to facilitate my stride. Worked a treat.9 -
-
6 miles tonight. The goal was easy miles but there's a 0.34 mile Strava segment I'm trying to smash so I pushed that and got a new PR and am up to 12th place. Realistically I could get as high as 6th if I pushed it and endured some pain.
All in all, a great run.
6/160 for June6 -
@martaindale - I have been working on my garden beds too as well as trying to treat the weeds in our lawn. I had planned to over seed the lawn in the backyard but with the drought I couldn't water the way it needs. Now we have these burr clover weeds everywhere. I spray then with vinegar which kills them and isn't harmful to Hobbes. Unfortunately they have dropped so many burrs already, I think I need a yard vacuum to get them all up.
@Scott6255 - don't worry about where the challenge is posted - in a group or in the challenge section. It may be a little more difficult for some to find but maybe someone else will find it there that wouldn't have otherwise. I will try to remember next month to set it up under the challenges.
@Mari33a - so great that you ran with your pup! You will have to post a few pictures please!
I got in a lot of activity today. Walking with the pups then going for a decent run by myself. It was hot so I did 60/40 run/walk intervals. I had to stop a few times just to cool down a little. I even stopped in the bathroom on the trail just to splash water in my face and jumped into a cool shower as soon as I got home. I did end up with 5.63 miles running and 1.62 miles of fast walking with the pups.6 -
June total: 7.1/117 miles
6/1: 4.1 mile
6/2: 3 miles
Went back to the newly discovered nature preserve trail. There were actually people out there today. Saw 2 women running, 1 guy fishing, and a woman loading her SUP into her truck. Also saw some deer and lots of birds.5 -
Found it!
Had to stop running last month and didn't manage the 60km I'd set myself. Oh well.. here we go again.
01.06. 5.52km at 8:09min/km
02.06. 3.00km at 7:46min/km
8.52/60km
The run yesterday just went well, and it was so relaxed and easy to run. Today things didn't go so well, but I was faster, and had somewhat sore muscles. So no complaint. I'm off to a 4 day trip tomorrow, thus not sure whether I'll be running those four days.5
