@GRANDMAJACKIE - I hope your move goes (or has gone) smoothly!
@CLEPANT - I'm so glad to hear Brinkley is doing much better! And scary story about the black bear!! Those bears don't mess around.
@KAR328 - Oh wow! I think if you had gone in right after you fell, they'd also have to ask "Do you have any concerns going home and you are in a safe environment?" You could reply "About as safe as anywhere!" Not to minimize the seriousness of either your incident or what that question really implies...but I'm so glad you're not hurt any worse!! I hope you continue to heal fully. :flowerforyou:
@JANET - Safe travels and Happy Birthday to your Mother! I'm sorry you can't be there, but I totally understand. ((HUGS)))
MY HOW TIME FLIES! Wow, three days gone in a blur! Things are continuing to settle down in my little world, thankfully and very gratefully. I will welcome a state of boredom cheerfully and with open arms!
Please feel free to skip to the end if you don't have the time or desire to read the following...
My wife's heel is doing really well. Infection appears to be gone after her second round of antibiotics and the huge hole of the incision is visibly getting narrower. Lots of new "silver skin" forming inside. The widest part of the opening is down to under a 1/2 inch and it is much less deeper. Still changing the bandages twice a day and taking every step possible to keep everything that comes near it sterile. Her surgeon and his PA are thrilled with how it looks and have taken her off of frequent monitoring every 2-3 days. Her next appointment is around 2 weeks out so that's really great!
Her father is also doing so much better! I don't recall where I left off...but quick summary: Last day of Memorial weekend, was take to the ER after he fell backwards downstairs carrying groceries in when one of his weak knees gave out, fractured his femur, not at the hip but at the "corner" where the bone turns downward. Had a rod and a pin & screw put in. In the hospital 5 days due to low hemoglobin so monitoring for internal bleeding. None found, got blood transfusion, sent to transitional care facility (TCU). There 3 days and started PT, pain in chest, back to ER, scan found huge saddle clot between heart to both lungs (the "widowmaker"), surgery to remove it, also had near entire blockage in leg so surgery the again next morning to remove that. Surgeon showed us pics of both procedures and the clots looked like large earthworms. Now back at the TCU, six days constipated and REALLY sick and understandably unhappy and very ornery. I mean, he IS an 81 y.o. former Marine so the ornery part is not all that unusual... . That finally resolved overnight right before the day of his being transported back to the surgeon for routine followup. His mood and motivation really improved after he asked the Doc if he was going to have to live in a nursing home going forward and the Doc kinda sputtered, smiled and said, "Phhhlllbbpt! WHY?!? Not at all! Do your PT and get your functional strength back and you'll be able to go back home or wherever you want to go!" He also had a shower and felt more human again, went to the PT room and did 7 minutes on an exercise bike plus some other stuff! So that was HUGE! He's continuing PT every day and OT (sitting up and transitioning from bed-to-standing-to chair and back, dressing himself, bathroom and grooming, etc.) Moving in the correct direction finally!
As for me, I was scheduled for a colonoscopy the day Jen's Dad was taken back to the ER with chest pains so having been up most of the night prepping, she had to hobble to the car with her super painful heel, drive an hour to the hospital, and hang out with her sister alone. I was so busy all week that I didn't read my C prep instructions until the night before. Totally my bad...that was on me. I got home around 11pm from a dinner of a big burger, tots, a dessert I split with my wife, and an adult beverage...all of which were no-no's so I was way behind on my prep. I took the laxative pills and started on my 64oz Powerade/Miralax cocktail. I finished around 2:00am. Nothing was moving yet and it really should've been. So I climbed into bed. My first mistake. My busy week meant like 3-4 hours of sleep each night for the last week so I slept HARD. Let's just say I didn't wake up when the Miralax began to work. My alarm went off at 6:30am. UH OH. I ran to the bathroom and *sort of* made it to the toilet. Then I'm cleaning that up and then jumping into the shower to rinse off while Jen is stripping the bed and throwing it into the washer. She grabs a spare sheet and blanket, put on her CPAP and eye masks, her head no sooner hits the pillow when the phone rings and of course it was her sister telling us Dad went back to the ER with chest pains. She leaves, I'm worried I'm not nearly cleaned out well enough so I do another laxative pill and nearly full round of 50oz of Powerade/Miralax. My appt wasn't until 2:30, but I was ready & cleared out by then. But they make you bring a driver so I had to call around and find an available friend or neighbor to take me since Jen was now unavailable. Ugh. Once there during intake, one of the questions was "Do you have any redness, swelling, or infection anywhere on your body?" Off-handedly & not thinking much of it, I said that my ankles were pretty swollen and my left leg was a little red and tender just above that ankle because I have been up and walking on it several hours each night the previous week. She asked me to roll my compression sock down to see it. She feels it for warmth then goes to get the Doc doing my C. He said, I'm sorry but you'll have to reschedule and we can't do your C until your primary Doc checks it out. It could be nothing, cellulitis, or a clot but we don't want you under full anesthesia until we know for sure. Apart from being MORE than upset I wasn't getting my C, I was more worried about calling Jen that I might have a clot or cellulitis while she's sitting in the ER with her Dad with clots and whose Mom died from a long bout of cellulitis after being bit by a brown recluse spider. But I called her and told her without specifically mentioning either of those words. My Primary Doc was almost literally across the street so my friend drove me there. They wouldn't see me without an appointment of which they had none. Turns out even if they did, they didn't have any imaging equipment to rule out a clot anyway so I'd have to go somewhere else. They recommended the Urgency Room (UR) in town 5 miles away. We drove there. Sign on the door, "Closed". They had a busted water pipe. That left 2 other UR's in the metro area...20 and 45 miles away almost in rush hour now. We looked online to make sure they were open and saw you have to have an appt because they were slammed with the one being closed. Everyone was going to the closest one so appts were 4-5 hours out. We looked at the further one. They had tons of immediate appts so I guess we're going there. We arrive an hour later, I get an ultrasound of both legs and thankfully no clots. It's cellulitis, but not serious and very treatable. PA wrote a scrip for antibiotics and I was on my way home. My friend had no idea what they were in for when they agreed to drive me. But that reminds me, I still need to get her some thank you flowers and sugar-free candies/chocolate.
TLDR; WELL beyond "When it rains, it pours!" But me, my wife, and her Father are doing great considering!
Have a great weekend, everyone, and PLEASE STAY SAFE!!!!!!!!!
Dave

@Dave: What a ride you, your wife and FIL have been on. It s like somehow the throttle got stuck and there was no way to get off. Oh the femur is such a rough surgery with rod and pins. And say no more about him being a marine. My dad was from stubborn German fwmily and a Marine to boot. It was always a running battle.
I am glad they found his clots and he will be allowed to return home. I am sure that meant a lot for him to hear. And you and your colonoscopy prep to cellulitis…wow.
So glad your wife is on the road to recovery. You certainly went through a tsunami. Glad all of you survived this and are doing well. I think you both meed another retreat or vacation after all of this.

Not sure how many miles I will get in this week. We are in for some wicked heat here in the east and I just hope that I can maintain my person daily goal to keep my own streak going. Pup and I are walking early and near sunset to keep him off the asphalt as to not burn paw pada. Trying to get yard work done in the shaded areas and will be on watering brigade this week.
Stay safe for those in high heat warnings, Belated Happfy Father’s Day to all our dads.

I just about quit everything and walked away. I just found out my second vet is quitting. He has a really good reason. He's been trying to purchase the families 1600 acre farm near Austin. They initially said no but now a few years later they came back and said they would consider his offer. I can't blame him for leaving but it takes so long to find ER vets that I just don't know that I have it in me anymore to work over a 100 hours a week. Being homeless in Seattle and letting society support me for awhile is starting to sound more and more attractive. I hate to sound like I'm whining. I read about some of the problems you guys are going through and this must not seem like a big deal. I don't have a FIL who is tossing clots faster than my neighbor is tossing bean bags playing Corn Hole. I don't have damaged muscle slowing down my PT. I don't have a dogs with what sounds like Ehrlichia. The worst to me, I don't have a mother with dementia. I really hope those of you with problems that can be healed will heal quickly. I hope those of you with problems that can't be healed will have the strength and support to endure. I'm planning on hanging in there until I can't. I really appreciate all the support you guys have given over the years. You'll never know how much it has meant to me.2

@Dean: I am so sorry to read about another vet leaving and you just getting back on two legs again after surgery just stinks.I don’t blame you for wanting to throw in the stethescope. We never had zero vet shortages here until Covid hit and everyone started adopting dogs. Even our regular vet told me not to adopt as they couldn’t take us back due to a wait list. We waited till things settled down. I have a great Emergency Hospital literally minutes from my house and they could not see my pup because he was not sick enough. They told me at midnight, maybe they could see him at noon the next day. Fortunately I found someone that would see him. Even when his dad ate half his water dish and they told me they couldn’t see him. I took him home and gave him olive oil and walked him for hours like a horse with colic until he past a boat load of plastic.
Don’t ever feel you can’t share here. We are always here for you. I so admire what you do every day to try and help our pets. Hang in there.I will keep your need for another vet in my prayers.
Keeping everyone in my prayers this week for healing, safe travels, resolutions to personal needs as well as grace to get each of you through whatever it is you are going through.

The first day of our heat wave brought 70 mph winds and wind sheers they snapped off trees and took out power every where. I sure hope the rest of the week is calm. Here is Brinkley’s dad. He and his mate Ruby were buried in a down tree. It is a miracle they survived,

Many of us are still out of power in this brutal heatwave. We officially had a down burst which. literally shattered trees every where around us. 95,000 of us out of power in near 100 degree temps, It was a pool party for pups in my back yard today for Brinkley and friends. Pavement to hot to walk.

CONGRATS on making GOAL, @GRANDMAJACKIE!!!
@DEAN - I'm SO SORRY to hear about your other vet leaving!! My heart goes out to you! That really IS a big deal working those sorts of hours! Aside from just your basic physical need for sleep, you also need time off and away to recharge mentally & emotionally. The cortisol levels from maintaining that sort of work schedule (especially doing something that all too often is emotionally draining) can be just as dangerous as blood clots and serious infections. I think about you often and how hard that must be. I sincerely wish there was a good and lasting solution for you. Are there any other clinics within a reasonable distance that are not as overtaxed that by you joining, it would be an even healthier environment for everyone there? Man, I really feel for you and hope this situation does not go on any longer that it should.

@DEAN - I'm sorry, I don't know all of the details and I don't mean to suggest an off-the-cuff simple solution. You're a pretty sharp guy and I have no doubt that you've had plenty of time to reflect and brainstorm about this and are already poring over the pros & cons of every conceivable solution.
My wife reminds me (often LOL) that it's (stereo)typically in men's nature to switch into a logical problem-solving mode rather than just shut up, listen, and support when someone in their orbit that they care about says they're going through something unless they literally ask for help. They just want to vent and get it out.
It's not any extra burden on the rest of us. Everybody on this planet is dealing with something, but the upside is even though we're working through various "stressors" I'll call it, listening and sharing to someone else's takes our mind off of ours for a while.
So, just know that firstly, and most importantly, we ALL care about you here. And ANYTIME you want to vent, let 'er rip. And if you need more, I'm here for you just as I'm sure many others here are...and as you've been for me. I sure appreciated that.
