Jean & Wooken3 Many thanks for the techie advise. - most helpful

Jean very kind & brave of you to visit your cousin & what a nice experience for you to find a lovely new cafe on what must have been a sad-type day. Your outing to London sounds delightful & I agree with Smiles, pls may I be 2nd in line to borrow your son!

Reba. Take care tomorrow, my thoughts are with you. Oh, how has been the rainfall for your crops? We had a little rain the other day &I wished it your way.

Smiles I can't imagine your situation with respect to your Dad's dementia and do believe one must follow what one believes is best for ourselves so that we can be well & therefore strong for all our loved ones. How lovely you have a son! Have a good day on Thursday.

I am on the road again tomorrow as I promised to go out with my best girlfriend and help her look for a new car. She lives about a 45 minute drive away but it should be a fun day. She is still working so she has taken the day off. It will be a challenge for me though as she is taking me out for lunch so keep your fingers crossed for me as I try to eat "smart" and healthy

Enjoy your day everyone! Cheers, Marian

My son is indeed the light of my life, partly because he is just a lovely guy...but has his faults too......but minor ones, like ordering my Mother's Day flowers and accidentally having them sent to his own flat.....so he sent me a photo of his girlfriend holding them to show me how lovely they were lol:flowerforyou: But also I love him to bits even more because we lost his sister to heart disease when she was 17.....so you can imagine my feelings for him! He is thoughtful and kind but, as it should be, independent and leads his own life working and living down in London....... I will tell him he has a list of surrogate Mums...lol:bigsmile:

Nearing the end of April and I feel strong, committed and less without a clue as to how to make my body lose fat. An active lifestyle and high protein / low carb 1200 calorie diet is the formula, which means 2 hours at the gym to get my metabolism up. Since I have a high percentage of body fat unless I move more, I will not burn much at rest. For May, we will move and I am packing and cleaning up getting ready to go. Looking forward to the changes in lifestyle in warmer weather! YAY! Getting rid of freezer food like those buffalo bites which are high calorie are going to be my cheat meal this weekend. Have fun this weekend you all! Stay the course with low cals and high activity.

I just joined the group yesterday, but have been on MFP since mid-January. April has and is a big month for me. I suddenly had fast growing cataracts that I really had to have taken care of. Had the first one removed last week. What a breeze and I can see better than I have ever before. That eye was 20/850 without contacts. I've had glasses since I was 5 years old. Other eye will be done this Tuesday! I need to renew my drivers license this month so it will just be in the nick of time since doctor had said I wouldn't pass.

I also have a birthday on Sunday. I'll turn 63.

I've lost 35.5 pounds since joining MFP (I had lost about 8 pounds before that from my high of 238). I contribute what success I've had so far to my MFP friends. I try to keep right around my 1200 calories goal. I have really taken to exercising and do it 6 times a week. 20 minute or more fast walk and 30 minutes on stationary bike. I do walk quite a bit at work, too. Today I walked 18,350 steps of which 4,567 were my cardio walking workout. Although that was unusually high, I still usually hit over 10,000 total.

I'm am divorced and love being single although my ex and I are good friends (we were married 16 years and have been divorced now for 25 years) and we still do everything as a family together. I have two kids, one daughter-in-law and two young granddaughters. I'm still working full-time and think I'll continue for 4 or 5 more years.

I have had serious heart problems that was part of the reason I gained so much weight very quickly several years ago, along with having RA. In 2007, I was only given a 1 in 3 chance to survive 5 years. But then three years ago I got a pacemaker/CRT/defibrillator implanted and the CRT has really allowed my heart function to improve. My RA right now is also in remission. I am finally at a point where I can work out without pain and without feeling like my heart would explode.

Look forward to reading all your posts.

Charlie (really Charlene but no one calls me that anymore).

Just a quickie........had a lovely day in London yesterday - nice meal and yes...I had a dessert.....and then a walk down to the river to go up our new tallest building The Shard.... weather wasn't great so the views were a bit limited but it was still fabulous....today hoping to spend a couple of hours in the National Gallery looking at the French Impressionists work and then Martin will be off to football and I will be shopping around Covent Garden and Oxford Street - might buy some new running shoes...bright orange maybe.....rebel rebel!

    Have a great weekend!

Just discovered this group yesterday and so I am jumping in to this thread, with apologies that I haven't read all of it.

I'm so pleased that I discovered MFP. I have been logging my food and exercise and am now exploring the rest of the site a bit, which is how I arrived here.

I ordered some new bathroom scales which arrived yesterday. They are solar powered bathroom scales which tell me this morning that I am 3lbs heavier than I was led to believe by my older 'dial and needle' scales. Yikes. More determined now to get to a normal BMI which means around 10lbs to lose.

My motivation has come from feeling unwell in March with a gallbladder issue. Very painful. Now feeling much better on a low fat diet which was much needed due to my high cholesterol.

I've never been into dieting or fitness (silly me). I've invested in a turbo trainer for my bike which is set up in the dining room so I will use it.

Sorry, I've rambled about the wrong stuff in this Chat Thread but will get the hang of it before long, I hope!

Weather forecast for the end of the coming week here in the UK is for WARM weather. Great!

    Happy days all.
  • Welcome to all the newer newbies. I have just been here foe a couple of weeks now. As fR as being techie I have to be one of the worst. I can so relate to anyone who has problems. Aand the kicker is that I am married to an IT guy who just doesn't understand my lack of computer savy. I also relate to everyone's struggles. Trying to get a walk in when your knees are sore and trying to get more liquid has been a problem for me but I'll get there. I have to thank everyone here who is always so supportive. Anyone who would like to is welcome to add me to their friend list. I'm heading out to visit my 92 year old mother and take her out for breakfast and groceries. Believe it or not she still lives on her own and manages most things very well. Talk to everyone later. Joyce

OK, Jean, the real rebel is here!! And I did rebel Thursday night by finding a spoon and a jar of peanut butter - and yep, the scales showed that I am a rebel!!

Hi and welcome to Joyce, Sandi and Charlie! So glad to have you here!!

Jean please tell us more about London as this is the only way I will ever see it... but sounds as if you are having a great time! Good for you!!

Well, Kansas is blessed with WIND - can you believe it LOL

I will walk with Leslie and one of her DVDs today!

    Happy Saturday to everyone!

Welcome Charlie! Gosh you have really been the Comeback Kid! Good for you!! Your progress is an inspiration to me. Sorry for all that you have had to go through. I am so glad for you that your eyes are better. I am supposed to take my driver's license this year and scared me a bit. Not because of my eyes, but taking the quiz. I will study and probably do fine. Just feel like a teenager suddenly about the drivers' test :embarassed:

My progress to report is that I had the energy to push myself at the gym today. I walked faster than I ever have, which was at 3.6 mph, and for longer than usual too - 60 minute. I know if I would just keep this push up every day and keep my calories within my deficit range, I will lose my 30# of fat by Christmas. Hope so.

Fun times in London, you rebel you -Jean!

Sandie - anything goes on the chat I think :) Painful gallbladder stuff, sorry. Hey what is a turbo trainer for a bike? I might want one cuz I liked spinning class so much.

Love your kindness to your Mom, Joyce - you are a saint! I like Arizona Diet Blueberry Tea - have you tried that?

Rebamae, did you walk yet? I am so addicted to peanut butter and I know it is good for you for protein and all, but not too much. I don't think you have to give it up, just eat it earlier in the day and then eat less calories overall. For me, I will not test myself and stick to measuring out the one serving of peanut butter for my apple slices, or on a peanut butter sandwich.

Happy Weekend, thanks for being here!

Hi everyone.....back home from London after a lovely weekend. Drove down on Thursday with hubby to stay in a hotel just North of London....managed to go out for a quick mile run before driving into London and going for a Thai meal with David ( son). Had a glass of wine and pork and rice meal ...no dessert. Did over my 10,000steps despite three hours in the car.

David was going away for the weekend on Friday so we were then staying in his little London flat.....we left the car outside his flat and spent the day using the Tube and walking. Meal out at lunchtime was paid for ...was a cocktail, chicken , sausage and salad and a bakewell tart dessert and a glass of wine.We then walked quite a way down to the River Thames and completed our Christmas Treat Gift by going up London's latest attraction, the tallest building, The Shard.....weather could have been better but we really enjoyed it, including seeing the guys cleaning the windows 70 floors up, hanging and swinging from harnesses!!! Yikes! Scary! I had the best ever visit to a loo (bathroom, restroom..) up there on the 68th floor...the whole wall of the cubicle was a window!!!! Luckily...no window cleaners there! Again walking clocked up more than 11,000 steps and I just had a snack..toast and peanut butter and another glass of wine in the evening.

Saturday I walked over 14,000 steps ... nothing quite like exploring a city for clocking up those steps. We went to the National Gallery in the morning and it was wonderful. I had never been before.....we saw two of Van Gogh's Sunflowers and then lots of other Van Gogh, Picasso, Renoir, Monet, Degas, Cezanne, Constable, Turner......my favourite period has always been the late 1800s to early 1900s so the impressionists really do delight me. From there we walked up to Covent Garden area...tourist restaurants and shops...a very "buzzing" area of London.....we had an Italian meal.....wine but no dessert...I guess you are realising where my priorities lie with the wine/dessert thing! lol Hubby went off to football match and I had the rest of the day to myself, buying bright orange rebel rebel trainers! And having a couple of free hand massages in stores where they were trying to persuade me to buy stuff.....I bought in the one I had intended buying in anyway.....hand and foot cream and essential oil.. a nice scenty treat! I had hot chocolate drink in Hotel Chocolat Cafe with white chocolate covered pretzels and then made my way back to the flat.....

.I really don't think I did too badly but the scales will tell in a couple of days....and it really doesn't matter! Life is for living and most of the time I am doing ok.....so a weekend away can be enjoyed!

I have another weekend away this coming Thursday though...but that doesn't count here as it will be May by then lol:bigsmile:

What a lovely weekend in London, Jean! I felt as though I was there.

Smilesback: This is the turbo trainer which I bought. I put my normal road bike on it (which I've hardly used due to balance/dizziness issues since I bought it) Thought I'd make use of it somehow. I've put it up at the back of our dining room (can easily take it out when people are round for a meal) If it's there ready to use then I'm more likely to do it.

I love that we can share other things in our lives besides the mfp stuff....... it is how we get to know each other ....... like Reba and her life on the farm...our lives are so varied but we meet here because of a common interest and then get to know each other.....:flowerforyou:

Jean - you are so right - sharing makes MFP a part of our life, not the only focus. We are more than our weight. I feel the same as Rebamae and Sandie - Does seem to me too that you have a lovely life going on! I could just imagine the bathroom with a view too -- uhhhh, I don't think so:laugh: I would still use it though! I can really imagine looking at the impressionists artwork and those hand massages are new to me - Sounds great! Go ORANGE!

Sandie - thanks, I didn't picture that! Good to use safety measures to avoid breaking a shoulder or arm from falling. I am a lot more careful even going downstairs since my MIL fell on her sweater that was dragging and broke her arm. Accidents happen in the home a lot.

Just checking in, I am hungry so I know I am losing weight - so will fill up on vegies and water today to get through it. Wish me luck!

OK Jean, you brought it up!!
The farm: we are having 40 miles wind gusts - just finished planting dry land corn (meaning no irrigation system) so DH is stewing that thousands of dollars of corn seed, fertilizer & etc is blowing away. Everything is blowing Not a happy day on the farm! Again, totally out of our control. Mother nature is larger than anything!!

    Enjoy your Sunday!!

Sorry RM, Mother Nature is hard on you in many ways. We live in a rural area in eastern WA. and see farmers work on rolling hills for lentils, grass, wheat and corn. We have high winds often here. Some farmers are converting apple orchards to grape vines. We don't need to irrigate either because of good rain and good water table. My husband's family farms in Illinois grow corn and soybeans. They have had worse years. My grandparents had apple orchards in eastern WA and provided midwifery. I got a tremendous a lot of respect for you.

    Smilesback - thanks!
We do have irrigation on some of our quarters, but had already planted the dry land as it needs to go in the ground sooner.

We grow wheat, corn, soybeans and milo. Some of the guys are trying canola but we haven't tried it yet.

DH is also a farmer seed salesman so we are going to have unhappy customers who will need to replant. DH hasn't said yet if we will replant - I am guessing we will.
    Wait and see!!

    Have a great evening!!

It sure has been a hectic w/e for me,

Smilesback hang in there with your hunger cravings, not to put anymore pressure on you but really looking forward to your Christmas pics, you can do this!

Jean, great update about London, thanks for sharing.

Charlie, when is your next eye surgery scheduled. Like you, I started wearing glasses very young & I had my cataracts removed abt 2 yrs ago. It is great, My vision was so poor that if I got up to go to the loo (see Jean I can speak British) I had to put my glasses on!

Sandie, glad to hear the diet change has helped your gall bladder issue. Very fortunately I have never experienced it but I understand it can be extremely painful. Glad you joined us!

Joyce, I am not that techie savvy either but got help from some of our 60 group & I think I am doing better? We have something else in common as I have a Mum who is 94 & lives with us & my Mum in Law will turn 92 in May & still lives by herself in her own house. Unfortunately her eyes are now at the point where she has decided to sell the house & move into a retirement residence. We are blessed that she made the decision herself! She is very practical.

I have been working on getting the house ready to list later this month so I am painting & trying to help her declutter. She has a 5 bedroom house but only 2 are used as bedrooms, the other 3 are for her hobbies! She was a great weaver so she has one room for her loom , etc, a room as an office cum sewing room & the other room is her plant room. She was quite the gardener. Her house is not that big but she does have a fully finished basement so that is why the number of bedrooms!

She lives about an half hour drive away so tomorrow I am up at her place to take her to pickup her new walker & then take her grocery shopping. If I have time I would also like to do a little more painting. My husband still works so he is getting pretty exhausted so I try to help with his Mum where I can. No. MIL stories as we get along very well,,,,thankfully!

RM. I am a city girl so I love hearing about your life, you are so resilient,,, I admire our framers so much & it really bothers me to see good farmland be developed for mega home developments.

Well Tuesday is my weekly weigh in day so I have to try and get my short walk in tomorrow,,, why do I hate walking so much:noway:

Have a great night & a wonderful Monday Everyone, :flowerforyou: Cheers. Marian

Had a wonderful day with my grandkids and kids at the zoo. Then we went out to dinner this evening. Was a wonderful birthday.

Marian: My eye surgery is Tuesday. Patch will be off on Wednesday and I hope to be able to renew license then. I don't have to take the exam, just the eye test. Like two weeks ago, I will let myself eat up to maintenance level tomorrow. Want to be strong for the surgery and I won't be able to eat until after it is done. Don't know what time yet, they will call tomorrow.

Reba: I'm sorry about the wind today. I hope all is not lost.

Jean: I have been to London a couple of times. Been to the National Gallery. My goal has been to go to all the great art museums of the world. Last time I was there was in 2010. I had such a difficult time walking through Hyde Park yet was proud of myself for being able to make it (with many stops). Now it would be a breeze!

Has been a great weekend. Because of the eye surgery, I don't have to be back to work until Thursday. Then I work Friday, then off on vacation for a week! Family is renting a cabin in the Smoky Mountains. I'm not going to go crazy on vacation, but I will let myself go higher than 1200 if I want. (So often, I don't want). I do need to get some new jeans. Mine are really way too big. (oh, what a terrible problem  ) I hate to shop, but what I got on-line just were cut oddly. Now I have to go, not enough time to shop on-line.

Hope everyone has a good week.

    YES, people, I AM back...

We just returned from a river cruise called Windmills and Tulips... Amsterdam to Belgium and back. It was FABULOUS...
And the food... it was delicious!!!

We actually got home on Friday, but I've been kind of busy (laundry) and jet-lagged. My fingers forgot how to type.

I did weigh myself Sunday morning.. *gulp* :noway:
However. The good news is: I've gone down 3 lbs as of this morning, so probably it was mostly water weight.

I'm figuring if I gained "real" weight, it was 1-2 pounds. We did a LOT of walking, so that helped. Also, the portions on these kinds of cruises are small. There are several courses but naturally one can make healthy choices. It can be challenging to say NO, because the breads were superb and the desserts...delicious.

I will confess that the day we were in Antwerp, it was noon, I was hungry and we weren't going to be back to the ship for lunch until 1:30pm. So. We had a snack. French Fries (A Belgium staple) and some chocolate (Hey we were in BELGIUM, ok?)

I'm going to get back into the loop and start logging food again today.

We had a wonderful trip; but there is NO place like HOME!

Charlie, I am sorry I missed your birthday!! But please know I hope it was a great one - sounds like you had a fabulous time with family!!

Cris, welcome back!! The trip sounds fantastic!! Oh to see the tulips in bloom would be heavenly to me! I love them!

Talking tulips - ours have survived the wind, but when I looked out this morning all of the petals are gone which means the deer had a midnight snack

Marian, it is wonderful that you and your MIL have such a wonderful relationship. Kudos to you for helping her so much!

My Grandmother was a very realistic person. She lived a lone for many many years. She lived in Oklahoma on the farm where my mother grew up. I remember when she got electricity but would always cook on the wood burning stove. One day she called my mother to tell her she was moving to town as she had found a room to rent. Then much later she called to say she was no longer going to drive. Then the call came where she had decided to move into the rest home. I am not kidding - she made all of these decisions herself! I pray I can be that way for my family.

I must go walk with Leslie before starting my Monday schedule - whatever that is!! LOL

    Talk later

WOW - I guess I missed a lot by not poking my head in here this weekend!

Happy Birthday to Charlie! What marvelous adventures & thanks for sharing to Jean and Cris! And for the rest of us, Reba, Smiles, Marian and others ... life is just INTERESTING, is it not?

Home again for a few days before heading up to the lake again later this week. We have guests for the upcoming weekend, and I just didn't have the gumption to clean out the winter dirt from the guest bedrooms/bath after my allergies(?) kicked in Saturday afternoon. I always fret about meals with guests - we have two ladies coming - one is on the Atkins diet, the other doesn't like spicy. Neither cares for most vegetables, etc. Rick tells me I worry too much, but hey, I'm my mother's daughter.

It was just confirmed that the hospital (my husband's primary client) will be having their annual picnic at our place May 31; we are really the only ones that have the room (we have 7 acres with frontage on a shallow lake). They take care of all the food, entertainment (including a water slide for the kids), set up (including porta potties), etc. But there will be 100 to 200 folks here, so I'll need to get my house in order because there will be people in and out of here all day. And we host an after picnic party, so must plan on sleeping arrangements for a handful of people :drinker:

I've been reading with interest your stores of aging relatives and moving. My mother is 95 and still living in her home on her own. But her health is failing, she is pretty much housebound now and relies on a walker, and is not doing well with either her food or medications. My middle brother and the widow of my oldest brother are doing a LOT for her, but they're wearing out - she lives almost an hour from my brother who does most of the chores and errands. Brother is going on vacation for the first time in years now that he is retired, so SIL has arranged for mom to go to an assisted care apartment for a month. Mom is NOT happy, and yet we all are hoping she enjoys it enough that she considers moving there permanently. I'll be heading up to Wisconsin to visit her the beginning of June - wherever she is.

    So... Happy Monday everyone!:flowerforyou:

Reporting out April results as I will be out-of-town for the rest of the week.

-- Loss 3 pounds and exceeded the biking goal. Yea Me! :drinker:
-- Stopped for fast food about half as often as I want to. :ohwell:
-- Joining the "Y" in May as it will be soon be too hot for biking here in Phoenix.

    Team Bike Steady
    April Total: 361.7 miles
    April Goal: 300
    % of Total: 120.6%

    New month and new goals...

Signed-up for 300 miles in the April Challenge -- with the heat moving in (Phx) and life getting in the way of exercising, it's really gonna be a challenge!

After meeting my goal last fall, I've regained 8-10# over the Holidays that I haven't be able to loose. Due to eating back exercise calories, I show being under goal most days and while I'm not gaining; I'm still not loosing. :grumble: Needless to say, I'm either under counting my calories or over counting my exercise burn.

The April plan is to not eat back more than 1/4 of exercise calories and stay away from fast food.

Welcome home Cris, sounded like a wonderful vacation, yummmmm Belgian chocolate, we missed your regular posts!

Wooken3 congrats on meeting your April goals, well done. Have a good week, where do you find all your great animations?

Short & sweet this am, as I am off to MIL for another day of painting (got some more patching before I can complete the bay window). Didn't get her out to pick up her new walker yesterday as she was a little tired after we went grocery shopping, to the pharmacist & then to the liquor store, yes, she still enjoys her sherry & her wine! :drinker: Unfortunately, all this painting doesn't seem to eat up my calories but maybe I am fitter:wink:

Oh, Ker: Thanks for sharing about your Mum, though I am sorry to hear about the struggle to help her decide on a safe environment for her. I recognize the drain it puts on all the family. Let's hope she meets some lovely other residents during her respite stay for the month and your brother enjoys a well-earned vacation!

    Have a good day everyone!

Hi, hoh, hi, hoh, it's off to work we go! :flowerforyou: Marian. (For some reason today I have a noise in my head, today, thus I am singing silly songs!)

Good morning! I'm still getting back on track with my sleep, time warp and food adjustments.
I haven't gotten back into exercising yet; I just felt so out of it I probably would have fallen off my stationary bike and hurt myself.

I did mean to get with it yesterday but a friend called and wanted me to come over for some FUN, so I dropped everything and went. Worth it!

I feel for you, Ker, trying to convince your mom to change her living situation.
There are 2 BIG issues with seniors on their own--besides the risk of injury.
One is something you already mentioned--keeping track of medications
The other is something we don't really think about, and that is isolation.

Older people who don't regularly interact with others get depressed and lonely without realizing it.

I hope your mom will enjoy her stay at the facility and be open to staying there.
It will probably prolong her life and she'll be happier; whether she wants to admit it or not.

My mom is 93 and finally, last fall, realized that she was not going to be able to remain in her cozy home, alone over another Wisconsin winter. She moved into a nice Assisted Living facility in Illinois, just minutes from my sister. Once she made the decision, she was happy with it and her only mild complaint so far has been about the blandness of the food. (She's always been a very good cook, and still has a discerning palate!)

It's eye-opening to see this with our parents and realize that someday we may be faced with the same kinds of decisions.

I guess I'd better go exercise to possibly help to postpone that day.

    Have a great day, everyone!

Thank you for the encouragement, Cris! My mother also hates bland food - she discontinued her meals on wheels for that very reason.

Having a 'blah' day here - allergies still have me down - I swear the only difference between taking the medicine and not is whether I can breathe. SOOOO sluggish. Haven't been very good about exercising for the past few days myself, but decided i'd give it one more day of 'recovery'. Need to be upbeat and full of energy this weekend :grumble:

Our minds can really mess with us. Fat days, skinny days - regardless of what the scale/clothes are telling us. Well, in my case it's usually skinny hours or minutes LOL Was doing better until I started online shopping for a new top to wear. GAWD, I'm so sick of shopping in the 'plus' stores  (muttering to self: consider it a motivator not discouragement. yah, right)

Trying to get some things done around the house while I wait on a phone call. Then it may be naptime. Dratted antihistamines  Enjoy your day, everyone!

Love the speedy bike! Glad you are all here and sharing. I really enjoy our group a lot! I get motivated reading how each of you fits in exercise during your day although you are busy with other stuff. It is very reinforcing of what I want to do in my life.

I feel discouraged but not giving up by a long shot! I have been here on MFP over 2.5 yrs and have not lost weight, but gained 15 lbs. I just don't seem to lose and I own up to it here that this is all in my control. I just have to eat smaller meals so that I don't feel hungry. Just thinking about cutting back on calories, freaks me. :noway:

Results for APRIL: 17 hours of cardio exercise at the gym + one more hour for tomorrow. So far no weight loss.

Goals for MAY: One hour walk every day. 2# weight loss.
