it seems to come as a "package deal" - start one of these challenges and a big bundle of Mahoosive Black Clouds get delivered ready for the start day! Looking like I'm gonna have to stock up on rule #5 and #9...0

What happened? I thought I signed on to do this as #314. Oh well, I guess I'll wait for the next monthly challenge.0

You did, it's half way down page 2 - you were querying the GPS doohickeys and I answered saying it was fine... unfortunately, I think someone must have copied the list of riders from above your post, and missed you out. I'll drop you in as 314a - no problemo... (it all got a little fraught yesterday afternoon with people getting dragged in from all corners of the board, and rolling their own numbers etc...)

Challenge is open for business everyone - good luck, and don't forget, the "other" thread is for ride details ONLY - any discussion or questions about the running etc. remains in here...0

I'm definitely on a rest day tomorrow (20th) bit of a hard-ride for me today, and the knee is feeling just a little tender0 -
I may wait until later in the week then. While I can't make up for the absence of 309, I can try...0

I suck. I haven't biked all weekend. Or burned any calories, otherwise. Too tired and too stressed over the new semester starting and then I wake up with a sore throat this morning. ARGH. I did drive the team car behind my husband as he did the 9 mile climb today. He should have a lot of elevation meters (esp. per mile!). Plus, we had thundershowers all after noon. <moan>

Our 'little darlings' aren't back for another fortnight yet - shoot me anyway0 -

I was scheduled to have a rest day on 19th, but it was a 182km day, and today was a bit shorter at 155km, so decided to pull a "4 day block" and have a complete rest day today instead... I Should be back on the bike tomorrow though0 -
Like I said, I'm off the bike completely for the 23rd, 24th and the 25th, so I'm hoping to put some miles in the bank yet today!0

Couldn't get my commute in today due to "unseasonable weather" so snuck an hour in after work instead, kept it mainly flat to get my average speed up as this is where my weakness was on the Tour De France Challenge :ohwell:

Yep did 32Km on a nice cool lonely (as in few cars!) night ride, I like these night rides!! I think I might be part vampire:laugh: Since my skin cancer thing I'm not that down on being out in the brutal hot sun for 8+ hours at a time, I'd rather do it in the dark! :drinker:0 -
Hey Yin, I was wondering if you have any kind of running totals for us....?
How are we doing?
Cheers!0 -

I normally try and get a summary sheet out each week - but as a quick update, and subject to lots of people not posting (even though I've asked if they can post "nulls" if there's no ride on a day, just so I can complete things, I've got a couple of figures for general consumption.
team #1 have currently hit the individual daily Km total for the first 3 days riding - and have clocked up a cumulative distance that sees them nearly at the finish of stage #7. That's with at least 6 undeclared rides to be added in.
Team #2 aren't quite on top of things at the moment - currently they've hit days 1 and 3 distance, but are about 80km short for stage #2. Cumulative Km's are looking a little better however, as with 3 days worth of riding in, they're half way through stage 5's cumulative distance. They do have scope to improve their standings however, as there are 13 undeclared rides up to the end of stage 3.
Jerseys - well - #311's in virtual Red at the moment, #316 is back in his usual points jersey, and #311 has also the "horrible blue spotty" KoM shirt, though #307 will have to carry that for him - he can't wear both jerseys at once I hasten to add, all the "jerseys" are "virtual" at the moment - as there are lots of undeclared rides in there - who knows - someone could have spent the weekend in the Alps riding hill repeats on Alpe d'Huez :laugh:0 -
Yin, thanks very much for the info! :drinker:0

No sweat Tom - some days it just has to be done - as I've said umpteen times before, I'm a big believer in the whole "planned rest days" thing in a long term fitness regime (I know we just say "Oh - i'm not TRAINING, i'm just going for a ride on my bike" but if you think about it, how many of the people you meet in a "regular day" are riding their bike, or exercising in some other way for as many hours a week/month as you are ? - Just because (like me!) you're a big lad, doesn't mean that your not an athlete in training! - I know some of the skinny, fit, triathlon and bike racing people will look aghast at that comment, but it's true.)0 -
#316 is back in his usual points jersey0

it's okay for you - at least you have a chance of a jersey mate... I just bimble around - can't get enough time to do the miles for GC, don't have the hills around here to try for the KoM (and I'm still too fat to try anyway!) and even when I hit the flat-stuff last sunday it was all I could do to hold a 25.4Kph average.0

It'll come mate; the more you lose, the better your power to weight ratio will be etc. etc. etc.0 -
I know - it just comes hard to see an average for the ride of 25.4 come up, think "well, that was a good hard 3.5 hours, I'm finally getting somewhere" and then realise that the Garmin was set to Km's... Especially as I felt pretty much as shattered as I used to after riding a 4 hour 100 mile TT :grumble:0

The big difference is, you have had the experience of doing 4 hour, 100 mile TT's. I don't & probably never will. You can only miss what you have once had/experienced...
When I got a bike again in 2011, it was the first time I'd cycled since I was 16. I wish I'd found road cycling at a much younger age so I could've gotten Into it competitively, but alas I guess that wasn't to be. I'm chuffed to bits with the progress I have made so far & I'm striving to improve yet further. When I did my first commute of 13.5 miles & it took me 1h17m, if you'd have told me I will be doing it in 37m less than a year later, I would have laughed in your face!0 -
I'm going to apologize now for my lack of miles. I have really over extended myself and it is finally catching up to me. I have been doing 2 a day work outs all summer long and the legs are toast so I have been cutting back on the miles. Also, I will be off the bike the next weekend for the holiday so no miles for 4 days.0

It's only a fun challenge - it's not life and death if you don't ride - we've people who've signed up and haven't posted a Km yet. It's no biggie - and both teams are actually in-front of the tour distance despite the occasional no-show. My view is if it gets everyone who signed up to the challenge to go out one day extra where they'd have stayed on the couch - or rode that extra couple of blocks on their route home to grab an extra Km here or there, then my aim has been achieved.
I'm in the lucky situation that I actually CAN ride pretty much any day I want to. I have to admit I generally ride "3 on - 1 off" because it fits my training schedule better, but I'm flexible, either with the weather, or (say) if the challenge has a "rest day" on one of my riding days, I'll move the rides around to fit. For example, someone mentioned that they were only able to get a short ride today, but were hopefully doing either a 60mile or Century tomorrow. I was scheduled for a day off today, but rode today, and I'm gonna put my feet up and rest tomorrow instead, and let my team-mate take the strain for a while - and hopefully get out there on sunday and turn in a Metric Century myself...
BUT - that's me - as I said, I'm lucky - my riding isn't constrained by being my commute, or by being a club run, or by being the "sportif" I entered 4 months ago. It's just me, my bike, and a few km's of tarmac. And maybe, just maybe, a large Coffee and a bit of Cake afterwards!
(so - In case anyone missed that on team #1 - I'm not riding tomorrow - over to you )0 -
I'm hoping to ride tomorrow, so I'll try to make up some distance...0
