Three days til our first weigh in. Has anyone been able to access the weight chart spreadsheet?
Here's the link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Al2TW0PcYs1tdE1hNExtR2VwdDlkcDE4aVFWYktOdXc
Please let me know if you have trouble adding your name and weight. I'll be glad to see what I can do.

Just weighed in! I'd regained any previous loss after going off plan for a few weeks. Hoping this challenge refocuses me! Would love to make some serious progress this month.0

Your reason for trying this is exactly why I gave ketosis a shot 3 1/2 weeks ago. I'd been losing slowly, really slowly since the summer, but had re-gained 6 lbs in Feb and March. In my past, I would have given up. But something in me has shifted since this past summer. Something inside me just questioned why I gained and wondered what could I do differently not to gain anymore and instead begin losing again.
I'm positive Gary Taubes book "Why We Get Fat" had an impact on me. (I'm actually re-reading it) I read it last month-ish and it really brought to light so many things I've always thought about my being overweight. So many misconceptions that have been repeated so many times by magazines and the news that I'd come to believe they were all true. The main thing that book did for me is it taught me a scientific approach to what puts fat on our bodies and what takes it off.
After re-gaining those 6 lbs, then reading that book, I was more determined than ever to keep trying, keep going, and try to lose in a different way. That way for me was to try ketosis. I gave myself an initial 30 days of trying it to see how I'd do. May 9th will be day 30. I started at 226.8 and by the 21st day of ketosis I was down to 219.6. I did some exercise, but nothing like I read people are doing here on MFP. Just some walking and a few days of renting a bike in Minneapolis. i DID stay with in a ketogenic range throughout with the exception of the 3rd or 4th day.
In addition to the weight loss, I seem to be experiencing lower blood sugar. When I test, I'm in very normal ranges. This has been one of my long term goals all along, to lower my blood sugars. I've been type 2 for about 10 years and I REALLY want to be free of it, I want off the meds, I want my body to work efficiently without medications. High cholesterol and high blood pressure are also why I'm doing this. I want off all these meds. I want to help my body work properly without pills. I want to live a healthy life at a normal weight, something I've never been able to maintain in my past. It's time!
So, this is why I tried ketosis, this is why I'm going to keep trying it, and this is why I thought a challenge to share with my friends here would be a worthwhile venture. Some of us have a little amount to lose, some of us, like me have a lot more. Personally, I'd like to shed another 50 lbs. If things keep progressing like they have, I'll stick with ketosis to get me close or at my goal weight of 170. (I'm 5'10" and think that would be a good weight for me)
I'm so glad that you all are here, ready to get started on our month long challenge. Your support and encouragement mean the world to me. I hope I can help y'all in some way too.0 -
I was down to 199 yesterday and allowed myself to have a sub for dinner, felt sick all night from the weight of it suffocating me. And this morning I was 204.6 .... I had Bacon and Eggs for breakfast0
-
I just logged my weight! I'm up from 124 to 127.8 from eating high carb and grains lately, so this is exactly what I need to kick my butt into gear.0

I'm no expert, but it sounds like you might not do well with bread? I know being up 5 pounds might feel disastrous, but actually it's doing you a favor. You see how your body reacts, and fast to eating a high carb food...feeling sick and gaining 5 lbs. I think it's actually a wonderful bit of knowledge for you to have, especially the day before you started fulltime on this challenge.
I truly have to learn the hard way too. I have to get to a point where the 'thing' that I'm doing that makes me feel good immediately has worse side effects afterwards, making the 'thing' not worth doing in the first place. How many times I've repeated these 'thing' mistakes til finally I go "wow, it's just not worth it!" MANY TIMES because of my thick head!
I'm really curious to see how you do in 30 days...I'll bet it'll be amazing!0 -

You're at at an enviably low weight to begin with! Though you may only need to drop a few pounds, I know those pounds are important to you and I'm really glad you're here trying this with us!0 -

I don't know why I had to have that last meal, LMFAO.... but I am even suffering from it today - I am very sluggish. I know carbs don't react well with my body I am a carb addict.0 -

Haha, thank you! I am 5'0... and definitely still have a good chunk of belly fat that needs to go (after having my son, it's taking awhile). Really it's more about sticking to the primal blueprint/paleo more stringently. I started in December 2011 and have tried to keep my carbs on average between 50-100g, but I usually end up on the high end of that. I want to challenge myself to be strict for the next 30 days and hopefully create a habit.Glad to be here!

I was eating about the same amount of carbs that you mentioned...and it's my suspicion that I was probably sneaking in a little sugar here and there from all the berries I was eating and the kombucha I was drinking. I'm telling myself once I get this weight off, I can have those things again, just not right now. I've got too far to go to be slipping cheats in. I don't want this to take 3 years to lose this weight. I'm not in a huge hurry, but it'd be nice to be at goal within a year. I will be patient and kind to myself if it doesn't happen that fast. It's not a sprint, it's a marathon!
Which is exactly why Biggest Loser irks me so. They slam those people into a mode so crazy it makes my head spin. Who could maintain the way of life they present? Not me! I worry that the contestants heads aren't caught up with their body and that they go back to what they knew when they leave. I know some keep it off, but that sweet Erik that won one year gained almost all of his weight back and it was heartbreaking.
I'm okay with this being slowish. I'm learning along the way and best of all, I think I've found the key to making it all work together...to lose slowly, to lower blood sugar, normalize cholesterol and blood pressure. My hope is it'll continue to work if I stay consistent.0 -
^^^^ My thoughts exactly, Elaine. ^^^^0

Down a tiny bit this week but I'll take it. Did end up imbibing this weekend, so that slowed me down I know. Still away keeping relatively low w carbs, away from sugar, etc. How did everyone else do?0

Keto has been a life saver for me I am not manic/depressed anymore and I actually feel NORMAL for the first time in 15 years
! I have been on Keto for 13 days and havent cheated once (only cuz I know what happens if i do!) I get so sick for 3-4 days after I eat like I use to. On saturday I thought about going and getting my junk food choice and really had to talk myself down... in the end I decided on sugar free jello!
The only problem I seem to really have is my husband is trying to cut his carbs down a little at a time. We have food in the house that is "safer" then most foods but I really want to just "have a bite"0 -
Try looking up some of the great recipes they have for Paleo desserts online. Maybe switching over to a less conventional sweet treat would satisfy you both. If you're not Diabetic, then a little treat now and then would be nice. Unless it triggers cravings, then you know it's just too high in carbs for you at this point.
Weigh in...I'm so impressed with all of our results, everyone (except me) lost at least a little weight. That's six out of seven people! Wonderful! I noticed my weight went up when my period started, almost 3 lbs, and by Sunday it was down to within .2 lb of where we started last week, so I'll take that as a mini victory even if it wasn't a loss.
I'm so happy to see y'all's results. So happy this is working for you!0 -
I finished my 2nd week of keto doing great. Got on the scale yesterday im up 5lbs!? -lol
I honestly believe that the scale is a liar because I have been looking at myself in the mirror etc and I can see weight loss but the scale says no you have gained! I weigh myself at 6am this morning and was up 5 lbs then wet to the bathroom back to bed... then woke up around noon went to the bathroom and lost 3lbs doing that ?! lol... I honestly am thinking that there is something wrong wtih my scale or my body is just being weird this week.
I have heard this story over and over again and im not giving up! I know that if my body loses alot of weight in a week (7lbs my first week) that It will try and stop the weight lost as much as possible. Im still in Ketosis but I have a feeling my body is just mad at me and trying to fight me currently0 -
Scales are lying hateful boxes. I want a tshirt that says that.0

Love this ^^^^
That's part of the reason I am also measuring my body fat %. I'd like to think that I'll lose body fat but perhaps am gaining muscle. Though this week has been a bit challenging with stress (ok, that's an understatement), which I know is working against me as well.
One day at a time!!0 -
Oh dear, stress is a biggy! I hadn't paid attention to how poorly it affected me until last year. Ugh! I do hope whatever is stressing you begins to ease up.
Has anyone done their measurements? I'm curious how we'll do...0 -
Sadly, up this week but it is TOM for me, and the weekend's indulgence is likely sticking with me for a day or two. Back at it today!!0
-
I was too,
, but I am not giving up. I may have to tweak things in my world, but I am not giving up. I had a 1.2 lb gain. Phooey.

I've been way over on my carbs since Saturday- so I'm getting back in the game. No gain for me... but no loss either.0
-
Glad to hear you didn't gain!
I was in for a shocker yesterday...I was invited to go eat at Johnny Carino's Italian last night. Not wanting to completely blow my carb budget, I looked up their nutritional info, which was eye opening. I've been eating so low carb, 20-30g a day. And to see entries all over their menu of 100-200g per serving was woweee crazy.
I ended up with their Tuscan Ribeye with veggies, gave away the serving of spaghetti and marinara to the body builder next to me, Caesar salad and two bites of their Mini Chocolate Cake. That was the first dessert I'd had since January!!! The whole dessert only has 18 carbs. Kudos to the restaurant for having a mini dessert! It was only $2 and I shared it with 4 people. I gave away the ice cream and just had 2 bites of the cake, which was truly warm and yummy. The nice thing is, it didn't seem to affect my blood sugar readings last night or today. (Almost 2 weeks of no diabetes medication and everyday my readings have been normal!!!)0 -
I really hope my weight gain has not discouraged folks from this 30 day challenge. It's been rather quiet in this forum and I'm afraid we've lost folks, which is totally fine. I just hope that it wasn't because of me. Yes, I don't like seeing my weight go up and I don't like being an off example, but I'm not quitting. I think I'm learning that nothing is fast, nothing yanks weight off your body and pounds don't just magically fall off of us. There are so many quotes about fast loss out there, but do we really believe they're true, or do we just hope that we'll be in that magical group of quick losers?
I am at peace with my turtle pace. Even if it's a turtle that takes two steps forward and one step back. In the long run I can honestly say I'm starting to trust myself with foods, trust that cravings don't control me, trust that as long as I keep going, eventually this will keep working. It's okay that it's slow. My brain is keeping up with my body. In total, over oh, about 10 years I've dropped 50 lbs. I have that much more to lose. If overal I keep losing and don't gain back those awful 50, then I feel no matter how slow it is, it's still a success.
Do I feel better? Heck yes! Do I suffer from carb cravings? Nope. Do I like getting into smaller clothes? Oh yeah! Do I love seeing my blood sugar readings come in normal for the first time in 10 years, without medication? YES!
Doing this ketosis way of eating has edged a little farther down the path, slow loss of 6.8 lbs since April 9th. So far, the best reult of this has been seeing my type 2 diabetes begin to be in control without meds. ( I see my Doc next Tues and am actually excited to show him how I've been doing) I'm going to keep going...and if this is right for you, I hope you do too. I respect the fact that there are MANY ways of eating and it's truly all about experimenting til you find what's right for you, what you like and what you can sustain. I'm glad I've found mine0 -
Ok, so stayed the same this week.
As to your wondering if I for one am discouraged or quitting, the answer is no. And I certainly do not blame you, Elaine!
I know there's a lot going on for me this month: work stress, sleep has been off as has been my workouts. But I'm taking it one day at a time. This past week I also *finally* got ketostrips, so I am beginning to look at those once a day (if I remember) to see where I am. So far, it's at trace/none for me, but I've also not been as low in carbs as I know I need to be.
So as for me, I'm using this time to refine what I'm doing and hopefully by the end of this month, will be that much closer to ketosis than I was before, and figure I will try to continue this into the next month and keep going!
I've never been one to drop weight quickly no matter what I do, so as I said, I'm keeping it one day at a time.0
