Professions to stay away from or vice versa

First off, this is meant as fun.
I met a cop last Friday during the rally while out with gf's. I honestly didn't think I'd hear from him since our encounter was short and sweet but he's been calling and texting since yesterday.
I have heard to not date cops. I've heard they're cheaters and use their authority to their advantage. My cousin is married to a police officer and both of them tell me stories.
My ex husband worked in the cable industry as a network/ service specialist. Sometimes he'd make house calls and this was a major way he met desperate housewives and had affairs, like a porn movie.
Have you ever heard of professions to stay away from? Or vice versa...

I wise woman once told me, "Laura, don't date other actors. They will be more dramatic than you are." I should have listened...
The guy I when out with twice that I met at an acting class constantly makes melodramatic posts on Facebook about how lonely he is and how he has no one to talk to... I somehow feel like they are directed at me... I should have deleted him long ago, but I'm scared to... anyway. haha
I have a feeling I will probably go back on my word and date another actor. I seem to be attracted to the "artsy" types...0 -
Ladies,
Avoid the artsy fartsy guys. Cool in the beginning, but you can only wear hemp for so long. Also, hygiene.
Avoid lawyers and accountants. Boring. You may be one, but you're the exception.
Look for the self-made type. Probably owns his own small business, consulting company, etc.
Engineering background is a plus, especially electrical.
Don't trust anyone under 40. He's going to cheat on you.
He should speak two languages minimum.
Should be well traveled, ideally living in a foreign country (adventure, experience).
Sporty type. Perhaps active on an MFP type site.
Over 6 feet. Don't trust the short guys (too much to prove).
Good sense of humor (that's "humour" for Anna).
Just keep looking with that criteria in mind, ladies, and you can't go wrong.

 So, you're into polygamy, then?! If all of us should be looking for you...
Personally, I second the 'avoid the actor' advice, and extend that to musicians/artists/other performers as well (if you are a performer/artist yourself). A) It just gets too much, b) it's nice not to talk shop all the time, c) if the whole household's income is that unpredictable, it causes stress and d) in every two-performer relationship I've ever seen, one person's career inevitably suffers, and more often than not, it's the woman's. If you're not a performer, then it's up to you how much uncertainty and intensity you can handle!
Other than that, I think it's about individual preference. I'm a worrier, so someone whose job puts them in danger all the time wouldn't be ideal for me.0 -

Actually, I know you're being 'humourous!' BUT I kind of agree with you. Apart form the over 40 bit, as over 40 guys can be bitter and twisted and painfully self righteous and boring!! (present company excepted )
Additionally, I agree with avoiding musicians - My Dad was one and had one affair after another!
Also, as well as policemen, I've always avoided the military!! (No offence to any military personnel, its just I need someone who's around).

I've heard to stay away from Doctors or lawyers...
I haven't particularly dated a certain type of guy in terms of his profession or anything like that.
My first relationship was with a personal trainer, who cheated on me for half of our relationship. My second was with a pharmacy tech who was also in med school. And my third was with a painter (commercial buildings and such). There were smaller "relationships" (casual dating) in between these ones with guys ranging from law student to college professor to at & t tech. It's all over the map!0 -
I would stay away from gogo dancers, strippers, and bartenders.0

What? Me? Wow, I didn't even notice that... Good catch...

I'd say this describes << 1% of all available men in the world.
I do agree on avoiding artsy guys who are under 40. They are easily avoidable. Also, the only guys I've met who have an engineering degree and speak two languages are all Chinese or Indian.. and they are well under 6 feet tall (and don't have much of a sense of humor).0 -
I think the only one I have ever been warned about is Army guys ... but that was when I was younger. People would always say .. they usually have someone back at home. And because we lived about 30 minutes from the base.
I would tell my daughter, if I had one, to stay away from construction workers ..lol. They typically drink a lot.0 -
I always was told to stay away from military guys.......and did until my mid 20's when I met and then married a Navy guy. See how that worked out...........
And, all professions have stereotypes. Construction workers, I think, get a bad rap....I used to think they were all trouble, but now that I work for a construction company......they are mostly great guys. Many of them are single, very involved dads, family guys and we have ONE guy that has been in jail, but all others are high caliber guys.............0 -
I avoid cops...was married to one (military police) and have dated a couple. They have a hard shell and it's very hard to get close with them.
Salesmen....I'm very picky when it comes to salesmen because some of them just can't turn it off and I feel like they're constantly trying to sell themselves to me.
I agree with the artsy guys.....just not my cup of tea.
Widows. I really hate to say that. But, I've dated two and ended up being hurt in the end. Both were great men that loved their wives dearly. Thought they were ready to move on. I dated one of them for 3 months before he just stopped talking with me abruptly. Never returned a call, never emailed. Just told me he didn't love me and that was that. The other, I went on one date with and the whole time he talked about and compared me to her the whole time....both had been widowed about a year. So...no widows.0 -
Avoid young, beautiful, childless, party girls. . . Unless you are just looking for fun. .then seek out young, beautiful, childless, party girls. But. .if you are looking for a wife. . they are a bad bet. . trust me.0

Never really heard of specific advice, but I would normally avoid hairdressers, make up artists, PAs, secretary, etc. all those jobs where the women are likely to be too girly for me!0 -
Ooh fun game!!
From personal experience...
Avoid military types..especially when overseas. Pretty much all married or divorced with major baggage. Stereotype yes..true 9/10 times.
Avoid university professors. Oh intelligence is sexy, but you have no idea how they can go on and on and on about the most boring of details regarding their work...and they really lack in social skills and graces. Sigh.
Agree with widows. It is heartbreaking...particularly if you happen to be the kind of nurturing individual who wants to help them love again...save yourself the time and emotional exhaustion.
Men involved in highly nurturing jobs who focus on children or excel at domestic skills. Yup, he will pick the kids or the dog over you and it won't feel good.
Cops and lawyers are hot. I like both but I think I have a little authority fetish! Agree they can be a little arrogant or hard to get to know...but I kinda dig that..0 -

Yeah, I agree. I avoid widows too. Seems to me that they'll never replace the love of their life. Although, I dont think that my logic is logical!! :laugh:0 -
Just go for country/farm guys...you can`t go wrong and they can say it in just one sentence.0

What if he actually murdered his first wife? Seems like he'd be over her, almost by definition, and would hence be acceptable to date. Might be an insurance windfall as a bonus. Hello, honeymoon in Thailand!

Yes, Mr & Mrs Jen & Carl Peeps got married in the 'self destruct' thread yesterday. It was a lovely ceremony, we all cheered and cried and threw confetti. Sorry you missed it!! :bigsmile:0 -

I agree with avoiding the military (dated a few that were not cheaters just emotionally distant, worked with a bunch that were cheaters), musicians (gets boring listening to the same thing over and over), men still in collage (don’t know where they are headed in life), pipe liners (haven’t dated any but worked up close and personal with their cheating *kitten*) & professors (agree with above description). But also avoid people that believe they are more intelligent than everyone else, or men that believe they are in some way entitled, avoid men that stand to inherit money.0

I avoid men who work do lower tier social work, case manage kids, juvenile parole/probation. I come into to contact with these guys a lot, and almost without fail they are personal space invaders and completely sleazy.
Have had some bad experiences with being talked down to by science/math industry guys, but still try to keep an open mind.0 -
I think teachers are generally a safe bet. They seem to be good with communication, conflict resolution, and they tend to be good with kids. They seem to get a sick a lot though since they are around so many germs.
I definitely try to stay away from strippers, bartenders, and anybody that works nights. I've never dated a lawyer but I feel like they would e pretty argumentative and use it to their advantage. I'm friends with a lot of doctors and all they seem to talk about anymore is doctor stuff. Outside of the medical industry they have no social skills.0 -
