It looks good but the 1 1/2 Cups of the dark Amber Molasses is over 300 grams of sugar.0 -

grade b maple syrup you mean
you're going to be cutting the pumpkin into 8-16 slices (depending on size of gourd) so it's not as bad when you break it down.0 -

Ok! 16 slices into 318 grams is 20 grams. Honey-crisp apples have 17 or so. I see your point.0 -

Isn't this playing around with doughs kind of contrary to the paleo/primal spirit? My basic principles are:
- Whole foods, organically grown, simply prepared;
- Eat plants and animals, avoid grains and sugars, minimize roots.
Seems to me you're just trying to appear to eat healthily, yet keep your bad habits. Have your cake and eat it oo, so to speak...0 -

I feel this way as well. In general I don't want to fuss or obsess over food-just eat pure clean simple. That said, over the Holidays to keep myself "on plan" but have a "treat" I may try a pumpkin paleo pie or something like that. 90% of the time I prefer to eat foods as close to their natural state as possible.0 -
Hey not everything on my site is bad (check out the chicken stir fry & the cordon bleu). I'm all for eating whole foods, but it sure is fun to play in the kitchen!0

We had our first family birthday since starting Diet Evolution back in May (my step son). My wife decided she'd try one of these primal-friendly carrot cake recipes as a birthday cake. You know, one of those that use ten eggs and 3/4c of coconut flour.
It turned our rather well, actually.
I sat down after the kids had left and decided to figure out what the 'damages' were. Not only was it hella expensive compared to a standard carrot cake - but it had a LOT more calories as well (550 a piece vs 350 on her old recipe). On top of that, I had sneeked a second piece thinking that it was 'primal' and therefore relatively healthy - so I wound up eating 1100 calories of cake - and ingested 88g of sugars!
The tl;dr is: it cost twice as much as a regular carrot cake; was almost twice as caloric as a regular cake; and, since it was a 'baked good' I tripped and ate way too much of it (I've said elsewhere I tend to binge). I don't see where there was anything good about that cake, other than we kept true to our vow to not let grains back into our house. While it was technically 'primal' in that it used coconut flour and oil, maple syrup and dates instead of their nefarious counterparts, it had absolutely nothing to do with a hunter/gatherer diet - and everything to do with trying to perpetuate an old, SAD habit.
The missus is planning to do a 'primal' pecan pie for xgiving - my absolute favorite pie and a family fave as well. I'm not having any. It's not worth it.0 -
Thanks for pointing that out to me!! I will be sure to figure out the cals /carb/ sugar if i DO decide to go that route.
I actually am going to 2 Thanksgiving meals - one Thurs and one Fri. I think I am going to revel in the freedom of not making a thing out of the ordinary and just eating around everything- keeping gluten and sugar free. There will be plenty with turkey, sweet potatoes and salad/veggies.
If I do make a paleo pie, no one else will eat it anyway! So then I will have a whole giant pie which I (like you) will probably binge on!!!
Thanks for your words.0 -

Why is that? Pie is pie. If you're a good cook, and the filling is delicious, people are gonna eat it!0 -

As much as I don't want to, I'll have to agree with this. I couldn't figure out how 10 eggs and only 3/4c of coconut flour was going to produce a decently cakey cake - but it did. I was impressed with the ingenuity. I just wasn't impressed with the cost. calories or sugar.
If you don't tell anyone it's paleo - they'll scarf it and ask for seconds.0 -

I made a lot more of these type of primalized dishes in the beginning than I do now. But for the most part, my swaps have been pretty comparable calorie wise and more often better in sugars/ carbs, it makes me curious to see the recipe you used. But price, not so much! The longer I do this, the further away from my SAD past I go, the less I want things like this. And when I do, I can have small portions and walk away from the rest.0 -

My pictues are so big you can only see half of the dish. My sister claims the sheppard's pie looks like vomit but it sure was good. >.<0

Granolagrl, what shepard's pie recipe did you use? i've stumbled across several all with mashed cauliflower on the top. I've yet to make a mashed cauliflower that lived up to it's "mashed potato substitute" name. Perhaps I'm doing it wrong?0
