This is a thread for NZ foods we discover that have great nutritional stats or surprisingly low calories...

Who knew Weight Watchers jelly had protein in it?? Not me! Just had a whole (not one serving, the whole packet made up) jelly plus one serving of Tatua lite whipped cream and it was only 55 calories. The jelly has EIGHT grams of protein and only 1g carbs! I always assumed it's be all carbs so this was a great discovery.

The protein comes from the gelatin of course now I think about it. However I will try to NOT think about the fact that gelatin is made from skin and bones!! Actually, I just read it is made from the collagen in skin and bones so I wonder if it's good for wrinkles lol.

Quaker fibre bars. Just over 100cals, and 7-8g fibre. Tasty, too. The berry ones are my favourite.

Also, Watties lite peaches no added sugar - 82 calories, 3g fibre for the WHOLE TIN

King's soup mix. Not the singles(although someof those are pretty low too, but some are high!) , the mix in the packet, full of veges and grains and stuff, one packet makes 10 x 200ml serves and they're around 67cal per serve.

I love love love these. I open the can, freeze in ziploc baggies and then chop up the frozen peaches and add to smoothies. Yum.

I haven't tried minestrone. I like the tom yum (took a bit to get used to though as it's a broth-based soup not a thick one), leek & potato and chicken & corn.
The chicken noodle is yum, but WAY more calories.

I wish they'd do a pea and ham single. I love the pea and ham one in their packet mix

I was looking for low sodium soy sauce & found that the ones that said they were low sodium on the label cost about $2 extra.
I spent quite a while comparing all of the bottles on the shelf at New World & discovered one called High Mark Japanese Soy Sauce, it's lower in sodium than all the rest & cost the same as normal soy sauce.

I was so stoked with my find that day & nobody at home understood lol

Another one, not necessarily a food find but still helps is to use the fine grater to grate cheese, rather than the regular one or slicing it. You'd be surprised how much further 25g of finely grated cheese goes than regular grated, and how much further both go than a slice!

And on the topic of cheese, use parmesan for stuff like baking and cheese sauce - its no lower in fat than other cheddars, but you use a lot less of it for the same taste : )

Moccona Frappe Latte (there is a mocha one too) - put contents of sachet in magic bullet with 170 - 250mls water and a few ice cubes. 62 Cal, 1.3g fat.

And Jarrah belgian chocolate hot drink. I usually drink coffee but this stuff really does hit the spot when craving a bit of chocolate. 67 cal, 1.7g fat when made with only water (which tastes great).

Kavli Crispy thin all natural whole grain crispbread. Obviously these have been around for awhile ( a Norway product) but I found them so nice. I was hungry while food shopping (a no no, I know) and saw these crackers. When I got home I put on a little light cottage cheese and tomato with a cup of tea. Only had two but found that was just enough to hold but the hunger before dinner.
97% fat free and has the National Heart Foundation tick - if that means anything to you

Been reading this story - Born to run and it mentioned this wonder food Chia seeds so called 'the running food'. Anyway found a recipe that you make 'Marching Crackers' out of Chia, Linseed, Cocoa, Honey and raisins. Bake in a low oven for hours...........and hours....... till crisp! Still waiting.............hope they do crisp up!
Chia seed is supposed to be high in Omega 3 amongst other claims. If you google it there is a ton of stuff about the seeds.

Well after being in a slow oven for at least 8 hours the crackers were still soft and don't taste very nice. Oh well worth a go. Will use the seeds to sprinkle on food instead.
