Welcome! Dancing your way is a great idea! How are you going to track it? Are you doing a specific kind of dance? (Sorry for the questions - I'm a former professional dancer, and I cannot believe it never occurred to me to dance to Rivendell, LOL.)

I have a FitBit that logs my steps and my miles for me (as long as I remember to wear it...:grumble: ) So I sync it up at the end of my dance workouts and take the mileage off of my online log and add it to my ticker.

I have been going back and forth on the Fitbit. I'm going to have to look into it a final time and make a decision.
So, I have another question for you - I was trying to add a ticker for this to MFP and I could not figure out how to do it. It seemed like it only let you use the preset MFP one. How did you add yours? I must be missing a sticky or post somewhere on how to do this. TIA!

I have the FitBit classic, because they hadn't invented Premium yet, and it works just dandy. Then when they synced up their website with MFP everything got a lot easier (even if they're still working out some of the kinks!).

MFP used to let us customize all of our signatures, until it got too much for the boards to handle, so originally my travel ticker code was in my signature. Now I just paste it into the body of the posts (only the ones on this board, though).

I use the tickers from www.lilyslim.com because they're pretty clean-cut and don't have any extra advertising text.

And then just use the [ img ] IMAGE SOURCE CODE GOES HERE [ /img ] but remove the spaces in the img tags.

    There...I hope that works...

So just sandwich the http://sfgf.lilyslim.com/Obmlm4.png link between the image tags like this:

[ img ] http://sfgf.lilyslim.com/Obmlm4.png [ /img ] (After removing all the spaces in that line.)

    No problem!

I must be just the lamest - I cannot get this to work for me! I haven't ever had this much trouble with a ticker on other forums in the past. So sorry!

This is sooo COOOLL!! (I always wondered how many flights-of-steps up equalled the climb up to The Pass where the giant spider is [Sam gets Sent Away by Frodo part-way up]

Question: I started a Walk It Out program on my Wii just last month, and racked up ~ 125 miles throughout July ... is it ok if I apply that to my "first leg out of Bag End" ?
  • Hi everyone,
I'm Laura, 33, live near Minneapolis, MN. I started planning my walk to Rivendell a couple of weeks ago (but went on vacation, so I'm only a couple of miles in). I will be seriously starting my journey today! I'm planning to read "The Hobbit" during the first part of this journey (and hopefully be done with the book before the movie comes out in December), but a girl only has so much free time.

I'm very excited about this journey!

I decided that New Month = New challenge and new journey. So I counting my cumulative mileage starting with what I did last night (Aug. 1) See you on the Bag End to Rivendale thread!

Hey Anthony. I just found this group too! It looks cool. Oh, if you have a FitBit (I just got one so I've been exploring), they have under the Log/Activities tab a place where it tells you daily the miles you've walked. I'm going to see if I can keep a journal as I've only been on for a few days. I don't know if you have one but if yes - that might be an option.

Hello! My name is Valerie, I'm 43 and live in SouthWest Missouri. I had heard about the Eowyn Challenge a few years ago. Recently, some friends & I started the Bag End to Rivendell walk. I was curious to see if there was any discussion on MFP about the walk to Mordor and was thrilled to find this group. Currently, I'm 6.95 miles in. This is proving to be a fun way to motivate myself to walk!

I am way way late to this challenge but I'd still love to participate! I'd love to walk from Bag End to Rivendale and see where I end up from there, but that is a good starting point. I think I will start this on January 1st.

If any of you out there are runners, do you count that as your mileage as well or is this strictly just walking? Either way I'd still love to participate!

I believe if you are moving it counts. Walking, running, biking, swimming, etc. are all ways to get us closer to our goals.

Hello! I saw this thread on the boards a while back, but I forgot all about it until a friend sent it to me again today. I'm excited to get started on this.
    Cheers!

Hello! I'm Amelia (as you can probably guess from my username). I'm 20 and from Texas but spend most of my time in Alabama while attending school. I am going to try to make it from Bag End to Rivendell first, and if that goes well, I'll keep going on to Mordor. I probably won't start for about another week. I like to use the free workout machines at the student rec center so I'll wait until I get back to campus.

I only found the existence of these challenges yesterday; I'm on my treadmill 3 times a week anyway so this should be a fun way to push myself a little further - the second I hit 30 minutes I stop. I decided I'm not going to count the miles I've done this week and will just start tomorrow...to Rivendell!

    Hi -
I'm Rachel, and I'm thrilled to be starting off from Bag End today. I'm going to count distance on my exercise bike as well (considering it to be my hobbit pony). Would welcome any new friends along the way. :)

Hi folks. I need some motivation to get my butt to the gym and hopefully this it. I am a Tolkien nut, play Lord of the Rings online and love the films. I am 37, live in the UK and am a teacher.

My journey starts today - I am leaving Bag End!

Welcome to the group. It's always good to have companions when we set out on a quest. It's a long road, but don't get discouraged, we'll be right along side you.
  • Hi I'm Nat and I will be biking my way to Mordor! I am a big fan of LOR, so thanks for the fun ride :)

  • Hi, I'm Holly, and I love LOTR. I've read the books, seen the movies, and played the strategy game (battle for middle earth) and the mmorpg (LOTRO). I'm just getting into jogging with my husband, and we use fit its. I'll start my journey from Bag End tomorrow!

I am Jim and I am IN!! I am 41 and have just started training for my first Triathlon. One doesn't simply WALK into Mordor, so I'll swim, bike, and run there!

I love the idea of the big map to mark my progress! Anyone got a link wo a decent (yet affordable) wall map?
  • It's full dark and I've jumped the hedge, went through the gate and onto the lane headed west.... My name's Joann and I'm a fan of all things Middle Earth, I usually take a walk 1.25 to 1.50 miles daily so it will be MUCH slower than our intrepid hobbit friends...but as someone once said ...the fun is in the journey.

Hi! I'm Jen, 30, NorCal, about 150 lbs to lose. I already use a stationary bike for my cardio.. but it can be boring! Now I have an adventure to work towards. :D I started my journey today.. and found that going for distance instead of time made me work even harder. (Hooray!) I decided to track my progress on my MFP blog, since I wasn't using it for anything else. For now my goal is Rivendell.. we'll see where my journey takes me when we get there!

Hi, this is an excellent idea to move around more! I looooove LotR, especially the Fellowship. To Rivendell and beyond!

New to MFP, 3 weeks in and I decide I need a walking plan. I heard of Eowyn's Challenge years ago and wanted to go, but I never got out of Bag End! So this time I am determined to leave my pantry behind and "...step onto the road..."

I'm hobbit at heart, I even play a hobbit in LotRO, and a walking adventure is just what the waistline needs!

I'm glad to have company along the journey.

IRL I'm a wife and mother, in my 40s, a Tolkein nut, a teacher, a knitter (dwarf mitts being a current project) and whatever else catches my fancy this week. ;)

Oh my goodness this is amazing. My name is Ruth and I live in Indiana. Yesterday I said "I hate running, this sucks, I will never run again!!!" after an especially hot and hilly run. I think I need some motivation, I am defintly starting this adventrue tomorrow. Love the idea of keeping track on an actual map. I just realized how perfect this is also, my inspirational quote is from LOTR! I love hobbits!

    I love hobbits, too, Ruth!

I just started out, so since you are running and I am walking, I think you'll out pace me, but it's wonderful to share the road. Look forward to seeing your progress.

You never know where your feet might lead you.
