The definition of "curvy" changed when Internet dating caught on and people were given a drop-down box to select their appearance. I have a ton of respect for everyone on MFP who is working to improve their health and make good decisions, but overweight is overweight.

Whether people think you sounded like a jerk or not, I am glad you posted this.

When guys say they want a "curvy" girl, it seems like they are specifically thinking of your Beyonce type fit woman with tiny waist in comparison to her hips and chest.

It seems like on a dating site most people (men and women) interpret "curvy" to mean overweight.

Also, my experience has shown that because most fit, flat stomached, curvy girls aren't a size 16, most guys are really shocked when they see my pictures and read my profile. They just aren't expecting someone of my size. Yes, they've said this to my face and/or texted it. So I'm not making it up.

This is why I'm surprised the OP of that other post had such a bad experience. A man who wouldn't want a curvy girl of her size usually wouldn't approach a woman who lists herself as "curvy."

On that note: which of these women are curvy? All? Some? None? Share thoughts!

All of the above look just fine.
This is almost getting annoying because it seems (maybe I am wrong) that many of the ladies here only want to be told that the pic in the OP is heavy which I take it to mean undesirable.
    That is nonsense.

As to what Janie just posted I will say it again,I have met you in person,God knows I am an average built guy in height and stature and to me you were little with not a thing wrong with you.

For the record, I think all four of those ladies are drop dead gorgeous and would happily prance about in minimal clothing had I any of their bodies.

    yup!

I would never wear clothes. Just be naked all the time.

Well sometimes you would have to put on a shirt and shoes to get some grocery shopping done, but they didn't say anything about pants - or how much the shirt had to cover ;)

Hahaha yeah I might end up getting arrested.

And I do agree that nobody is disputing anyone's looks, just the definition of curvy.

Kits. I am in bed on my phone now. But I wanted to say that the girl in pink is definitely not in my curvy category. She is obese :indifferent:

Hmmm! Maybe number 1 at a push.

    2 is too straight

3 not enough waist to hip ratio

4 I would describe as slim

I agree they all have lovely figures tho

Not being snarky but if a lady (or guy) is attractive and appealing who gives a rats *kitten* what the exact definition of their body is.

It is because curvy in online dating speak has turned into overweight. None of use are saying one way is better then the other just trying to get the correct definition.

There is no correct definition anymore then there is one for a guy to be fit/athletic/average etc.
Some have an honest interpretation of their body and others not,it will never change I suppose and really does not speak to whether a person is desirable or not.

I feel like I am on an iceberg here for some reason.

I agree, what each of us considers curvy isnt something we will likely solve in this forum. My personal experience is that clearly obese people use the term curvy in online dating sites to avoid saying full figured or bbw. Hence when I see someone list themselves as curvy, unless they have a clear full body shot straight on and not from some weird angle I pass the profile by so as not to exhaust myself thinking I am meeting someone Im attracted to who in reality turns out to be "not my version of curvy"

edited because I keep screwing up the quote boxes.

I guess the reality is that the definition of curvy has changed, for good online, and now by extension offline.
If I'm honest, I came to the conclusion a while ago that the word has been "polluted" by people.
It has lost its meaning and has now become the plainest, most tasteless politically correct pile of crap one can use to describe themselves - which screams that you are overweight.
(I feel sorry for the real curvy girls who now have officially lost the possibility of describing their body shape accurately)

Clearly we are not going to "solve" for the "definition" of "curvy" in this forum alone, you can tell by my use of quotes in this sentence alone... but it's still fun to debate! At least for me, because I spent far too much time on the speech and debate team! Hahah!

Also, yes, Mesha, I got that image of the four girls from an underwear campaign that strives to use "real" girls as models. It was a competition as "curvy Kate" and those four girls were the winners voted on by the customers. Again, I think all those women are wonderfully gorgeous, I just wanted to use it to further our personal thread debate of curvy because it seemed fun :3

Having spent the whole night awake thinking about this............. This is my definition:

Curvy = bigger than average boobs, smaller than average waist, bigger than average hips! All in proportion in an hourglass figure.

    Plus, on a scale of 1 - 10, if 1, 2 & 3 are skinny/slim/athletic and 9 & 10 are obese+ then curvy would sit anywhere between 4 and 8. The OP illustration as being 8 on the scale.

Plus, curvy women are natural, obvious, of substance, presence, sexy (I was reading somewhere that, to a man, seeing a curvy woman is like taking a drug! A natural high!)

I was thinking, I actually don't know any naturally curvy women IRL!! So, I dont think its a common figure at all and totally agree it's overused on dating sites :flowerforyou:

This sounds bang on to me! A defined waist and generous 'curves' above and below, in proportion to the waistline. It is possible to be both clinically overweight and 'curvy' - people carry weight in different ways. Even at my heaviest, I was always fairly proportionate. Also, our definition of 'overweight' is, in my opinion, too wide (no pun intended:laugh: ) - clinically 'overweight' can actually be a very healthy, normal weight for some physical types (and can look pretty hot, too  ). If I were to achieve BMI 'normal' weight for my height, I'd have no muscle and no curves left - the official number's a good 25-30lbs below my ultimate, realistic, slim-on-my-frame goal - not so 'healthy', really. Where I am now, I'm on the cusp between overweight and obese in BMI terms, and I've got, at most, 20-25lbs to spare, which will still put me in the middle of the 'overweight' category if I lose it all, without any muscular gain (unlikely!).

I have self-described as 'curvy' in the past, albeit not on dating sites, because I always have been reasonably shapely - heavy or less so. That's the way I'm built. I'll always be curvaceous, and larger than the average girl with it (Janie, my sympathies!) - I have a big ribcage, wide shoulders and wide pelvis - it's just a matter of how much curve, and what those curves look like to the world - voluptuous a la Sophia Loren/Kate Winslet/Jayne Russell, or on a fleshier scale - a 5/6 or an 8 on your scale, Anna! I do agree though that the meaning of 'curvy' has morphed from the traditional meaning to something else - curvy in all directions, maybe! - in the general conception of its' meaning.

Yes, MOST women have curves to a lesser or greater degree! What I think I'm saying is that, to me, a 'curvaceous' woman has accentuated curves, with attitude!

So, what did you think the definition was before the internet?

And what IS 'overweight' in your eyes?

As Florian suggested, can a woman be seen as 'curvy' with less than 16% body fat? Or even less than 25%??

And dont feel bad for speaking your truth :flowerforyou:

You see that 10-foot pole lying in the corner over there? It's going to stay there, because I wouldn't even use that to type in a reply here. :)

My ex should have had one of those!

I found it daunting to use one of the descriptions on the drop-down menu when I signed up for match.com.

What's a few pounds overweight or curvy or very overweight? how does one know how one is viewed by another person.

In the end I put up a full body picture of myself. Apparently it was OK, because I had many responses, even some non- creepers

I did learn fast not to say I was newly single at 50. There is a whole section of society set aside for 30 yr old dudes seeking that first..... Er whatever.

Sorry to get so far off subject! I think curvey is proportionate. My friend was low BF when I met her and was JLo curvy. As she gained 30 pounds she never really looked fat.

As I'm looking at all the pics posted and all the comments made, the only thing I have to say is that if I looked like ANY of these women when I had a 27 BMI, I wouldn't have lost weight. They are proportioned, all my weight was in my butt, stomach and hips. Ok, maybe not the one in the pink that Kitsune posted (sorry, she's really large). All those women in the underwear ad look better than I do now at a 20 BMI and 22% BF (I guess that's the magic of air-brushing, huh?). Other than maybe the one the blue (her tummy is a bit much). They are all gorgeous though.

I have to agree that "Curvy" is an over used word in our culture - some feel the word is a cover up word for fat, some to describe people like JLo, Beyonce, Scarlett Johanson and the red-head from "Mad Men".

I'm 5'9 and curvy. I was curvy at 226 pounds and I was curvy at 175(smallest I've ever been). I have broad shoulders lose weight on the side of my waist first and thanks to the spanish side of my family big boobs, butt and hips. I'm an hourglass. True curviness is about the way your bones are positioned in your body especially your hips. I think the word curvy has been abused a little by people just not wanting to admit they are heavy. Remeber curvy should curve in not out

so, if you look at my backside, like my profile pic, what would you consider me?
i never fill that part out. i just post a pic or send one if requested. because i've been told that even AVERAGE is a bad thing to put down!!!!!

i mean, it's like if you can ONLY fill in slender/ thin, you're golden. if you can't, you're screwed.

i don't want to put athletic and then have someone disappointed because i'm not 18% body fat......... i figure it would be average or curvy, and of course i think i'm over weight, so i could mark could lose a few pounds, etc. since i have no idea, i just mark NOTHING, LOL!!!!!!

I think there is slender curvy (beyonce or shakira), thick-meaty curvy (me  -size 12 and 5'8.5), then BBW curvy (rare).

Curvy is a woman who's body literally curves which is caused by a defined waist.
