@7lenny7 ah ok that makes sense, guess I missed or forgot your greater plans. I'm possibly doing something similar with a couple of mountain HMs in September and early October in preparation for my 35k at the end of October. Still damn impressive though, even more so when you talk about more than one 50k race relatively in a row lol.
Sounds like your game of stick or snake would almost have been better off being a snake! Hope there's no long-lasting damage.
@polskagirl01 well done making that decision, I'm sure it was a tough one but it sounds like it was the right one. We do need to remember that we're meant to enjoy these things! I saw something on social media the other day that reminded me of that... a spectator sign towards the end of some marathon that read "remember you PAID to do this!"
As I'm going to the UK on the 18th, my crazy mind decided I need to get this month's HM distance done this weekend just in case I can't do it after I get home again, so I've tweaked this week's runs by shortening today's and tomorrow's to balance out the mileage. It was already around 27C (80F ish) at 8 am, so I was quite glad it was only 2 miles. Such a relief not to have to force myself to run mid-morning anymore. I want to make a solo venture up to the top of the nearest mountain on Saturday morning, really need to make sure I'm up and out there early to avoid the heat.

Thanks @katharmonic . I was thinking last night how I really need to run somewhere besides my driveway. I'm getting tired of doing laps, so I can see how changing up your route a little bit is motivating. Great running.
Nice job on the treadmill run @Scott6255 .
@kgirlhart That is hot for 4:30 am! Great job on getting it done.
@polskagirl01 You just broke your shoes in right! Now you won't worry about getting them dirty. Nice running and love the road and wildlife.
Great running and planning @eleanorhawkins . You are having hot weather too. It does make a difference.3 -
Good morning/afternoon! Last night I went to watch the synchronous fireflies at Rocky Fork State Park in Erwin, TN. It was pretty cool to see them in action and to get to see the Blue Ghost fireflies also. Unfortunately, the peak viewing time was 10:15 pm so I didn’t get home and in bed until almost 1:00 am. Managed to get up at 6:00 this morning and drag my butt out for a 4 mile run. The firefly event is only for three or four evenings and you have to enter a lottery system to get selected to attend the viewing. Tonight is the last night and since rain is in the forecast, they invited the lottery winners for tonight to attend last night also. Even still, there were only about 40 people there.
@shanaber – One of my close friends had bunion surgery in September of last year. It was using a relatively new technique and only one doctor in our area does it. Hers was pretty severe and had given her problems for years. I think he also shortened a toe while he was at it. She was out of commission for a few weeks but was back running by the first of the year and ran a marathon last month. I think the surgery technique and recovery time has really improved in recent years.
Sounds like a wise decision moving to the 25K @polskagirl01. Good reminder that we are doing this for fun and for our health and when it causes stress, it’s time to reevaluate and move on.
A few pics from my runs in Ireland are in the spoiler below.
Overlooking the town of Killarney.
This beautiful building appears to be an old hospital. I had to run closer so I went over to it. It was enclosed by a fence and a few of the windows were broken out making it seem a little spooky.
A walk on the Aran Islands
Found a wonderful running path along the shore in Galway.
Views walking along the Cliffs of Moher.
Some of the deer in Phoenix Park in Dublin. The park had grassy and paved trails.
You simply can't visit Ireland without visiting a pub!7 -

@Teresa502 Glad you had a good time in Ireland. The pictures look beautiful! Definitely going to have to get there. Also the fireflies sound so cool. We don’t have them here but I remember seeing them at my great grandparents house in Missouri growing up. Magical!
@eleanorhawkins I totally get what you are saying about looking back at where you started with running. I was the same way. I set out with the goal of being able to run a 5k a few days a week. A HM seemed like an insurmountable distance. Now I have done several and am building up to marathon training, a sentence I never thought I would utter. I’m not quite to the point where I am in HM distance shape year round, but that is actually a goal I am setting for myself coming out of marathon training. I still look at the super long distances and think it just doesn’t seem possible to run those, but when I look back I can really appreciate that I am doing something now that I didn’t think I was capable of years ago.
@katharmonic Good luck on your spartan race! I have done exactly 1 obstacle race. I hated it with every fiber of my being and will never do it again. Never.

June total: 31.7/117 miles
6/1: 4.1 mile
6/2: 3 miles
6/3: 3.2 miles
6/4: 8.2 miles
6/5: 3.2 miles
6/6: 5 miles
6/8: 5 miles
Rest day yesterday. My husband joined me in the hill country a couple of days ago so we did some much needed yard work in the morning then retreated into the AC and watched movies for the rest of the day.
Today, I ran 5 miles. Not much cloud cover today so my sunblock got a good workout too. The breeze is pretty steady out here so that helps a lot with the feel of the warmer temps. I get out around 7am most days so as I am finishing the sun is getting to a point that I get to experience the full sun. It’s amazing how the same temperature feels so much warmer if the sun is on you.4 -
01.06. 5.52km at 8:09min/km
02.06. 3.00km at 7:46min/km
08.06. 3.02km at 8.08min/km
11.50/60km
Quite far behind, at 4.5km but I was on a super strenuous short trip to Serbia, getting up at 5 to catch my flight, being rather tired all trip long and still walking long distances, at humid 30+ C. So that was totally worth it. Today's run didn't go too well, but that's not surprising. It never does after flights for some reason. So whatever. I started again.
Btw, how come I don't get notifications if someone mentions me within a group?3 -
@polskagirl01 sounds like you've made a good decision and I hope it really helps reduce your stress.
@teresa502 gorgeous pictures. I want to run that path in Galway and see those cliffs!
Thanks @kgirlhart and @martaindale
@martaindale sounds like obstacle races may not be your thing?? Lol. I think I'm winding down on my obstacle racing enthusiasm but I had 4 more races paid for that got deferred so I will see if I can finish that out. I know what you mean about being amazed about where you'd never thought you'd be in running. Good luck with your marathon training - you'll rock it. (And that's where I say never again - to marathon training and running a marathon )
@yirara I don't know why you don't get notifications but I'm mentioning you to test it out.

Decent mid-week run today. I met my most dedicated marathoner friend for her "easy 4" tonight after work. It was only low 70s but I felt very sweaty after when I went into the grocery store right by the trail. But dinner and dog treats had to be obtained.5 -
June Goal: 100 Miles
6/1: 5.51 miles
6/2: 5.04 miles
6/5: 7.10 miles
6/7: 5.51 miles
6/8: 6.01 miles
29.17/100 miles completed for June
I thought today's run would be a struggle because it was 80°F when I got up. But it turned out to be a pretty good run. The sprinklers were on at the courthouse, so I ran through them and it really helped. I ended up running 6 miles today.
Beautiful pictures @teresa502

@7lenny7 - Ouch! Hope your foot is ok from the stick incident! Sounds like a great run until that point!
@polskagirl01 - that path could almost qualify for a Spartan race... I am amazed your shoes didn't end up muddier but they are definitely broken in now! Speaking of that, I had a running acquaintance tell me once to kick some dirt on my new shoes because they were just to bright and new 😁
@katharmonic - good luck with your Spartan race! Hope there are no lost shoes!
@eleanorhawkins - I also am amazed sometimes when I look back to not even liking to run, most of my life actually even as a kid, then finding it a challenge that I was determined to overcome, to getting to the point that I loved it and finally, to not being able to even imagine not running. For me now I also have to consider that I am very lucky to still be able to run at my age. I see so many others my age and younger even, who are barely able to walk a mile let alone run many.
@Teresa502 - Love the Ireland pictures! It is definitely on my bucket list places. My family is from the UK in general (England and Scotland on one side and Ireland on the other) so I really need to get there and explore (and run!). Di you plan the locations on your own or through a tour/travel group?
I have never heard of synchronous fireflies. I do remember seeing fireflies as a kid when we visited family in TN.
I am going to ask my PCP for a referral to a podiatrist in Oct when I see her for my physical unless it gets much worse. I am hoping for a nonsurgical correction if one exists but it may be to the point that surgery is my only option.
@AlphaHowls - 1500 days!! Wow over 4 years!! And over 2 of it at HM distance! You are just amazing!
@yirara - We used to get notifications on mentions in the forums but with the changes made recently it seems that went away along with the ability to search within a discussion... When I was flying a lot for work it was tough getting a run in after. I am not sure if it is because the travel is stressful and tiring or if it has to do physiologically with the flying.
No run for me yesterday or today. Yesterday I had PT and then my follow up with the ortho doc. My shoulder is doing well and once I finish my last 2 PT visits I will be considered done. He did say if I have any problems I can just send him a message. He was pleased in general with how I have healed and that no surgery is needed (me too!).
Today was another day to be out of our house for the housekeeper so we took Hobbes for a day at our favorite wineries. It was hot - 90F+ but not too bad relaxing in the shade.Tomorrow and Friday we have excessive heat warnings (over 100F) so no running for Hobbes but I will try to get something in.

None of my friends were available to run at 5:00 am this morning so I waited until it was daylight and ran in a residential section near my office. It was a beautiful morning. Cloudy with the temperature at 70F at the start.
@katharominic – Good luck and have fun with your Spartan race. The only obstacle course I have ever done was purely fun. The slide was even an inflatable one!
@shanaber – We used a tour company for most of our outings. I was disappointed in their communication or lack thereof. We booked the tour in 2019 for 2020, but then you know…They didn’t issue refunds so we had a credit with them to use. When I visited Ireland a few years ago, we had a rental car and designed our own routes staying at different B&Bs each night. That would be my preference; however, neither I nor the ladies I traveled with this time were comfortable with driving on the opposite side of the road. So glad your shoulder is doing better! That Hobbes is so darn cute!
4 -
@shanaber I 🖤 Hobbes so much! He is so handsome.
I went out yesterday at 6am. It was 81° and we hit our first 110°. It's officially hot here. 🥵4 -
June Goal: 100 Miles
6/1: 5.51 miles
6/2: 5.04 miles
6/5: 7.10 miles
6/7: 5.51 miles
6/8: 6.01 miles
6/8: 6.32 miles
35.49/100 miles completed for June
I had a fantastic run this morning. It was only 70°F when I got up and so I decided to run a 10K. It was a little warm, but for June in Texas it was really nice. There was enough breeze to cool you off without being too much wind. I ran through the sprinklers at the courthouse again which always feels good. It was a really lovely morning and I felt really good today. Like I could run forever. I was halfway through before I even realized it. I would have run more if I didn't have to go to work.
@shanaber So glad your shoulder is doing better. Hobbes is such a cutie.
@RunsOnEspresso That is hot. We have had several 100+ days this year but so far I think 108 has been the hottest.

1 Jun - Walk - 1.00 mile - driveway laps and trimmed trees for 1.75 hours
2 Jun - Walk - 1.00 mile - treadmill
3 Jun - Walk - 0.70 mile - Ran 2.50 miles - driveway laps
4 Jun - Walk - 0.70 mile - Ran 3.00 miles - driveway laps
5 Jun - Walk - 1.00 Mile - driveway laps
6 Jun - Walk - 0.70 mile - Ran 2.60 miles - driveway laps
7 Jun - Walk - 0.70 mile - Ran 2.30 miles - driveway laps
8 Jun - Walk - 1.00 mile - Treadmill
9 Jun - Walk - 0.70 mile - Ran 3.00 miles - local rural road - mowed later
20.9/80 miles for the month
When I got up this morning, I planned to mow and then run. But, I changed it around and I'm glad I did because I'm not sure I would have had the energy to do the run as well as I did had I mowed first. I was able to take more than the normal amount of breaks while mowing - much needed as my legs felt like jelly at one point.
The plan called for 5 min Zone 1, 5 min Zone 2, 8x(1 min Zone 5, 2 min Zone 1), 5 min Zone 1. It was 11:00 before I got out the door, but only 73F, partly cloudy, 7 mph cool breeze, and 65% humidity. Not horrible. I decided to run out the road which is not as steep as my driveway. (Three miles on the driveway is about 320 feet of elevation gain. Today's run was 175 feet.) I did almost all of the repeats on a section of the road that is fairly flat/slightly downhill. The only downfall was that there's little to no shade on that section. I walked almost all of the recovery times, especially after the first two. I was very pleased that in those 8 minutes, I ran a total of .91 miles for an average pace of 8:47 min/mile. I know, I couldn't have done that for much more than a minute, but it's still an improvement for me. My fastest minute was at a 8:31min/mile pace and the slowest was 9:38 min/mile which was the 7th one that I intentionally slowed a little so I'd have more left for number 8. My total run was 3.00 miles in 38:57 minutes for an average pace of 13:29 min/mile, which is pretty good considering I walked 13:33 minutes of that. I also walked 0.7 miles total for warm up and cool down.
I came in and rested a little over an hour and had a Gatorade, then went out and mowed my lawn. Total mowing time was 1:45:12 minutes and I traversed 2.03 miles. I took three breaks that totaled 55 minutes.
I did stop during my easy run and take some pictures of wildflowers that were in my fence row.
Butterfly weed.
Wild rose.
@Teresa502 I've heard of the synchronous firefly event and thought it would be neat to see, but never applied. I'm glad you got to see it, even if it meant a 4 mile run on very little sleep. Love your pictures from Ireland. Such beautiful places to run and walk.
You are amazing @AlphaHowls !
Great running @martaindale !
@yirara Great job doing what you can do. I have a hard time exercising when I'm not at home too. As for notifications, maybe check your settings and see if you have notifications turned off.
@katharmonic I'm sure your family and puppy were glad you went to the store sweaty.
Nice run @kgirlhart . Glad you got to run through the sprinklers. I wonder if someone reviews security cameras and sees you doing that? I'm sure if they do, it makes them smile.
@shanaber So glad your shoulder is better and doesn't require surgery! Love the pictures of your day out.
@shanaber and @RunsOnEspresso Soooo hot where you two are. I think I would be hitting the treadmill.
@Scott6255 Glad to see the stick didn't cause you to have to skip any runs.3 -
@shanaber glad to hear your shoulder is doing so much better and no surgery! That's excellent news. Hobbes is so cute enjoying his day out at the winery.
I don't envy your heat @shanaber and @RunsOnEspresso. @kgirlhart has the right idea with sprinkler running!
@quilteryoyo nice paces for your workout! That's a lot with all that mowing too. Glad you were hydrating and taking breaks.

It was raining this morning so I did a treadmill warmup run before strength training. A pretty cool day today, I think it only got into the low 60s. I closed my windows in my bedroom because I was chilly. I'd really like it to warm up a bit for this weekend so if you all could send some of your extra heat this way I'll take it off your hands. Not all of it, mind you! Maybe we can split the difference.
3 -
Thanks @katharmonic . Sounds like nice weather for you, except for the rain. Cold rain is the worst. Hoping it warms up a bit for you.1
-
I sent those shoes with the strange wear back and they gave me what I paid for them on a coupon valid for a year. Result! Can't decide whether to grab a new spare pair straight away, or wait and see if the Brooks Cascadias go on sale as I've been wanting to try them.
6 -
@quilteryoyo the butterfly weed is really beautiful. I haven't seen that before. Thank you for identifying it. We are headed into blazing heat this next couple weeks so I hope to be vampirabON and get out before the sun is up or at least while it is still low enough my streets are shaded.
@shanaber is that grey I see on Mr Hobbes?!!!!!
1/3 of the way thru June and I am at 44.66 miles so it's been a good start to hit 100 mile goal.
I am enjoying reading all the updates from everyone and sorry I can't comment on them all as my brain is fried.6 -
June total: 38.8/117 miles
6/1: 4.1 mile
6/2: 3 miles
6/3: 3.2 miles
6/4: 8.2 miles
6/5: 3.2 miles
6/6: 5 miles
6/8: 5 miles
6/9: 3.1 miles
6/10: 4 miles
Couple of easy runs the last 2 days. This morning I saw 2 roadrunners running across the road, as they should be.
Yesterday after my run I took my husband to the nature preserve and we hiked. I wanted him to see the trail. It was getting really warm by the time we wrapped up and the sun was relentless. But still a good hike.
5 -
@eleanorhawkins I’m glad they gave you a refund for those shoes. FWIW, I use cascadias and really like them.
@shanaber So glad to hear you won’t need surgery!
@katharmonic I would send you all the heat if I could!1 -
01.06. 5.52km at 8:09min/km
02.06. 3.00km at 7:46min/km
08.06. 3.02km at 8:08min/km
10.06. 3.23km at 8:03min/km 10x pace repeats
14.77/60km, 5.2km behind.
Still didn't go too well, but today were pace repeats anyway (short intervals with faster steps). So basically.. I ran. Next run will be slower and longer I hope, and maybe I'll catch up with my distance goal. Lets see. At least no further trips planned this month apart from maybe the one or other daytrip during weekends.
4 -
@eleanorhawkins I also really like the Cascadias.1
-
I'm the odd ball that doesn't like the Cascadias. I want to so bad. I once even wore brand new shoes for a 30k race over my cascadias 😆4

RunsOnEspresso wrote: »I'm the odd ball that doesn't like the Cascadias. I want to so bad. I once even wore brand new shoes for a 30k race over my cascadias 😆
Lol, yeah, one of my worries is not having tried them. Maybe I'll see some in the uk in a shop to try on. When I went to have my gait analysis for shoes the first pair he handed me were Glycerins. Too expensive, but the memory of that spongy feel has stuck!
Having said that, the trail shoes I use now (after disastrously thinking I'd be ok in cheap Decathlon ones) are Hoka Speedgoats and anything else is bound to feel thin-soled...
Still dark here, having breakfast and then I'm off for some mohntain therapy 😁6 -
13.2

13.1 miles this morning. So freaking 🥵 79°F barely a breeze, very humid, and all at 6am. And it's just going to get worse from here. But running with by bro made it tolerable. Doubt I would have finished the HM without him.

18.77/60km, 3.2km behind target.
still not good, but a lot better. That's something. Maybe I'll get towards longer runs again.8 -
That's great @eleanorhawkins . Must mean that they could tell it was a manufacturing issue. If you wait, just make sure you put yourself a deadline to spend it on your calendar so you don't forget it. If I didn't, I'd forget.
Good luck getting up earlier @SummerSkier ! I may have to start running more on the treadmill since I tend to run later in the day.
@martaindale Nice job on the runs and the hike with DH. It's very pretty. With those cactus, it just looks really hot.
You are doing great @yirara ! Keep up the good work.
@Scott6255 Great job on a HM in those weather conditions. Glad you had a running partner to help push you on.

27.35/80 miles for the month
Yesterday was supposed to have been a recovery run, which has a goal of keeping my HR between 120 and 128. Since I know that is "impossible" for me to actually run and keep it that low, I opted for a 35 minute Wun instead and that worked out great as far as HR goes.
Today, I slept late, which I think was much needed. So, I didn't get out for my run until 10:30. It wasn't horrible, with the temp being 72F and 65% humidity. The driveway was still shady, so that helped too. Still, I was a sweaty mess at the end. Seems I always am. Today's run was a struggle though. My legs just didn't want to go and on the first lap, I got a whiff of some plant that seemed to affect my breathing. I stopped when I got back home and used my Albuterol inhaler, but think it didn't kick in for about 15 minutes. So, it was a struggle. I don't mind forcing my legs to move, but I haven't figured out how to force my lungs to work better. My HR behaved though, probably because of the slow pace, and stayed under 143 bpm. My run was pretty slow, at 13:29 min/mile. I'm just glad I got it done then.
After resting and doing some paperwork/computer things when the internet cooperated, I went out and trimmed more trees along the driveway for about an hour. It may take all summer, but if I keep chipping away at it when I'm home, I'll eventually get it done.
I made reservations for a trip to FL the end of the month. I'm going to stay at a B&B that has a private beach and will let me bring Tippy. I'll only be there Mon - Sat morning, but, if I like it, it may be something I do every time I go down instead of staying with the step-family. I love them and want to see them, but I don't really feel like it is a vacation, if that makes sense. Hopefully, this will and I'll still get to see everyone.7
