It wasn't like that back in the somewhat homophobic 80's Kimmy. There was probably some "friggin' in the riggin'", but it was definitely on the down low. I was never propositioned by a shipmate, and I was a pretty cute kid.
I know my kids' generation (my kids are 23 & 21) have a very different POV on sexuality and gender issues than we did, and I'll bet it is a whole different world nowadays. I still think it's pretty irrelevent. The 300 Spartans were an effective fighting force.
When I was in high school, I had a friend who was 2-3 yrs older than me. About 1970, he joined the navy. I remember he was gone only about 6 months when I got a call from him--he was in town and wanted to go out for some drinks. I asked if he was on leave and he said, No, he was out (more than I knew at the time ;-). I asked what had happened and he said he had had a nervous breakdown.
So we met at a bar. In my naivete at the time (I was only 17), the fact that the bar was called "The Playpen" meant absolutely nothing to me. In those days, going out meant looking to meet women, but needless to say, there were slim pickings at "The Playpen". But it still didn't dawn on me.
After 30 minutes or so of us sitting at a table drinking beer, I remarked on the lack of females at this particular establishment. My friend looked at me with a smile and said, "That's because this is a gay bar". I thought to myself that it was an odd choice for him to suggest for us to meet, but I STILL DIDN'T GET IT.
Finally, he took pity on me and told me he was gay, and that's why he had left the navy, and that's why we were sitting in a gay bar. I still laugh when I think about that incident. But it was a great experience in that we remained friends and I got to expand my social consciousness a little. I was introduced to an underground community that gave a whole new meaning to Cincinnati's nickname of "The Queen City".0
