Deadlifts

hey thekyleo - I run 4-5 days a week and lift weights 3 days a week, including some leg work! You can do it!
If anything I've noticed running is really great for loosening everything up the day after a lift day. But I also only have 1 or maybe 2 hard/speed/tempo type runs in a week. I try to keep all the other ones easy or at least mid-level effort, or just do longer runs where I am sort of forced to go at an easier pace.
Also I just did 3 sets of 8 deadlifts last night at 90 lbs (doing NROLW). Might not be up to the same numbers many of you are at, but that is a new record for me! :drinker: LOVE the deadlifts! My legs are sore today, but it is because lunges. Ugh I hate lunges. But I will keep doing them anyways, since they are good for my legs.
Ok call me stupid, but is deadlift for your back or legs?
Both, It hits your posterior chain mostly - hamstrings, glutes, lower back but also a host of other muscles, including core and lats. It is less quad dominant than squats.0 -
I run alot too, but i don't work out when i am sore, so if my legs are sore and it's leg days, i skip it
sometimes, but nothing near weightlifting does to my legs0 -
thanks for all the advice... i think i need to lower my reps and sets and raise my weight a little more... i am keeping the bar right against my legs and i think my squat is right so i will give it another go tomorrow and see what happens
Thanks for the link sara i will check it out0 -
This link offers excellent tips and advice for the Dead Lift as well as other compound lifting exercises. It is based on Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength program and includes links to videos. Even though I am doing Strong Lifts I have found this to be a valuable resource.

I really like Rips deadlift tutorials.0 -
Just a note as no one has said anything, but make sure when you get past your knees you're squeezing your butt like you're trying to not poop on the way home. (or insert a more favorable simile here.)0

Ditto, but not so much sore as just worn out from a good run.
And compared to lifting the day after rest day, it's very evident the muscles are tired the day after too hard a run or biking session, so almost not worth it if you can't really press that hard and get the benefits of it.
What you can also do is see how the schedule can be adjusted to benefit from good strong lifting as mentioned, but still have strong run or bike in there.
During summer where I want a full-on fun long bike ride, I'd have rest day proceed it, so Friday.
Sat long ride or run, Sun optional if Sat rain.
Sun was then lifting upper body, then short active recovery jog.
Mon was then lower lifting, and swimming for upper recovery.
Tue rest day.
Wed was good aerobic zone run. If too intense, it affected lower lifting the next day. Never affected HIIT or hill sprints usually.
Thu was upper lifting and HIIT or hill sprints, or full body lifting.
Fri rest.
Now even with that schedule I'd eventually notice lower lifting getting harder as muscles just wore out, or that faster run got slower at same HR. Bike usually not effected to same degree.
But that meant time for a rest week usually.0 -

Well done!! Progress is progress - it is not important what someone else is doing...what is important is that you are doing the best you can and that you are making progress.
I hate lunges also.
Thanks for the encouragement, I do feel like a newbie sometimes with all the heavy weights other folks are posting. Also, I am glad to know the disdain for lunges is shared by others :explode: :laugh:0 -
Update today was my second time trying deadlifts... today was great i did a weight of 105lbs 5 sets with 5 reps. I had my boyfriend spot me this time and he said my form was great. I am sure i will be feeling it tomorrow0

I'm doing that program also. The lunges are killer. As for deadlifts, my gym's heaviest barbell is only 60 pounds. I'm already doing that. It seems my only other option is to use the "smith machines' (?) everyone warns me against. I already have to use it to do squats as my gym also does not have a regular squat rack. :grumble: ( nor does it have balance balls or a step in the weight room) STUPID INADEQUATE GYM!!!0
