I have a desk job and know that it's not conducive to long-term health.
USA Today had an article a few months ago about sedentary jobs and increases in cancer risks. Here it is:
http://yourlife.usatoday.com/health/medical/cancer/story/2011-11-03/Prolonged-sitting-linked-to-breast-cancer-colon-cancer/51051928/1
So I try to get up and walk around at least once an hour ... even if it's just to talk to someone (instead of using the phone!). My office is only a two story building, so stairs don't come into play. But I usually take the elevator up from the garage. I know ... LAZY!!!!0 -
I have a desk job...I work from home...that allows me to get up and chase after my 4 year old occassionally
I also live in a bilevel so always up and down stairs!0 -
I don't work outside of my home, I do some paperwork occasionally for my husband. So there is NO excuse for me not to get my butt moving!0
-
i've been out of work a couple of years now - so you would think that i have plenty of time to excercise - but oh no *shakes head* i'm just totally lethargic & after the injury i've gotten into the habit of not going outside further than the shop or putting the bins out0
-
Oh my, hope you're doing okay.
Can you share with us what kind of injury?
Maybe we can, based on what's wrong, we can suggest exercise that won't exarcerbate your injury. It's even possible, someone here has the same kind of affliction.0 -
oh sure, it was a back injury, nothing secret
doing a lot better now thanks, but it still plays up from time to time. it left me more or less immobile for a few months, which is where all the trouble started - & of course out of work, so bad habits were formed.
strangely i find that if i get into doing stomach exercises for a few weeks, this actually really helps, as it builds up core muscles & protects your back - i was given this advice by my chiropractor & it's true! sadly i've been too lazy to keep them up though :frown:
i need to stay away from anything hugely high impact right now, as my extra weight puts more strain on my back - talk about a catch twenty-two! lol! however i just need to stop making excuses about doing any exercise now0 -
I don't have a desk job...I'm just hella lazy! Or, WAS!0
-
I *think* the exercise I get during the day is more than sufficient for maintaining health/weight, as long as I control my intake. I do work out in the field, primarily. My new pedometer says I walk an average of 3.2 miles during the workday (min 1.6, max 5.7 so far) and there's a moderate amount of exercise involved besides the walking.0

about 8yrs ago I went from florist to desk job...I still love my job now, just not the desk part0
-
Was being the operative word, JVanDam77 !!! Now you're here, doing something about it.
Glad you're here with us!
Gribbish - 3.2 miles/day is great! I aspire to get that much exercise in one day... working on it.

I have a sedentary desk job but I try and get up at least two times a day just to run up and down the steps.. I don't know if it helps but it makes me feel like I am doing something.0

I have a desk job which I always thought I'd love. But after working as a Restaurant Manager for years it is very boring and I really don't care much for it. I do get up about 1x an hour and walk to the rest room or copy machine.0
-
Yup, me too. I am tied to a desk all day which is half my weight problem.0
-
work and school desk0

I am currently looking for a job, but I am also going back to school too. I start on Tuesday. Even though i will most likely end with a desk job.
But i am not going to let myself get lazy!0 -
Heh... I don't exactly have a desk job. It's more a couch job. During the day, my primary duty is homeschooling my son, so there's quite a bit of sitting involved, no matter how many activities I try to add to the day. Also, I run an etsy shop, so I spend lots of time working on knitting and sewing.
Fortunately, in the summer, I work at a park as a "host." Host is a fancy word for saying collector-of-fees-enforcer-of-rules-mower-of-grass-general-custodian-painter-and-whatever-else-needs-to-be-done-doer! I love that job! But... I do need to work on upping my activity during the off months.
I recently started using a pedometer thingy. It goes with a game (motivational support type thing) for my Nintendo DSi... I found that I average about 3,000 steps a day (eep!), so my goal is to consistently hit 5,000 steps, then I'll up my goal to 6,000, and so on.0 -
Not I!
I run a retail store!0 -
I have a desk job. When I first started here I would make it a point to do pushups & body weight squats a couple of times per day. Also, I work with kids and they have a Total Gym (you know, the Chuck Norris thing) and whenever possible I would do 3-5 minutes on that as well. I slacked a bit but I am back to doing it now.0
-
Totally at the desk....for approximately 9 hours a day. Schedule my workouts for the evening so I'm not desk to couch!0
-
Yep, I have a desk job. I do try to get up a few times a day to walk up the stairs even if it's just a couple flights. And I've found that I get up to go talk to folks across the building instead of using IM.0

Well, I have both a desk job, and an active job. The only difference is that, Im about to leave my active job.
Active job is working in a professional kitchen - Im running around all day, flights of stairs to get my food areas stocked because the elevator is broken, lots of heavy lifting, moving, pushing, pulling...I get out of work and my chef jacket is SOAKED with sweat.. I got home at 1am this morning from working, and Im still feeling the typical aches and pains of a good slam.
With an empty nest now, I no longer have to work two full time jobs (YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!) and can concentrate on my healthcare job. I am an Advanced Medical Accounts Receivable Rep with 26 specialties of medicine under my belt. I am also a Certified Medical Specialist with a clinical background in patient care. I use my CMS background to help do my appeals for denied claims. I start my new billing job on January 30th.
When I start that job, I will be joining a gym in my area to stay active. Ive worked very hard at making dietary changes due to medical problems, and dropped almost 70lbs... Im at the halfway point, and I dont want to gain it all back...0 -

Congratulations on both the empty nest situation AND the new job!!! I'm envious of your medical background, as I have tried in the past two years to "break in" into the medical industry (coming from being in my own industry for over 20 years, wanted to try something different, to make a difference.) Cooking profession is hard on the back/legs/knees, so that's probably good you're switching...
Wondering... do you have mixed emotions about having an "empty household" now?

Hate the keyboards and yes most of the time behind a desk, but I get out. I go outside and walk the block for every two hours sitting at my desk. Sometimes I wish I worked outside all of the time, then again, sometimes not.0

I work with pediatric and adolescent boys in a psych hospital. Not exactly a desk or sedentary job, although somehow I find myself sitting around an awful lot...0
-
I consider that I have two jobs. First, house hubby looking after three boys 3, 5 and 9 in a three story, four bed house. My other job is study. I study at home for an astrophysics degree. So if I am not wiping noses, arbitrating sibling disputes! Cleaning house or cooking meals I have my head in books and Internet.
And to think I said I had a sedentary lifestyle!0 -

I was laid off from my healthcare job back in August 2010 - New Hampshire took a major hit, and the two doctors I was responsible for, left to partner up with one of our major hospitals in the area.... I wasnt capable of following them because they have a central billing office... so I was still thankful for having my Chef position at the time, and a paycheck to bring home.
I didnt find my chef position difficult on the back/legs/knees at all.. in fact, I loved the rigorous effort of running around with my head chopped off! The adrenalin rush was INTENSE!! When you are making 130 individual sauteed meals in 150 minutes, you really bust your *kitten*!!!!! LOL!!!! My arms feel like "Ahhhhhhnold" when Im done! HAHAHAAHAHHA!!!!!
No mixed emotions about the empty nest. My daughter as a matter of fact, just called me yesterday to tell me she just got accepted at Franklin Pierce University with an additional $34,000.00 scholarship AND a $10,000 Art scholarship thanks to winning a competition here locally... She visits when she can while she is finishing high-school... I think my daughter was more shocked when she saw her room all cleaned out and now its an entertainment room.... it hit home for her real fast...0 -
I work a desk job for 20 hours a week part time. I also have to drive there as its in another town.
The rest of my work is as a singer/karaoke & disco host, so this is quite active moving my sound equipment around from place to place and dancing around all night :P
I take a few extra hours at an entertainment venue doing bar work and gig set ups too so hope that my work activity balances out0 -
I do.0

We home school as well. There is lots of time to exercise, but we had various health issues that we didn't know about for a long time. I thought I was just old and my son was just into computers and reading and writing. I was wrong! Now our family is into aikido and we all use the elliptical. Eventually I would like to start running.0

I have been unemployed for the last 3 months. I am only a half step away from a job I really want at the corporate headquarters of a hospital system out here, and yes it will be a desk job. On the good side because it is with a hospital group they have various health challenges for their employees. On the downside while I have had time to do more exercise, I have been depressed from being out of work and haven't really exercised. Too focused on finding work I told myself. But honestly it has just been laziness, I think.0
