Will They Last?

This week, Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder proposed to his girlfriend, ESPN reporter Samantha Steele (www.usatoday.com/story/gameon/2012/12/04/samantha-steele-christian-ponder-engaged/1746139/). Ponder and Steele had been seeing each other since September-early October.

To me, that is an unusually short amount of time from meeting until proposal.

So, will it last? My gut says no.

Both are quite desirable as mates. Ponder is a starting QB for an NFL team. NFL money is good money.

Samantha Steele is not only blessed with good looks, but her job brings her a lot of money too. That brings lots of attention from men. And sideline reporter was mentioned in the thread "Professions to Avoid" in this group forum in a thread a while back.

Thoughts?

We all know celebs have a harder time with relationships then the average person. To much scrutiny. Personally I think this is too fast but it also depends on how much time they plan on waiting til the wedding. I had a male friend who did this and they were married within 6 months and seperated within 1 yr and then divorced.

It COULD happen, but I don't think it looks good.

In my opinion, couples need to make it through the holidays TWICE before they should think about getting married. Since the holidays are so stressful and there is so much exposure to each other's families.

I'd guess they probably wont even make it through Christmas.

As always, I'm amused how you break down relationships as though they are fact based as opposed to emotional situations.

I agree with Jen that they probably won't last but it has more to do with their supposed 'celebrity' status than anything else.

This one is tough to call. He's 24, she's 26.. both are very successful and have more money than God (figuratively speaking).

I'm surprised that he wants to get married at such a young age. From what I've seen, most successful actors, musicians, and athletes usually want to "sow their wild oats" and live a crazy lifestyle of beautiful women, fast cars, mansions, etc etc. Maybe Christian Ponder is different and wants to settle down early.

Do you think living a more settled lifestyle would make you a better football player? Instead of the late nights of coke, hookers, and booze.. you're at home relaxing with wifey. I've never looked into it, but I have a feeling some of the better athletes have gotten married during their playing days and didn't live a crazy lifestyle.

I truly don't think they will last until the wedding. I think he is under too much pressure to preform right now seeing he might be benched. Add to that the stress of the wedding and every day life. I think he just got the wedding bug because I know one of his friends just got married.

I don't think sucess of reationships have anything to do with how long they have been together as I have a friend that was engaged after 3 months, married in 1 year and have been together 11 years now. While my sister was with her ex 6 years got married and divoriced in 10 months.

I think that based on "celebrity" statistics, there's not a chance in hell.

However, I'm learning more about people that had short courtships that have lasted the test of time. It will depend on how serious they are about the marriage and if they are actually committed to putting in the time and effort needed.

I'll never forget Wilt Chamberlain's last interview on Larry King Live before he passed away. Larry asked him about his claim that he's been with over 20,000 women and when is "enough enough" for him.

Wilt said he always felt insufficient with the ladies because he started so late in life. He grew up a lanky, awkward kid who never touched a girl until he was a basketball star in college. He felt had to spend the rest of his life compensating for the lack of women in his life at a young age.. this resulted in him sleeping with 2-3 different women every day during his entire NBA career.

So, whenever I hear people criticize a young man for still being a virgin throughout high school. I always think of Wilt and how if this young man ever turns it around and becomes successful and good looking.. he's going to become an absolute monster when it comes to breaking women's hearts.

So a word of advice.. be VERY wary of "late bloomers".

Be wary of late bloomer millionaire sports stars. Late bloomer accountants and engineers just have even less sex than average...

Celebrities or not I don't know these people. In fact, I've never even heard of either of them before today and really couldn't care less.

Fact is some people make it work and some don't. It's useless to try and analyze whether or not it'll work out because none of us are functioning with information of substance.

    Hows that for concise.

This B*tch needs to go! She's f*cking up my team. He starts off on a roll leading the Vikings on a potential playoff run and then little miss sidelines comes along and he throws for 50 yards with two interceptions?? I don't think the question is will they last but will he make it out of Minnesota with his life (<--- this is not intended as a threat).

When I posted this question, I thought of you since I know you like the Vikings.

I don't think hot babes ruin a sports player.

Here's a question to re-focus the discussion: Would any of you guys propose to a woman after knowing her approx 2-3 months? What about the ladies? Would you accept a proposal after only 2-3 months?

The logical side of me says no and I think that the odds of that being correct far outweigh the 1 in whatever chance it would be a mistake.
Still, unless standing in those shoes one never knows but would hope to be reasonable.

    I think she's pregnant...just my gut feeling.

I also think that as a reporter, dating one of her "sources" immensely discredits her.

Not necessarily so on the pregnancy Christine.

Female sports reporters have a history of having "relationships" with athletes.

Every Viking fan I know (my parents to name a couple) want Ponder gone and his head on a stick!! Everyone was on the Ponder bandwagon at the beginning of the season. Kinda feel for the kid --his best WR is out, the others just plain suck. The Vikings didn't really make any changes to help the team. Rudolph has some promise. I hope he would be able to separate his love life and football and play. I didn't know he was engaged.

I think they will be OK with a short or long engagement. I don't know who she is and Ponder just isn't playing well enough to be that well known. He's close to being a nobody on the bench if he doesn't improve. I had to Google her. Never heard of her.

I'd say it was doomed if he pulled a Romo and was dating celebrities like Carrie Underwood and Jessica Simpson and on every freaking tabloid. Or a Miles and date a Kardashian (Austin hasn't played a whole season since). As fans we don't like it. We called all of them curses!! Romo's wife was flashed A LOT on the TV last Sunday night. She better hope he has a good game this week or she's next and she's not a nobody by any means. Her brother is the celebrity in the family though.

When my players were dating celebrities I knew about it whether I wanted to or not. I didn't read up on this stuff, but hell it's on CNN, and every person I knew would ask me something about who they were dating. And I really heard about it when they played bad! Even when my dog went to get his nuts chopped off (his name is Romo) they joked and said, is Jessica going to be OK with this? The VET said that!

I would possibly say yes after 2-3 months. The romantic, love at first sight side of me says sure, but the brainy, logical part of me says that's not long enough to know someone to say YES!! I have a friend that got engaged after only knowing the guy 2 WEEKS!! They are happily married and she is pregnant with their 4th kid. They met on a blind date and she went in flannel pants and no makeup. She said she wasn't feeling up to going, but didn't want to cancel. Not the attire I would choose for a first date. Ha!
