Hello Everyone and Happy July!

IMG_4079.jpeg

Halfway through 2025!

Think back for a moment to six months ago. It was January 1st, the first day of a brand new year. If you're like most people, you probably set some goals for 2025. Many of you have accomplished the resolutions you set in January or are well underway to completing them. You set a goal, you created a realistic plan for achieving that goal, and you committed to the daily actions, that through repetition, bloomed into habits. Thank you for sharing your progress, achievements, and challenges along the way! We learn so much from one another.

Let’s make July our reset month! There are still 6 months (26 weeks, 183 days) left in 2025...plenty of time to grow some new healthy habits! If those goals you set in January still seem out of reach or you've set some new goals since January, or if you are new to our group and habit building, let’s make this our New (Half) Year in July!

What would you like to be different in your life by December? To make that resolution happen, what will be your focus this July?

Let’s start with sharing

  1. A fun thing you plan to do in July: Camping, Beach Days, Vacation, Big Fourth of July celebration?
  2. The habit you plan to focus on this month?
  3. What’s your favorite thing about summer?
  4. What’s your least favorite part of summer
  5. Do you have a plan for dealing with the weather?

New to Habit Building?
Please review our Newcomer’s Guide and our Nuts and Bolts of Habit Building as it will help you get started.

    Let’s start with sharing

    1. A fun thing you plan to do in July - I’m going to Costume College with my sister on the weekend of July 31-August 3
    2. The habit you plan to focus on this month: Fasting ⌛️
    3. What’s your favorite thing about summer? Because I taught for a million years, I always associate summer with the long vacation.
    4. What’s your least favorite part of summer. The heat! 🥵
    5. Do you have a plan for dealing with the weather? Get out in the morning and or evening.

    My half year reflection:

    • Reading goal - 28/40- I’m well ahead of the halfway point; however,
    • 365 hours outside- I’m at 152, definitely not halfway there. (Rx - Do yoga or strength training outside?).
    • Active minutes 20 minutes a day for 365 days =7300. I’ve already got 13,213 (an average of 73 active minutes per day), so I’m way ahead on that although June was my lowest month.
    • 1000 miles this year goal - I’m well ahead of schedule at 686 mile

    1. This July I will establish an intermittent fasting habit.

    2. The small, actionable steps I plan to take towards this goal - I will stop eating after supper.

    3. My reminder or cue to keep up with my habit - tap my fasting app to track my fast

    5. My reward for maintaining the habit - stronger muscles and more muscle versus fat & a mini celebration singing (hmmm, I think I need a playlist of fasting songs) 🤔

    6. How can we support you? Cheer me on/admire my ability to do this

    7. What will success look like at the end of July ? I will have lost a pound or two and improved my health overall.

WOW you have done amazingly and it looks like you are going to continue on strongly. I like the stop eating after dinner but I have never been very successful at it. Still thinking on July…

Thanks @SummerSkier ! I enjoy the mid year reflection because it encourages me seeing my progress! I’m not in love with the fasting app I downloaded. Too much pressure to upgrade to premium. It’s nice for free, but not for $50 a year.

What would you like to be different in your life by December? To make that resolution happen, what will be your focus this July?

    Let’s start with sharing

    1. A fun thing you plan to do in July: Camping, Beach Days, Vacation, Big Fourth of July celebration?

July is not my FUN month. I have dentist/dr/car inspection and other chores to be done

    1. The habit you plan to focus on this month?

This month I am going to restart what I did in January very successfully. With this injury I find the scale sliding back up again and want to nip that in the bud so I am going to rededicate this month to using my TDEE tracker to see with the significant lower activity how I can do better. It is very simple. Weigh. Log. Be accurate for the 31 days.

    1. What’s your favorite thing about summer?

I used to love waterskiing. I think it is being able to sunbathe a little bit and get a small tan. (not the healthiest but one of my little faves/

    1. What’s your least favorite part of summer

Having to WATER everything constantly to keep it alive…

    1. Do you have a plan for dealing with the weather?

    Same as you. early riser!

dang that was a long fast!!!!!!

@SummerSkier ! I think your plan is a very good idea while you are recuperating. Is waterskiing what your user name references? How is it I never thought of that! 🤪 Perhaps it’s the result of emotional amnesia caused by the trauma of my only attempt at waterskiing. My brother had a boat, so we all waterskied. All except me. After being dragged behind the boat in repeated attempts to teach me, we all gave up. One of my many sport-related humiliations. 🙈🤣

I’ve demoted my yoga from the first thing in the morning. I need my cardio to be early in the morning, to beat the heat. Today I did my yoga outside to help with my outside hours. I swept a spot under my lemon tree that still had some morning deep shade, and set up my yoga mat. It was pleasant to be outside instead of the middle of the living room. The puppy was sweet hanging out with me while I did my routine… until I knocked an old dried up lemon off the tree. The puppy grabbed it and I had to chase her around the yard barefoot to get it away from her (she eats them and they are bad for her digestion).

    Living in the Fast(ing) Lane

July 1 - ⏳16.5 hours (very hungry). Celebrated by singing “I Will Survive!”

July 2 - ⏳16 hours (not as bad hunger today). I broke my fast with the most luscious peach ever. 🍑 Celebrated singing “Peaches.”

I’m liking my fasting app better today, since today it showed my progress, and that was very encouraging.

    1. A fun thing you plan to do in July: Camping, Beach Days, Vacation, Big Fourth of July celebration?
~ I plan to celebrate my younger grandson’s 22nd birthday, and spend quality time in the company of family and friends. I started yesterday by meeting up with DH’s brother and his wife for coffee before they jet off Stateside next week to visit their daughter, partner, and granddaughter.
    2. The habit you plan to focus on this month?
~ I plan to focus on flexibility in July
    3. What’s your favorite thing about summer?
~ I get to spend more time with my DH and family, as I’m on summer break from my volunteer groups.
    4. What’s your least favorite part of summer.
~ At the moment, the excessive heat. Our temperatures are approximately 10*C higher than normal.
    5. Do you have a plan for dealing with the weather?
~ I plan to stay out of the sun in the middle of the day, and drink lots of cool water to stay hydrated.

    July Plan of Action:
This July I am doing > 10 minutes flex as soon as I have been to the bathroom in the morning.
    Cue: reminder on phone.
    Celebration: Herbal tea.

I am having a good chuckle at you chasing the puppy around to get the dried lemon from it. Not only yoga this morning but cardio! 😳😂😍 @77terri I love the 'living in the fast lane' description. I won't tell you just how long it took me to learn to waterski but it was pretty ugly and involved a lot of being dragged. esp learning to slalom. but it became my fave. I think I would still do it but I gave up the shared boat and just started to find it too stressful dealing with the crowded lake and the whole outing thing. I think mostly because I could not find a reliable partner long term to trust or something.

@TerriRichardson112 sounds like you have a great plan for the month. Hope you can drop by more frequently. Do you have any greatchildren yet?

tday was a little frustrating as I got caught in a thunderstorm and could not "run" to my car which was pretty far away in the parking lot (leaving work). I ended up taking shelter with a few others in a covered sort of bus stop place they have with a bench. And somehow managed to change the experience to chatting a little with the others doing the same and enjoying the heavy rain and cool breeze it brought. while my hair frizzed away.

But on plan so far and deciding to "close the books" on the day with my post here.

My July plans to shed that last 5-6lbs so a more structured exercise plan and a weight comparison every 5 days that worked for me before.

To relax and have a great July as I turn 62 not so sure about that number but I can’t stop it…..

@SummerSkier No greatgrands yet. None of my 3 grands show much interest in settling down or having children.

I always plan to come in more frequently 😂 but real life often gets in the way. It should be easier now that my activity groups are off for the summer.

    Happy July!

    1. A fun thing you plan to do in July: Kayaking and a mini vacation to the beach or mountains.
    2. The habit you plan to focus on this month? Mindfulness - focusing on the positive. Long story short - My job duties are shifting and it’s a struggle; I need to change my attitude at work.
    3. What’s your favorite thing about summer? Long days and fresh produce.
    4. What’s your least favorite part of summer? Mosquitoes!
    5. Do you have a plan for dealing with the weather? Early morning walks and outside work/chores completed before noon.

My 3x a week strength training goal is spotty at best, so definitely needs a reset! 💪🏻

@TerriRichardson112 , I love your goal. Staying flexible is so important. And celebrating with herbal tea is lovely. I need to add in morning stretches.

Oh my , those temperatures sound terrible! I’m used to hot summers, but if it would be 10° more - yikes! 🥵 . I love your plans of enjoying the summer with family

@snowshoe072 , happy birthday! 5-6 pounds is quite a challenging goal, but you are a tough cookie, and can do it. I’m cheering you on!

@hcoleman232 , Staying positive in the face of stressful situations is difficult. Hopefully that kayaking will help provide a much needed reset. My daughters love to kayak. I’m with you on the mosquitoes 🦟 . We are ramping up our annual campaign against them.  Cheering you on for those strength training goals! 💪

Hello Everyone. I am excited to be here.

    Let’s start with sharing

    1. A fun thing you plan to do in July: Camping, Beach Days, Vacation, Big Fourth of July celebration? I guess swimming a lot.
    2. The habit you plan to focus on this month? Not really sure. Thought about sleep or veggies. Sleep is a tough one.
    3. What’s your favorite thing about summer? The water is warm for swimming.
    4. What’s your least favorite part of summer? Extreme heat and mosquitoes
    5. Do you have a plan for dealing with the weather? Yes, get up early and in early evening for outside activities. Swimming for exercise.

Please review our Newcomer’s Guide and our Nuts and Bolts of Habit Building as it will help you get started. Halfway through.

    Half year reflexion:

Morning monitoring (weight & blood pressure) 50-75%

    Morning water before coffee. 85%

Fun activities: (biking, walking, swimming, hula hoop dancing, etc.) 85%

My struggles: I think the tips in the Newcomer's Guide might can help me on these.

    1. Letting obligations get in the way of taking care of my needs.
    2. I usually can't decide on just one habit to work on.
    3. I lose track of time easily.

Sorry to be a bit wishy-washy. I will decide on my habit soon. I am excited to be here.

Welcome to the habit ninjas 🥷 @Learningmoments !  It sometimes takes me a few days to decide on the habit I want to work on, so take your time. Sleep is always a good one to work on. In fact, a fitness book I recently read suggests that’s where fitness starts. Eating lots of veggies is also a great habit. I love that you’re into swimming! Great way to stay fit and especially good for summer.

  • SummerSkier
    SummerSkier Posts: 5,741 Member

Welcome @Learningmoments I agree that sleep is a good one. I found that the past week or so for some reason I was getting up at 3 or 4 am and unable to go back to sleep. That was making me FALL asleep very (too) early in the evenings and creating a vicious cycle. But I am slowly coming out of that and managed to sleep until 6 today.

I think part of my trouble sleeping in the summer is that I try to baby my AC system and I probably need it cooler in the house than 75 or 76 to really sleep well.

I feel good about the first 3 days of the month and hopefully this long weekend I will stay on track. It's really tough for me to reduce but like @snowshoe072 it should be possible. I am excited to get a few weeks in on the TDEE tracker with the lower activity to see the data.

@SummerSkier , so true about warm temperatures affecting sleep. I always sleep better in the winter. It’s cooler and the nights are longer, so there’s less light. Good time for hibernation. However, a couple years back, we got an AC unit in our bedroom and solar panels - I’m sleeping a lot better in the summer now. The data collection step of the TDEE process is tough, but you definitely can do it. Three days down yay! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you so much for the support @77tes and @SummerSkier I really appreciate it. While deciding which habit to work on, I feel like I have been on a long road trip in my mind and asking, "Are we there yet?" Lol. I know I am probably overthinking it. That is what I do best. I finally came to the conclusion that I need to get real with myself. I have been under a lot of stress the last year and a half with family issues. I try not to let it bother me, but it does. So it is time to work on the stress.

I used the loop method in the Nuts and Bolts. I welcome any tips. Thank you.

My goal for this month (This month I will...")

I will work on OBSERVING the stressors and RECOGNIZING the reactions my body is showing.

The small actions I’ll be taking to accomplish this goal.

    Noticing my body's reaction (Triggers):

    • Shoulders in my ears
    • Heartburn
    • Nerves feel jumpy
    • Emotional
    • Numbing out on games

My action (response): Lower shoulders, good posture, and take 5 deep breaths. Journal what's happening at the time.

Monitor: Blood pressure, resting heart rate, stress management score, body responses, daily readiness score, sleep, calories in/out, weight.

Reward: The nervous system gets relief.

What help do you need from us? I just appreciate your support and any tips you may have for me. I tend to try to fix everything all at once. That is not working. In the past, I tried one habit at a time, but I usually sneak a bunch more in, and the simple turns very complex.

What does success look like to you at the end of the month? Hopefully, having fewer physical signs of stress and being more aware of habits that help decrease stress.

  • SummerSkier
    SummerSkier Posts: 5,741 Member

@Learningmoments what a super habit to try this month. I numb out on games a lot but I think from boredom and not stress. I agree that it's much better to focus on one thing if you can. I too am guilty of overdoing it and then failing.

@77tes the croissant sounds lovely and well deserved! Do you count coffee or water in your fast window also? I have considered putting an AC window unit in my bedroom not only for the cool but also for the white noise when my neighbor starts his loud music up and the thumping is coming thru the walls. But maybe one of these days. I am just afraid I would need to upgrade the electical on that side of the house to make it work.

It's been crazy rainy here. Not flooding near my neighborhood but it's like there is a rain storm overhead and it's not moving at all. All night long. A little thunder too. Or maybe those were fireworks? My digital rain gage say over 3 in of rain but I don't think it is reading accurately. I think more like 5 or 6 in the past few days. Anyway. TDEE tracker day 4 completed. Oddly it inspires me to be accurate with tracking more than a lot of other things. I don't want to mess the data up. 😳😂😳😂

My scale moved yesterday but decided it liked the previous number so went back to the old this morning let’s see what happens later in the week. Completed my spinning and trail walking may need to adapt as we have heat advisory for Sunday.

@Learningmoments , oh, I really like that goal! Stress so affects our health! Adding the stress triggers to your journaling will really help you notice patterns. Numbing out on games - me too. I actually gave up the game I was most addicted to for Lent. It actually helped me get rid of that thing.

@SummerSkier , I’m so glad to hear that you are safe from the floods! The reports are terrifying! I do drink water; in fact, my fasting app prompts me to drink 103 ounces of water per day and I drink about half of that is in the morning while fasting. And I also drink about 2 pots of coffee. ☕️

Bravo on 4 days tracking TDEE. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!

@snowshoe072 , Yay! For spinning and trail walking! All scales are liars, and sometimes they are mean too!

Observation is going well. My habits are pretty good. They just need cleaning up a bit. With the heat coming on hot and heavy, I need to find some new workouts. I thought about joining a gym, but I don't think I would want it for a whole year and they all seem to want a yearly fee or a commitment of a year. Tomorrow, I am going to try some new YouTube videos. I love YouTube!

@SummerSkier I think the window unit would help a lot. Most run off of 110 so your house should be able to handle it. If not, the store probably has a return policy. I have heard of cool mattress covers. I have never tried one, but it sounds interesting. I am glad you aren't affected by any flooding. I just looked up what TDEE. I didn't have time to really look at it. Could you tell us more? It says I need way more calories than I am getting. I love how you told me in the past that I have data, evaluate and tweak accordingly.

@snowshoe072 Great job completing your spinning and trail walking.

@77tes Thanks. I am enjoying it so far. The journal is helping too. Games can become very addictive even if they are healthy for our minds. I need to set a time limit and designate a special time for mine. I love all the music in your fasting. lol.

  • SummerSkier
    SummerSkier Posts: 5,741 Member

@77tes I meant to ask you what the purpose of your fasting is. Are you cutting calories to continue to drop a few? You are doing great! I think 16 hrs is a very reasonable window and I could probably do that also if I was allowed my coffee. 😂😳

@snowshoe072 that stupid scale. I have trouble with weekly weigh ins. I am either weighing daily or not at all at this stage because the fluctuations are really annoying and if you catch your weekly on a sodium or post hard workout flare up…🤬💪 Stay strong. Usually that makes me want to throw the baby out with the bathwater/

@Learningmoments using the TDEE tracker is probably not going to be a big eye opener for me with reduced exercise but if I could manage to use it long term very consistently it would show gradual trends from aging or changes in health, fitness, nutrition I think. Be careful with the initial data from the tracker as it really needs at least a few weeks before settling into a good data set. And you can set the weight loss to different amounts also.

Hoping Donna trinity will join us again. She is such a bright spot when I read her posts. (can't find her to tag here yet)

So 5 days tracker completed and on to Day 6.☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️ have to borrow the icon idea.

I really like my new habit. Especially having the long weekend with minimal stress. I was able to catch up on cleaning house and washing all the towels, and resetting the house. Through my observation habit, I see where I am not incorporating laughter as much as I like. This is an important part of my life. I can already see I am breathing more joy into my life. I am so glad I found this group.

@Learningmoments , I love how well it’s going for you. I second adding laughter. Humor is my superpower. Not that I’m that a great comedian, but that finding humor in frustrating moments really helps relieve stress. Getting the house tidied is also a great stress-reliever.

@SummerSkier , I’m hoping fasting will help me get to a better number on the scale without further restriction of calories. I really do NOT want to lose muscle mass. Also, all the health books I’ve read recently recommend it. So this month I’m going to give it the old college try.

Good for you keeping on with the TDEE tracking. I’m hoping @donna25trinity will join us too. Especially since she has lots of experience with fasting and was kind of my mentor last month.

Hi beautiful peeps, here for another month.. still trying to work out my goals...I'm thinking the cutting extra calories to allow for more calories on weekend was great on weekend but tough to stick to through the week... then wen i cldnt stick to lower calories its anothert thing to feel guilty about....so ill scrap that this month... I've had 3 pass days so far for July... so prob won't make the uac winners circle this month. Work got super hectic last week, I was finishing up a role to take on higher duties so lots of late nights working and late night snacking to keep me awake.. then there was hubby bday.. another excuse to eat like crazy he he.. I'll hve a bit more of a think on July and will be back tomorrow to catch up on reading all ur posts and goals for July. Xo

Lots of great goals/ habits this month. Keep up the good work! 👏🏻👏🏻

The 3 day weekend was wonderful! And a much needed break from work to focus on my mental health.

Total fail being positive on Thursday. I was emotional and angry all day; this was a carryover from Wednesday. 😔 New week, new attitude! Positive day today! Hopefully I’m on a roll.

Awesome introduction @77tes U really made me reflect on last 6 months and where to moving forward ..

What would you like to be different in your life by December? Be at goal weight , not use food to get me thru stress, feel healthy & happy, better time management,   work life balance. To make that resolution happen, what will be your focus this July?

No Procrastinating at home and work, do chores thru the week and 1 extra big chore , Get all my personal appointments booked in, no late nights at work, Manage stress  not  sure how to do this one yet, Weigh food, Weigh myself, Track, stay in calorie limit, Exercise, Acv, Vitimans, ,Coconut oil, Water, Fibre, Slow eating, Aim for winner or champ for uac, more friut/ veggies

    Let’s start with sharing

    • A fun thing you plan to do in July? I'm going on a drive this weekend to see my sister... it's nice to catch up with her and might arrange to meet up at a kid friendly venue so my little 1 can hve some fun too!

    • The habit you plan to focus on this month?

I am doing a number of the above habits atm but I can be forgetful so find a check list helpful, the habits I dnt have embedded are:

No Procrastinating at home and work, do chores thru the week and 1 extra big chore , Get all my appointments booked in: Dr me, Dentist son; , no late nights at work, Manage stress  not  sure how to do this one yet, Weigh food, Weigh myself, Track, stay in calorie limit,   Acv, Coconut oil,  Fibre, Slow eating, Aim for winner or champ for uac, more friut/ veggies

    • What’s your favorite thing about summer? It's winter here, but I love beach swims..we live walking distance to beach

    • What’s your least favorite part of summer  no air con in my car

    • Do you have a plan for dealing with the weather? It's winter here I rug up and go for a walk in the cold at 6am... if u rug up enough i can handle it.. I alwats get super proud in winter wen I head out for ny walk cos I hate the cold but I still brave it. Xo
