I love how he projects this whole air of "Oh whoa is me, the poor Christian minority who is so oppressed and persecuted."

Sorry, but if your religion makes up something like 80% of the country, YOU ARE NOT OPPRESSED!!!!

If I could *like* this comment, I would.

Did you see where this ad ties with Rebecca Black's "Friday" video for the most dislikes? What an idiotic move.

Paul's infatuation with the whole Ayn Rand philosophy is also a red flag IMO.

That's my opinion, also. Rand claimed to be all for equality, inalienable human rights for everyone...but if you're gay, you're just a disgusting piece of garbage. And if you're a woman, you're sexually inferior. I mean, sure, she feels they should have rights, but that they're still inferior. That kind of "logic" screams of a horrible slippery-slope to me.

As for the original topic--this ad--I saw it the other day. It's sickening. Not much else to say.

You know what this actually brings me a little bit of hope and faith in the public.

Perry and whoever else put this together thought this would be their moment, their statement. They thought it would rally the faithful behind him and finally "take this country back" or whatever.

They were wrong. They are a joke. Even large numbers of believers see through this nonsense for exactly what it is. If Perry was looking to ramp up a religiously backed drive for the Presidency he's failed miserably.

Shoot you can't even attack Romney for being a Mormon anymore! As much as I worry and as much as people believe otherwise the truth is becoming quite clear. If you're going to run for President and make your religion a LARGE part of your platform, people aren't interested. This country wants a President with SOME sort of faith, true, but by and large they want us to remain a secular nation. And that makes me smile.

RE: Libertarianism & Ayn Rand - it's an ideaology. That's all. It often doesn't work in the real world. That's the problem. It has no mechanism to account for human greed or corruption. If you'd like we can have a separate thread for this. Ayn Rand is for teenagers who don't understand that life isn't always black and white. That's why Ron Paul supporters are usually young people.

You forgot Terry Goodkind fans, too. If someone starts a separate thread on this topic, that'd be cool, but I wouldn't know what to say to start one, honestly, other than "Rand sucks."

I've often heard people say this of the libertarian philosophy, that it can't work. I think the same can be said of conservatism and liberalism as well.

I'm not sure I understand why "gays in the military" is a Christian issue? Is Rick Perry saying that no homosexuals should hold government positions? Should they not have jobs/careers at all? Maybe I'm missing something as a Christian, but I'm not following his logic. I'm really starting to get ticked off at his ads that use Christianity as a way to get votes.

I think what makes it even worse is that I think he is un-authentic.

People like him think gays should stay in the closet and never let anyone know they are gay. They can go to school and work but they need to act heterosexual. No mention of their BF/GF. No letting anyone know they are gay. No pictures of their BF/GF on their desk, etc. As for the military - they shouldn't be allowed because of the living quarters. After all, those gheys would be oogling every soldier in their barracks dontcha know?

He's just pushing buttons. Trying to win a Republican primary in a very blue, very conservative state. His campaigners got out the Ouija board and figured that this would get him a lot of votes. If I was a centrist Republican I'd feel insulted. Is there any such thing anymore?

Oh, please. So make separate living quarters if you're so scared gay people will be staring at the same sex in the shower. Such a lame excuse. I realize this is an issue that some military men and women have (they don't want homosexuals in their living quarters). That's different than a politician using it as a Christian argument to buy himself some conservative, Christian votes.

I'm a conservative, Christian, republican ticket voter, and a Texan. I'm insulted that he thinks this kind of ad will get me to vote for him. I don't know anyone in my circle of friends who supports this rhetoric of his.

It's a bunch of BS. I was in the Navy, did 36 months of sea duty, generally sharing a berthing compartment ("bedroom") with 100+ other guys. There are shower stalls, there are toilet stalls, you have your bunk with curtains. If you want to be shy, nobody has to see you naked. Of course lots of us ran around like jaybirds 'cause we were young squids and that's what we did, but you could be very demure if you wanted and some guys were.

BTW - yes, I was pretty sure a couple of the guys were gay. I didn't care, and I don't think anybody else did either. Danny was a super guy and a fantastic baker and a good firefighter and we all thought he was awesome. He baked us birthday cakes and kept the best goodies for us and fed the lopsided stuff to the officers and we didn't care who he bunked down with. And this was in '86.

"conservative, Christian, republican ticket voter"(s) are exactly who this ad is aimed at Patti. Perry's campaign staff thinks this will work. That's what they think of you.

Eh...I realize I'm speaking from a very "outside looking in" view...but every straight person that I'm personally friends with, that isn't married, has easily gotten sex from their fellow soldiers, or the local people where they're stationed at (yes, even in very Muslim-oriented countries). And a lot of my male military buddies have something they refer to as "Gay Tuesday" (or is it Gay Thursday?) where apparently "it's okay to be gay!" and engage in homosexual sex. Again, I'm not speaking for EVERY military person, just those that I know personally. Point is, sex is going to happen anywhere, anytime...some people just, for varied reasons, really hate homosexual people, so they're using them as a scapegoat for votes from ignorant people who just see "he hates gays? I hate gays, too! I'm voting for him!" People who look at things rationally (as you and most everyone else here do) see through his BS.

Also, while I'm not sure if this one particular friend's situation is something new/uncommon, I just wanna throw out there, that one of my friends was in "co-ed" bootcamp. So it anyone was gay or straight, didn't really matter...with the exception of showers, everyone was "together."

It wasn't like that back in the somewhat homophobic 80's Kimmy. There was probably some "friggin' in the riggin'", but it was definitely on the down low. I was never propositioned by a shipmate, and I was a pretty cute kid.

I know my kids' generation (my kids are 23 & 21) have a very different POV on sexuality and gender issues than we did, and I'll bet it is a whole different world nowadays. I still think it's pretty irrelevent. The 300 Spartans were an effective fighting force.

Right. I should mention that my friends I was referring to are in their mid-to-late 20's. Times are always a'changin'! I know my own parents and extended family are very "anti-gay"...while the ones closer to my own age, aren't. My little brother actually defines himself as "asexual."

ooo now I wanna watch 300.

Good flick, lots'a beefcake. Not so homoerotic, and probably not as much as it should have been to be historically accurate.

Yes, homophobia is dying. RIP, and good riddance.
