I'm Valerie, I am 31 with two small children. I have recently had Thyroid removal surgery and was advised by my doctor to consider weight loss surgery. I just started my pre-op journey. I am hoping to have the surgery in late September early October.

I am currently in search of a support group and friends because none of my family or friends support my decision to have weight loss surgery. It has been tough going through all this excitement alone.1 -

I started my weight loss journey back in June of 2016 by attending a WLS seminar held at my local medical center. Soon after, I saw my doctor and received the referral to go my weight loss specialists/surgeon's office. After my first appointment I began my six months of nutrition and education classes, as required by my insurance. In September of 2016 I had a sleep study done and was put on a CPAP machine, as I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. In January of 2017 I completed my nutrition and education classes, and in March of 2017 I completed and passed my psychological evaluation. Also in March I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and put on Levothyroxin. At the end of April 2017 I will be meeting with my surgeon to go over everything and schedule my WLS.
I am excited, but also nervous and anxious about the surgery and my life after. I'm thankful that I get this opportunity and I'm not going to let it go to waste.5 -

That is very inspiring. My beginning weight and height is similar to yours and losing so much weight is overwhelming. I am still working on getting off the initial weight loss before they will schedule my bypass.3 -

I don't really have a "goal weight". As long as I'm healthy and happy that's what's important to me. When I started this process I thought if I could just get under 300 pounds that would be a miracle! I'd been over 300 since 2009. And since I started tracking my weight in 2002 I never got below 270. On one of the visits with my surgeon he mentioned my "ideal weight" should be around 220. So I'd like to stay around that weight for the indefinite future.
For anyone who is pre-op reading this I HIGHLY RECOMMEND bariatric surgery. Chances are, this is the best (and maybe only) way you'll be able to significantly improve your health. I was diabetic and on 7 medications for various cronic conditions. I'm off all meds now. My health/life has improved in SO MANY ways I don't have enough time to list them all.
And for anyone who is post-op that may be struggling a bit... keep at it. Weight seems to be a major driving force for this community. When you get frustrated with the scale don't forget about all the other aspects of your life that have improved. That number you see when you look down is only one health measure. And really, it's not particularly a good one. If you are struggling to maintain/lose weight look more at WHAT you're eating instead of calories. I peak at food diaries sometimes and I see lots of candy bars and fast food. Not to mention all the processed "bars" and "shakes". After a few months I probably never ate less than 1,500 calories and now eat 2,000-3,000 a day. I never feel deprived. But I don't eat much added sugars or refined carbohydrates. Occasionally I'll treat myself. I don't have any "off-lmits" foods.
Overall, I'm really happy that I pursued weight loss surgery. It has been a great tool in my quest to improve my health. I plan on continuing to use it the rest of my life.

I'm looking forward to seeing the scale drop and - for me this is the most important part - the pain in my back, feet, and legs to stop. I'm nervous because I don't know what to expect and I know from watching my friend go through this, eventually guys are going to start noticing me and I don't quite know how to handle that. I'm thinking it's creepy because I'm the same person I've always been...just gonna be more streamlined and healthier. My fiance and I have talked about this and he only cares that I stay who I am because he loves me either way.

Some history:
Back in 2010 I had decided to have surgery through my provincial plan. There is a three year waiting list. Over the next 6 months after signing up, I lost 60 pounds. When they called for the first official meeting -- I cancelled out of the program as I thought I had it beat. (Oh the lies we tell ourselves.) A three month stall, a bum knee and I slowly started regaining but another 30.
I was reluctant to have surgery back then -- I felt like it was admitting I was a failure at this aspect of my life. I researched Mexico in 2014 but felt too nervous to trust such an important decision to a company I could not properly vet so I dropped it.
Of course during these years I was constantly trying and failing, succeeding a little, then failing again... another 10 pounds crept on in 2016 as I literally moved so little. I could barely fit behind the wheel of my van. The heaviness was finally starting to affect who I was. I read an article shared by Dr Sharma here in Canada about loss and regain in Obese patients who did not have surgery. I knew then (finally) I wasn't going to achieve loss long term without help. (Looking in the mirror was not enough!) So I saw my Doctor and once again got on the provincial waiting list (2-3 years.) My Doctor asked me in that appointment if I'd ever thought about Mexico. A short two weeks later, my friend who was similarly obese came to me to say she was booking surgery in Mexico and did I want to as well. I did my research and booked it. 6 weeks later I was sleeved.
I still have a long way to go. But I feel the possibility and hope for that continued loss. To be pain free is the biggest gift this surgery has given me. I have a lap my children can sit on. I can walk up stairs. I can roll over in bed. I can take care of myself better from a hygiene perspective. I feel hope.
