April chat

Wow, April already. March flew past for me. Had my hip replaced on March 4th and the rest of the month is a blur. As my pals know, I did great with the surgery and PT. I am still having PT for a few more weeks. Walking mostly without the cane, but once in awhile, I do need it. Esp after getting up from sitting for too long.

Well, I am bad and started this month out terrible already. Ate a full can of Pillsbury Cinnamon rolls. Baked of course!, not right out of the can. Oh well. life goes on, so does the month...................April Fools! Just joking. I ate 1 with my coffee this morning. lol

I have to really focus this month and start eating better. Have not been able to exercise for at least 2 months. The month before surgery the pain was unbearable and I could not even ride the stationary bike. Then of course no exercise until the Doc releases me. I see him on the 18th and am hoping he says I can go back to my elliptical and bike. I have had a few walks outside with my walker, so I guess I have had some exercise.

Have a wonderful, losing month you all!

    Time flies, doesn't it??

I think your hip replacement ordeal earned you the right to eat ONE cinnamon roll!!!

Hang in there with your recovery and PT.

    You can do it!

    New month and new goals...

Signed-up for 300 miles in the April Challenge -- with the heat moving in (Phx) and life getting in the way of exercising, it's really gonna be a challenge!

After meeting my goal last fall, I've regained 8-10# over the Holidays that I haven't be able to loose. Due to eating back exercise calories, I show being under goal most days and while I'm not gaining; I'm still not loosing. :grumble: Needless to say, I'm either under counting my calories or over counting my exercise burn.

The April plan is to not eat back more than 1/4 of exercise calories and stay away from fast food.

So happy you've come through the surgery and PT and the only new roll on you is a cinnamon one....not flab! You'll be back to exercise before you know it. Hang in there!

Californiagirl, I'm sure you are doing great at keeping those calories under control because you always do.

Woken3, youse do those 300 miles because you want too. Good luck and keep us posted.

No exercise on my end for awhile just because of laziness. I did manage to get control of my calories this week and all is good....I'm still playing the game of 2 calories up and 2calories down, so no change there. It is probably because my calories very so widely and I need more consistency in calorie intake. It could also be that my body wants to maintain this weight and I should accept it. We'll see.

Happy April everyone. Keep on the journey and we'll all get there at our own pace.

I am a little ANNOYED at being stuck.

I can't eat any less food, and I can't exercise if I don't eat enough food, you know?
Yes, I know I'm not exercising enough but I'm FAT, for crying out loud.

It isn't EASY to move this much blubber. If it were EASY I WOULD BE SKINNY.

     :grumble:

*whew* I feel better now, thanks.

((((((((((Cris))))))))))))) oh, girl I feel your pain!

It took me over a month to go from moving this 100+ pound overweight obese body to get from half dying after a 8 minute walk at 2mph to a 30 minute walk at 3 mph. Plus another 15 minutes of sitting and sweating buckets.

I am losing pounds, but don't really notice much change. I think I've lost most of it in my ankles and hands, I swear. Well, except there's all these oh-so-attractive stretch marks showing up on my santa claus belly (hohoho)

I finally opened my diary, and my meal plans are so boring as to be pitiful. I try to underestimate exercise burn, and eat between 1200 and 1300 calories a day (with some days that aren't so good). One of the things I really watch is sodium intake; I don't need any extra water weight. I DO eat pretty much nonstop from lunch until about 7:00pm though

It's good that you're annoyed, kinda. Hopefully you'll figure out what to change (maybe eating more??) and it will all fall into place. I KNOW you aren't giving up!

What you should really be annoyed at is that the next vacation you take will require all new clothes (again) since everything you own will be too big for you :flowerforyou:

Hang in there, chicky poo. Every pound loss is worth two - for the pound you did NOT gain.

    Thanks for understanding!

I am in AWE of you sticking to your plan.
My menu is boring too. If I didn't have a husband to feed, it would probably be even MORE boring.

But. That's the ONLY thing that works. Being type2 diabetic really limits my choices.
I only eat "real" food. I don't use "diet" products, no diet salad dressings, no low fat cream cheese or mayo.
I use the real thing when I use it at all.

I try to include a lot of veggies in my diet too.
How long have I bet at this..? I recently started eating salad for lunch.
And I have SUBSTANTIALLY cut back on things like rice or pasta and potatoes--and I had already reduced my portions of those things.
And last night when I went to bed, I WAS HUNGRY; I had a low-blood sugar headache.

I have to be careful with the veggies though. Ahem. I think, because of the medications I'm on, a nice big salad with lots of fresh veggies can have gastro-intestinal repercussions the next day.

Also. (I hope this isn't indelicate)
I weighed myself this morning when I first got up.
Then I had breakfast and exercised and along the way, went to the restroom about 3 times.
I weighed myself again before I got in the shower and...

I weighed a pound less than I had when I got up.

So. Some of the "weight" that shows up or varies from day to day may be.. waste, not fat.

    I'm just saying.

Although my oldest brother died from diabetes complications (he was a BIG man - probably 600 pounds and never, ever tried to control his eating or his diabetes) so far I'm not facing that. I *have* learned on MFP that just about the only two things that don't have carbs are water and air :ohwell: It just does NOT SEEM RIGHT that things that are supposed to be so healthy (fruit and vegs) can do bad things!

@Cris&ker. I love, love the sense of humor you both show. That is good in life and in this fight against the blubber! It is so hard to exercise when we are overweight and have health problems. When I first started 2 1/2 years ago, I could hardly make it to the end of my block (which is very short). I would be out of breath and hurting like heck. But...I increased that each week with another block and another. After awhile, I was walking a mile. I know that does not seem like much to some, but for me, it was amazing. I did that walk at least 5x a week and when my leg started giving me trouble, I had to quit and I admit, I really miss it! I can not wait for clearance from the Doc to get back on my elliptical/stationary bike! CRAZY to hear me say that, but once you get a routine, it does stick with you. So, I just say to you both, start out slow, do easy exercise and increase as you can.

And talk about boring diaries. Oh my. And I still eat junk. I refused to give up anything when I started out and I found as long as I cut way back, I could still have goodies and still lose.

WE can and WILL get to goal!

I KNOW!!! I was flabbergasted when my totals for the day showed, a couple of times, that I had eaten "too much" protein.

 HELLO? And that was from having low fat Greek Yogurt. Give me a break!

californiaglr: GOOD for you for sticking with it.
I know I have made small improvements. I can feel the difference in my thighs (which, by the way, look like they belong on an Olympic Speed Skater) from all the stationary biking.

It's hard enough that so many things make getting old tough, but keeping minimally FIT is a LOT harder than I ever thought it would be.

    Oh well. Go US.

And now it's time for lunch.

    ZZZZZZ  :drinker:

Sometimes I think MFP's totals are the things that are 'full of it!'
I have no idea how they come up with some of the numbers, which seem to vary from person to person.
I keep deleting categories...for instance, Sugar. With the amount of fruit and veggies I eat, I'd be over before lunchtime!
Obviously, Chris, you have to count ALL sugars, but as long as my total calories are OK, I don't need such controls...
    Thoughts?

    I agree.I'm only counting calories.

I am taking most of MFP's numbers with a (no pun intended) grain of salt.

As I've said before, I have been monitoring my food and controlling my portions for YEARS.
So, I just try to be logical about what I eat. Sugars? fergetaboudit...

I rely on fruit as my snacks. So, I ignore whatever "sugars" they have.
    Seriously, moderation is the key.

But I have to EAT REAL FOOD.

I deleted the sugar count on my account too - it was discouraging when I would see what fruit did! I will admit that I go over MFP's recommended protein regularly, but the medical folks say a 'high protein' diet is .73 grams per pound of body weight. Even when I'm over MFP allowance, I'm still considerably under that.

Although I tend to eat 'real' food for my main meals, occasionally I splurge. Two days of (lean) hot dogs this week tasted wonderful, but caused my body to rebel (no details provided deliberately :noway: ) The problem was I had started to grow feathers and cluck from so much chicken. Back to chicken for dinner though - (picture image of chicken dance here)

    HAHAHA!

I know what you mean about the chicken. *bbbbbBBcawwwWWWK!*

Fortunately we like fish; so I keep (fresh frozen) tilapia and salmon around. And we eat red meat at least once a week, or the Mister would rebel. I just eat a tiny bit.

And I have a repetoire of vegetarian dishes too, so... we do ok. Still. There are days when I would LOVE to just dive into a big mound of gooey macaroni and cheese.

Or! At least I THINK I would like it. Usually those things seem too rich for me now (who woulda thunk) and I don't enjoy them as much as I'd imagined.

It's so hard to find the right balance that works for you when losing weight. Personally, I changed the settings in MFP and eat about 50% carbs with 25% on both protein and fat. I find that is a balance that works well for me as far as loss and is a healthy balance according to many programs. The nurse in me has to say this so forgive me because I am not an expert in terms of amount that I have lost. PLEASE be careful about going too low on your calories, especially if you are diabetic. For one thing, your body will flip into starvation mode and stop losing and probably will not start losing until you increase your calories. Going too low is also dangerous for people on diabetic medications because it can so easily drop your blood sugar. My bf is an insulin dependent diabetic and I tell him the reason he keeps me is because once he found a nurse to balance his meals for him, he found a whole new world! When it comes to weight loss and diabetics, slow and steady really wins the race!

In case I haven't told you all: I love your attitudes!! It is so great to get to know you.

Well, my confession - I am having a "love affair" with a spoon and a jar of creamy peanut butter! Oh, how so good it is - but oh, how bad it is.
I had one of my secret rendezvous last nigh - of course late after hubby was in bed.
Consequently, my weight was up (well duh) and my stomach is really speaking this morning & again (well duh!!)
    I must be a very s l o w learner.

I do believe portion control is one of the answers for me - I had two brothers that were big eaters & of course I followed suit. But they also had the most beautiful auburn hair and I had mousy brown so how good is all of this info for me at age 68 !!:noway:

I need to get busy so hope each of you have a great Fri. "see you later"

    Well said!

It's a tightrope for me. It's boring, so I'll spare you the details, but...let's just say I am jealous of non-diabetics who don't have to deal with blood sugar issues. For us, (even type2) it's about CHEMISTRY, not just 'food'.

    Ugh.

    re: Peanut butter....

that is one of my favorite snacks. I put a spoonful on half an apple or some banana...
sometimes I put 5-6 semi-sweet chocolate chips in a spoon full of peanut butter and pretend it's a peanut butter cup.

But a half jar does not work!! Yea, I did just that last night. And with each spoonful I declared that would be all - Of course I also thought about what I was doing to my new lifestyle of eating as I was eating each spoon full
See, you all, that is the big wide stripe of rebellion I have been telling you about!!

Love our group chat here I love humor - even bad jokes! Cinnamon roll dough has never appealed to me - even though I can eat frozen cool whip, cookie dough, brownie dough etc. I think it is the sugar I am after all I must confess that I love peanut butter, and cannot stick with a serving so it is off-limits, as are donuts, cookies and anything else I find that I will overeat. I am old enough to know better that if I say I can have one that is the last word I hear, but my actions are another thing No self control.

I do want to share that I have turned a corner because I am NOT losing weight, I am trying my best though. I heard the little voice in my head say that this is the place I have to get to, where it does not matter. I forge ahead and no matter how many calories I burn or what the scale says, if I keep making the right choices to not overeat and to exercise more, it will come off. I don't usually carry on so long like this. So thanks for reading this :) Feel free to friend me if you want to give and get support.

Calling it an early night - one of those absolutely NO energy days. Wish I could blame it on lack of food, but that wouldn't be the case!

OK, I admit it...I color my hair. I notice from the pictures here that some of you have lovely silver or white hair, but I'm not ready.
Even at 73, I don't feel like going gray, and my family grays prematurely, so I have been coloring it since I was in my late 20's. I was naturally a strawberry blond, but that it a hard color to keep without looking orangey, so over the years, I have transitioned into a LIght "Natural" Blond by L'Oreal, and think it suits me. Clyde calls me his 'blond chicky-babe'!
I had quite a scare this morning, after doing my Zumba DVD.
I started to mix the Excellence crème, and the color in the tube was a medium brown, not white, as it always is. Luckily, I had a couple more boxes (CVS had a buy one, get one free promotion.) so I opened another one, and the color is fine. I'll call L'Oreal tomorrow and let them know. It's a good thing that I've been using this shade for years so I knew what to expect, otherwise your friend might be a brunette....or bald!
I promise to talk about food, exercise, or something more apropos next time, but this is a Chat topic...

Hey Bobbie, I think part of my journey is accepting me and appreciate your sharing along the same lines. It is not all about weight for me. Something is eating me lately Looking in the mirror and learning to accept that I am in an accelerated aging process. Starting to not look like me. I am losing my youthful look. Anyways, what I do about it is find a way to feel better and make the most of what I got.

That said, I recently got my hair colored in a salon, as I usually do it myself, and she tried a new gray coverage. It looked purple on the roots for the first time -- and so help me, I talked myself down from the ceiling, hoping and praying it would be okay. She was praying too!

The rinse out was fine and so far I have a couple more weeks to go before going back to her for highlights. It looks ok this new ash colored roots. Good camouflage I say.

Really why do I have a problem with aging? Seems like a conspiracy to get me going to the drugstore. Can't even read MORE or Health mags without noticing all the ads for putting on my face. Did your Mom every say that? I AM turning into my Mom, in some ways.

I don't have a problem with using make up, face moisturizers, wrinkle-cremes, you name-it, if it makes me feel better about aging. So I figure hair dye is along the same lines. A couple of my gracefully aging over 70 year old girlfriends got tatooed -- one did her eyeliner, and the other who eyebrows.

They inspired me that at any age, you can continue to care about how you look and feel. Have confidence! It is so much more attractive to enjoy yourself! Let's Wear Purple Hair!!! Forget the Red Hat - Wear Red Hair!! That's my story thanks for putting up with me and I am sticking with it! Feel free to borrow it any time :)

I could message you directly, but figure some of our other friends here might enjoy reading these posts (let me/us know if you don't).
I mentioned on my home page that my sister died a couple of years ago. We used to email every day, and talk on the phone all the time. She was 10 years older than I, and I would see her every year when I visited her in Florida.
I used to say: "Hmm, 50 isn't so bad," when I was 40, "60 isn't so bad", when I was 50, etc., etc.
The last time I saw her, she was 81. I had always had better skin, because she loved to tan before they knew the dangers, and I am fair skinned and stayed out of the sun. I never had a wrinkle until I was around 60, thanks to our mom who had beautiful skin. (We lost her at age 57 to breast cancer, which partially explains why my sister, and only sibling, and I were so close.)
One day, I was in the back seat of a car touring homes for sale with my real estate associates, and I saw an old neck in the rear view mirror...It was mine! When did that happen?
What bothers me most now is the thin skin on my arms. Lifting weights doesn't do anything about the old-looking skin when I lift my arms, and sleeveless clothes are a thing of the past.
I, too, try the magic new anti-aging serums and moisturizers, even though I'd never fall for a "magic" weight loss product (Eat all you want, sit on your rear, and lose 50 pounds by next Tuesday!)
The saving grace is that Clyde thinks I'm beautiful and tells me often, even at the breakfast table in a robe and no makeup! Nonetheless, I'm not giving up, and plan to look as good as I can, while we grow old(er) gracefully together!
