I have done three days now and my thighs are beginning to feel a bit sore. I've been doing 5 sets of 20 - not on any particular schedule, just when it crosses my mind. If necessary I might do smaller sets.

    1 - 4/3 - 100 squats
    2 - 4/4 - 100
    3 - 4/5 - 100

:flowerforyou: Clover, doing squats 20 at a time is a great idea

I am doing lunges in much smaller groups (no more than 10 at a time)

    today I did 140 lunges
100 ordinary ones and 20 with dumbells in my hands. my balance is getting better.

Thank you barbiecat for telling me about the new thread. I have been doing the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred in addition to my other exercises. It has been pretty good so far.

:flowerforyou: MuffRuff, glad to see you logging with us........the 30 day shred and 500 squats is an awesome workout.

    today I did 100 lunges:bigsmile:

I count my day starting after supper when I'm on the computer and ending about the same time the next day.......I do 40 lunges while I brush and floss my teeth...my bathroom is big enough for lunges and doing something at the same time makes me really concentrate on balance......I do the other 60 lunges usually while I walk one dog at a time early in the morning, usually while it's still dark.....I have a leash in one hand and a small flashlight in the other......I have to check for solid footing before doing any lunges and usually only do 2 or 4 at a time before the dog decides to move on to another location to sniff the dirt or the grass or the bushes.

    4 - 4/6 - 100

My day starts after breakfast. During the week my family have just left for school or work, and on the weekend, they are all still asleep. Yesterday I did my first squats early, then did the rest during my daughters soccer practice. While the team practices, I walk laps all over the larger park, stopping here and there to do squats, push-ups or whatever pops into my mind. I'm careful not to do my squats right next to her practice field, that would be embarrassing for her.

    Hello MuffRuff, welcome

 Clover, what a great idea to get your own exercise while your daughter practices soccer

:flowerforyou: today I did my weight training so in addition to the 100 regular squats, I did 20 of them holding 15 pound dumbbells and 20 of them holding 10 pound dumbbells.

 Barbie from NW Washington state where it was cold and frosty this morning and warm and sunny this afternoon.

Got an extra set of squats in last night while brushing my teeth.

I've visited in NW Washingtin before. The landscape is very pretty, both on the canal and along the Pacific. I am in Colorado along the foothills. We never really know what the weather will be like in the spring. Could be anything from 3 feet of snow to shirtsleeve sunny days. Happy Easter.

Our dog's name is Chelsea-Pepper. She is a cocker/poodle mix. She is about 5 now and we've had her for 4 years. We got her from a rescue group. Her soft fur keeps her looking like a puppy, especially when her paws get fluffy. What kind of dogs do you have?

 Clover, my dogs are standard poodles, they were both the smallest in their litters and they are female so they are smaller than most standards so they are manageable for me to walk them together. We walk for at least two hours every day and when i walk them one at a time first thing in the morning I do some of my lunges while they sniff the grass, trees, and bushes. My black poodle is Brandy and the red one is Sasha. Brandy is six years old and Sasha is four.

 today I did 100 ordinary lunges and 40 with dumbbells as part of my weight training.

 MuffRuff, I think the 500 squats you do most days certainly balances out with the days you don't do any.

In addition to my squats, I did 50 modified push-ups and 50 rear delt raises. Soccer practice again yesterday evening. The great thing about exercising while the team practices, is I don't feel like I ought to be doing something else for the family - like cooking & cleaning.

Standard poodles can be pretty big. Glad yours are managable. It's been beautiful outside lately.

:flowerforyou: clover, how modified are your pushups and what are rear delt raises?

today I went to my regular line dance class and then substituted for the line dance teacher in the next town.

I did 100 lunges    this is day # 10

Well Barbie, I do modified push-ups in two ways: One is bent knee push-ups. Back in the day we called this position "girls push-ups." Another is to do push-ups against a raised surface. This puts my body at closer to a 45 degree angle to the ground instead of parallel which reduces the exertion needed, but still builds or maintains the strength in my arms. Somtetimes I use the kitchen counter. When I'm at the park I use a picnic table or the back of a park bench. Some folks even do a standing push-up by standing with your hands on a wall and leaning in toward the wall and "pushing" back to the standing upright position.

For the rear deltoid raises: I have done this with a TV exercise gal, Margaret Richards, on her Body Electric program on PBS. Basically, from a standing position you lean forward a bit from the hip, and then do little raises with your arms up above your back (to the rear). I'm not sure this the correct name for this manuver, but it seems to work the back side of the shoulder, which I think is the rear deltoid. Anyway, I scanned the strength choices in MFP, and chose "real deltoid raises" to log this exercise.

I try to do something aerobic, and something to build strength every day.

What other exercises do you do?

    barbiecat Posts: 17,210 Member
 Clover, I do a lot of the exercises from "Strong Women Stay Young"..........side hip raises, back leg extensions, hamstring curls with ankle weights, biceps curls, overhead raises, lying triceps raises with dumbbells, triceps pushups and regular pushups on the seat of chair, calf raises with and without dumbbells, plank, and wall squats. The routine takes about an hour and twenty minutes and I do it three days a week.

today was weight training day so I did the usual 100 lunges and then 20 with 10 pound dumbbells and 20 with 15 pound dumbbells.

 how clever to do some strength training at the park

we are going away for the weekend and I don't know how much chance I'll have to be on the computer until Sunday night.

Clover, you are doing a wonderful job! barbiecat, I always love your words of encouragement. Hopefully I will buy a pass at my school to attend any exercising class I want. They even have cycling and dance classes for a pretty cheap price to use for a year. I feel like doing some group activities will be more fun.

Thanks MuffRuff! I notice you do an amazing amount of squats. You must have great legs. Group exercise classes can be fun and a good way to make friends. I have gone to exercise classes a few times over the years, but I have to confess, I tend to be a bit of a loner. What kind of school do you go to? community college, tech school, university And what subject are you studying?

Barbiecat, I have read some of Miriam Nelson's books. I have Stong Women Eat Well in my bookcase. She addresses subjects in an easy read manner, and not too boring. I like the outdoors, so exercising outside is fairly easy for me to make happen. And my daughter is in soccer season now, so during practice I have an hour to kill anyway... Might as well do some walking and a few calesthenics and get some fresh air. Have fun on your trip!

Hey clover5! My legs have definitely improved, but I still have a long way to go. I am still self conscious about my legs since I have gone so long without wearing shorts and skirts. Hopefully one day I will reach a point where I can do so. I started Jillian Michaels Killer Buns and Thighs today, and it was a challenge but not too bad since I have been doing this challenge for a while. The 30 Day Shred has been great. Today was my weight training day as well. So, I got a good workout. I feel you on the loner part. I tend to be a loner as well. I go to a university, and I have a degree in Studio Art, but right now I am working on my other two degrees, Japanese ( three more classes to go) and Economics.

barbiecat, Ihope you enjoy your trip this weekend!

    04/13/2012 - 500 squats
04/14/2012 - I am tired from the Killer Buns and Thighs, since there are a lot of exercises. For now I will count those as my squats for today. However, I may do some squats later.

04/14/2012 - I forgot to mention I did Leslie Sansone's 5 Really Big Miles as well. It was great since she also incorporated squats, lunges, and strengthening exercises.

 I am home ----alone----my hubby continued the trip by himself to California to spend a week with a friend and I rode home from the event we went to with some friends.......the pets are still being boarded and can't be picked up until Monday morning. I am something of a loner, too, and as much as I love my husband and my pets, I am going to enjoy this brief time alone.

    Friday 100 lunges
    Saturday 100 lunges

I also managed to walk 17,000 steps each day  in spite of long hours in the car and and all day meeting today........I got up early and walked on the treadmill at the hotel fitness center for an hour and walked during every break during the meeting today.

 MuffRuff, I can't believe how many people have told me that they can barely do 20 squats....I didn't dare tell them about your 500 squats a day. you are multi-talented with your several degrees in different fields and your fitness routine......I know you'll be rewarded in time with the legs you want for dresses and shorts......my legs are still the chubbiest part of me and I keep on working on them....today I saw a woman a little younger than me with great looking slim tanned legs and I started to say something to her about how fit she looked and then I noticed that she was carrying around at least 30 extra pounds around her middle so I said nothing.

 clover, someone said that the best exercise is the one you'll do, and you seem to have found the location and the activities that work for you....I think being a loner is very productive......if I had to wait around for someone else to workout with me, I'd still be waiting:laugh:  I'm fortunate to have found the line dance classes but usually classes aren't my thing.

    Good afternoon,

    Days 1 - 10 - 1020
    11 - 4/14 - 100
    12 - 4/15 - 100

I had logged on this morning and typed a responce to you two, and when I clicked on post, I found out that MFP had shut down the site to do maintainence. Was a bit disappointed, but oh well, nothing I could do. So...

I have heard of Jillian Michaels exercise DVD's, but have not tried them.
I went for several years without wearing skirts or dresses. Not because of weight, but because I was kind of a tomboy. When I started wearing them, I was definitely out of my comfort zone. It took me some time to get used to the feel. MuffRuff you are going to look great! Also, your education is impressive. I went to a community college myself (years ago) and learned to be a bookkeeper. Not a glamoros carreer, but it has served me well.

Barbiecat, I get your point about not waiting for others to join me to exercise. My husband likes to walk with me and the dog, and even played tennis with me a couple times last week, but usually, I'm on my own. I find exercise to be meditative anyway, and I like the time alone with my thoughts, or sometimes in prayer.

    Happy Sunday you two.

 Clover I consider my walking time to be a form of meditation.....my husband does formal zen meditation and is always urging me to try it, but walking does for me what seated meditation does for him.

  today was a weight training day so I did extra lunges with dumbbells    140 lunges today

:flowerforyou: don't have skirts or dresses any more primarily because I am always so cold

    Hey there,

I feel a little out of step since I usually post on this thread in the mornings, but I've already reported yesterdays squats to you. I'v e done 20 for today so far, and will continue.

Now that the weekend is over, and my family is off to work and school, maybe I can get back to my normal routine. My steps yesterday were over 12000. The sun is back out today, so I am looking forward to getting outside. This week I hope to get started with some spring gardening. I love all the spring flowers, and flowering trees. Also, I have some bookkeeping to get done.
