Week 5

Week 5 done. Can't believe it took me 3 weeks to do week 3, but I just breezed through weeks 4 and 5. I even sped up in the last interval instead of struggling to complete it. I guess we will see how week 6 goes.0

Sounds like you're going to finish easily0

I've been checking in on the c25k board, but I guess I'll check in on this one too.
c210k W13D2 yesterday. It was supposed to be 25min running, 1min walk, 25 min run, but my app turned itself off, and I didn't notice until I was at 29 minutes for the first interval. Then halfway through the 2nd I got to a hill that was killing me! I'm in Illinois.... we don't have hills, so even small ones are tough. I definitely need to do some hill work to improve that. My intervals ended up being 29r, 1w, 13r, 3.5w, 8r.
4.06mi in 55:35 with an average pace of 13:42.
I think I only have 4 more runs in the c210k program until I'm done and can run for 60 minutes straight. Crazy! I'm going to use a runner's world program after I finish this to get up to about 10 miles, then switch to Hal Higdon's half marathon training. It's hard to believe that just 4 months ago I was starting c25k and struggling with 60 seconds of running!
I ran past a couple empty Captain Morgan bottles and a syringe. Classy. I'm just glad I saw the syringe because who knows if it could've gone through my shoe. I'd really prefer not to get AIDS or hepatitis or something just because I like to run. :grumble:0 -
You're doing really well - bit of a pain when the app turned off though but these things happen!
It's amazing the things you run past - I run mostly in the woods or across heathland near my house and right in the middle of the heath there was a baby's crib! No one can get a vehicle in there so they must have carried it at least a mile from the nearest road just to avoid queuing at the dump lol0 -
Well done crista! Four months in and you're planning half marathon training, way to go!0

Completed Week 5, day 1 this morning.
2 runs of 3 miles with a 500 yd walk in the middle.
Overall pace 11:00
Fastest interval: 10:39
Total distance with warmup and cool down: 6.84mi
Other than the huge blister I have on the ball of my foot, it was good! This started as tender callouses, but has now become a blister, despite all my efforts to prevent that. I've bought inserts and socks and have good shoes. I've tried bandaging the area and callous pads.
Any suggestions?0 -
Your foot is probably sliding in the shoe. Try a different way of lacing so your foot stays put.0
-
I kept getting a blister on the same spot on my left foot - my trainer suggested putting Vaseline on it prior to my run and that seemed to help. I also switched socks - I was wearing a thicker running sock and switched to a thinner one in the same brand and I like those better. Also what vardaeml said about lacing your shoes - I make sure mine are pretty secure on my feet.0
-
I am definitely going to make sure my shoes are laced up tight tomorrow and am going to try the mole skin!0
-
Here's instructions for "lock lacing" It's a lacing technique that you might want to try because it reduces slippage.
And, hey, I just found out why my shoe bows always end up rubbing against my ankle.0 -
I was going to try the lock lacing when I ran this morning, but my laces aren't long enough! It was better this morning with moleskin and a more tightly tied shoe. Of course, I only ran 5k this morning, not the 6 mi I would have run for my next day of 5 to 10k. (Wanted to get that virtual 5k in!) I plan to do w5d2 on Sunday.0

That's good!
And I finally learned how to tie my shoes.0 -
Day 2 (RunDouble 5 to 10k- Distance version)
2 runs of 3 mi each with 500 yd walk in the middle.
Overall Pace (including walking interval) 11:29
Fastest 3 mi interval 11:04
I ran my usual loop in the opposite direction so lots more uphill than down! I also started out way too fast- first mile was around 10:20. Made for a tough finish!0 -

But you finished! Great running to be able to run that far and especially at that pace :bigsmile:0 -
W5D1: 3 mile run. Did it on the treadmill at the gym. First treadmill run longer than a couple minutes. Missed being outside but was happy to get my run in.0

Day 3 (RunDouble 5 to 10k Distance Version)
Last day of week 5, last day with walking interval
2 runs of 3 miles with 500 yards walk in the middle
Overall pace: 11:39 min/mi
Fastest 3 mile interval 11:13
I intentionally slowed my pace down because I know I will need to be slower to be able to finish the full 10k next time.0 -
Zen Labs c210k W13D3 done this morning. It's been over a week since my last run, but I managed. My pace slowed to 14:18/mile, but I did it, and I didn't take an extra walk break on the tough hill. My app has decided that it no longer likes to work if I turn on MapMyRun so I start it for the warm-up timing, and when it tells me to start running, I start MMR to track distance and pace of the actual running portion. Then I know to watch the time once I'm past 2 miles so I can take the walk break. It was a little late again today (I think the first interval ended up being around 31 or 32 minutes instead of 30, no biggie), but after the 1 minute walk, I continued to the second interval and did 30 minutes. I ended up with a total of 4.32 miles.
Hopefully I can drag my butt out of bed Thursday morning to get in my first full 60-minute run!
I think since I'm still so short of 10k, I'm going to do a Runner's World personalized plan to increase my distance to about 10 miles, then switch to Hal Higdon's half-marathon training. Gotta get ready for the Princess half* in Feb 2015!
*Note: I'm trying to raise money so I can actually do the Princess half because I'm poor and have to pay a s***-ton in student loan bills every month. I can't post the link here because I think it violates MFP's forum rules so if anyone would like info on donating, PM me. If I can't do it for some reason or have extra donations, I'll contact donors to return money or donate to a charity - I will not keep any donations for myself.0 -
You're all doing so well!
it's like doing C25K again and seeing people running that massive 20mins when I was still on Week 2 - inspiring though lol0 -
Have you seen the car sticker for the princess half? It's sooo cute.0

Week 5 Day 1 done. 30 minutes run, 3 minutes walk, 30 minutes run. Not a fun one. Was up during the night with my sick dog. She's now moved to the diarrhea phase. Got medicine for it yesterday, but it didn't work last night. Then it was warmish and very humid this morning. Plus my IT bad was acting up. All of this was minor, but they added up to a blah run, and a minute slower pace.
At least I've got a good chance of improving with my next two of these runs.0 -

Oh its no fun when the pup isn't well! Our GSD gets diarrhea sometimes and the only thing that helps her is boiled chicken and rice. Or she's just tugging my chain as she prefers this over her normal food .....
Sorry your run didn't go to well, though hardly surprising in the circumstances but it's another one clocked up so it all goes towards improving (that's what I tell myself anyway!).0 -

My IT bands have been bad lately too. Do you have a foam roller? I need to get more consistent with using mine.0 -

I've already decided that I'm going to get a tattoo to commemorate my first half (and add to it when I do my first full). I'm thinking something like this:

Yes, I own one, which means I don't have an excuse for not figuring how to use it, but I just haven't taken the time to look it up.. I have been doing yoga designed to stretch and strengthen the IT bands though.
Part of my problems is that this is something that's been dogging me for years. I just need to focus on it and work on it and hopefully it will get better.0 -
Woo!!! 60 minutes without walking today!!!!!
Only got 4.25 miles with an avg. pace of 14:13, but that's way better than I ever thought I could do, and I'm very happy with it. I didn't even feel like I had to stop at the end, except to go to the bathroom.
I'm leaving with my family to go to the Wisconsin Dells tomorrow through Tuesday, so I might not get my Sunday and Tuesday runs this week, but I'm taking my running clothes and shoes and HRM, and I'll try to get some good running time. I think I'm going to ignore the app and just run until I feel like stopping and just see how far I get. Then I think I'm going to start the Runner's World Smart Coach training to get my distance up to 10 miles for endurance before starting half-marathon training.
I've had a few friends tell me that I'm an inspiration to them with running, and that's probably the nicest thing I ever hope to hear! :blushing:0 -

W5D2 - 2 mile hill run.
Duration: 23:42
1:00 - 12:23
2:00 - 11:19
Pretty big difference in split times, but my first mile is almost always the slowest, the biggest hill was in the first mile, and I paused my app at the bottom of said hill so I could stop & pick better music. I need to come up with a separate playlist for my hill days. I've run up this hill several times and I always focus on the midpoint until I get there, then look up to the top. Today was the first day I looked straight to the top of the hill the whole way up. Last Wednesday I walked the second half of the hill so it was time to take it back.0 -

Nice hill run! I skipped my hill today and I kindof missed it. Strange.0 -
Week 5 Day 2 done. 30 minute run, 3 minute walk, 30 minute run
I started my normal run, but at 5:30 am which is the earliest I've gotten out lately and it was dark! I ran my normal route for a bit and then realized that the wooded area I was going to enter was pitch dark and both the pup and I were not lit up. We had reflective clothing, but that much dark needed lit up since we were risking being passed by a bicycle and we had already been passed by one. So we turned around at about a half mile done and went the other way on the bike trail. I generally don't like that way because of the numerous traffic lights, but I figured it was earlier enough that it was worth trying.
So we ran the bike path for a bit and then around some of the businesses and then back on the bike path and got our run in. Strangely enough I missed not doing the big hill that's on our normal route.0
