In honor of Basketball and our own Mad Hatters I am officially starting this topic.
A big NSV for me. Day 5 of 5:30am workout complete. Kendra Kemerly has become my friend whether she knows it or not. I am so happy to see Friday on the calendar, that means I can rest my poor tired muscles on Saturday. We may see a workout on Sunday (I hope) to get me kick started for next week. I don't think I have ever done any exercise 5 days in a row. Thanks to all of you, Cassie and my own self worth for getting this going. I am looking forward to June, July and August! I have a ladies night out tonight with a great friend. What are your plans for the weekend?

ROFL.. so our topic is "Madness" .. or basketball??
I can TOTALLY post on madness... not sure about basketball.. except I'm pretty sure it was invented by a Canadian LOL!!
Will be back in a bit have a few appts this morning - so happy to welcome March and looking forward to SPRING (she says as she looks out onto six feet of snow!) :bigsmile:0 -
Can a mod edit my topic? It should read Women with a history of March madness.
Sorry Carol, I completely forgot about the Women of History month. Around here at work it is all about the NCAA. We have a pool going and I have won a few years. My way of picking the teams to win is.....wait for it......What name sounds the best in the 2 opposing teams....The guys here can't figure it it and I don't tell them. They think I really "know" basketball.....
As for my Hero....
I would have to say all of you lovely ladies. With you I can be myself, whether its good bad or otherwise. I have found more love and compassion from all of you in such a short time than I have ever felt in my life from another woman.
Thanks to my Heroines!0 -
My mom. Strongest and most heroic woman I've ever known... :flowerforyou:0

Hey there Snoozie. If you got to canyonranchrecipes.com and click under side dishes, they have some very healthy and
tasty recipes. So does cookinglight.com0 -
thanks Seehe! heading there right now to check them out.. I never have a problem picking a protein its the sides that I get bored with lol!
Tonights dinner is chicken breast, tziki sauce and a greek salad! I may even eat the olives as I'm trying to learn to like them... but haven't quite succeeded yet!:sad:0 -
Good luck with the olives Snooozie. I can not learn to like them. "Olives look like eye balls" has long been a saying of mine.
Great choice on heros Seehe.0 -
I'm with snooze, My hero would be my mother then my grandmother! Two people I couldn't of sucessed without!. Just wish my daughters could of known my grandmother an amazing lady.
Also, Tonya great job staying with the exersice! Keep it going !0 -
Good Morning ladies,
I actually worked out again yesterday so that made it 6 days in a row. Today, I am resting....although my day is looking to be calorific so I may get a walk in.
Veggie sides, roasted brussel sprouts...little EVOO, pepper and balsamic, toss and roast on 350 for about 25 minutes or so.
Spaghetti squash, kabocha squash asparagus, black beans.
Today is chili for us with black, kidney and pinto beans...:blushing: you know what that means...lol
I am looking for ways to up my fiber. I can't seem to get enough even with the raw veggies I have added in this week. Suggestions are welcome.
I hope you all have a great day!0 -
I'm interested in the Med. diet, too. Studies show reduced cardiac problems long-term. I'll take it. Here's an easy tzatziki, recipe from Weight Watchers. SO! good with pita chips: http://www.weightwatchers.com/food/rcp/RecipePage.aspx?recipeId=66201. The whole family loved it. I won't be around til the end of the week. I'm flying to FL to sit through depositions for a couple of 12-16 hour days. Lucky me.
Have a good - or at least better - week!

So, I've been thinking....
My heroes are: my mom (of course - she's in heaven now), Mrs. March - from 3rd grade - she lived 1 block over from me growing up and I still have fond memories, Mrs. Hunt - High School English Teacher and I can't remember her name... but my nurse from High School - always had an encouraging word.....
And of Course all the Mad Hatter Ladies - WE ROCK! Keep on Keepin on....whether you zumba, run, walk, bike, do step class, body pump or play tennis... we'll worry about the calorie counts later... Just glad we keep improving day by day....:flowerforyou:
Carol0 -
Tonya - thanks for the side dish ideas!! love em! Re the fibre; if you can eat fruit, pears and blackberries are super high in fiber, and there is something you can buy like in the form of Crystal light (individual single packets) if you will, but jthey are just fibre.. dissolves totally in water with no taste or anything and its fiber (non soluable).. I remember when my doc said I should be eating at least 25 grams of fiber a day after a problem in a certain area lol.... i googled foods with the highest fiber content or something.. and i remember pears and blackberries being right up there but can't remember the rest altho I think nuts and seeds were big on the list too ( and huge IPOU on 6 days of workout without missing a beat... SO proud of you girl!!
Kobie - at least you're going somewhere warm for a few days... altho 14-16 hr days you might not get to see the sun but will keep fingers crossed you get a glimpse!! thanks for the heads up you'll be away for a few! Thanks for the recipe LOVE tziki (even if i cant spell it)!
Carol - agree absolutely about keeping up with the "moving" in some form... although I'm enjoying the class I feel I have to kick up the "moving" to help level out my blood sugar.. have been resistant to the physical aspect but read a good article today that helped me get in the right mindset again... and took some of the pressure i've been putting on myself off too which helps surpringly even more.. will post the link in case anyone else seems to have found their physical motivation waning (or ebbing and flowing as it says lol)
http://zenhabits.net/get-off-your-butt-16-ways-to-get-motivated-when-youre-in-a-slump/
gotta go back cause I think i missed a few things I wanted to say.... but... having a mentlepause moment so I can't remember lol0 -

Popcorn is a wonderful source of fiber!
It is an appropriate time to think about the women who are my heroes, it is the 100th anniversary of the suffragettes march on Washington to demand the vote. The first will always be my mother who taught me by example more than by anything she ever told me. Instead of giving my list which would certainly include SeeHee's picks, because of things that have happened in the last year, my heroes are those nurses who are dedicated to doing their best to keep us healthy, from the nurses who help the tiniest babies survive in the neonatal care units, to those who help young adults with chemo, to those who meet the ambulances with accident victims and to those who help the elderly die with dignity, my family has needed them all and I am so grateful and in awe of the work that they do (don't mean to slight nurse Jim who is an amazing neonatal nurse, but the rest that have helped my family have been women.) that is why they are my heroes.
I am ready to get back to work tomorrow and hoping I can exercise by Tuesday. Hope your week is filled with healthy choices and a little March Madness!0 -
My YAY scale arrived today, and I weighed in as "Adorable" LOL

Good Morning Ladies,
A big NSV for me today as Cassie overslept and I still did a workout this morning! I feel like I am really back in the groove.
Thanks Snoozie for the list of high fiber foods. Thankfully I like a lot of them
Hair, I love popcorn I will have to incorporate more of it into my diet. It is hard since we get grief for cooking it at work.
Seehe, Yippee on the scale, I have a WW digital and like it pretty well except on the days it tells me I gained.....
I have to say there is a woman I admire greatly...Her name is Pat and she is one of my friends Mom. She is the woman that I wish my Mom could have been. She is kind, caring and loving to all. She even takes those that aren't hers and makes them her own.
I hope all of you have a great day!0 -
Morning Hatters!
How's life with the Hatters going? I know I can't wait til this snow is gone and spring is in sight - it's supposed to go up to 8 Celsisus this weekend... wooo hoo (yes I know for some of you it's no big dance of joy lol.. but we'll take what we can get!
That article about 16 ways to get off your butt and get your motivation back I posted about.. dunno if anyone had a chance to read it but it really helped me take the pressure off myself for not exercising more.. and yet also managed to get me motivated to do more LOL.. i think the part about the ebb and flow of motivation really helped me realize its normal to lose it now and then.. took a lot of the guilt off.. and the baby steps towards exercise helped too.. so while the yoga isnt a huge calorie burner, I am finding I enjoy it and it gets me moving every day. So my March goal is to try to do just that.. incorporate some kind of movement every day...
Today was my weight day - I'm up 3 ounces LOL.. but will not be changing my numbers for that.. I fully expect it to be gone with a little more by next week
Hope all is well with the rest of the Hatters... a few quick notes before I get my butt into gear for the day:
Tonya - wayyyy to go girl.. you are totally in the groove and im so happy for ya!!! Congrats on the loss btw.. you totally earned it!! well done!
Gail you have totally stepped up the exercise these past few weeks.. so proud of you my friend!!
Kobie - hope your flight got away ok and the days arent too long!
Janet - so glad you're feeling better and were smart to tone it back a bit for your first class! I still can't do a plank yet (or an upward dog lol.. find both are way too hard on my shoulder which has a rotator cuff injuury I never went for therapy for and should have). but I WILL be able to do both at some point and often think of you saying when you started you couldnt do one.. and now look at ya.. so you continue to inspire me!
Seehe: every time I see your name I still see the pic of the little desert rat LOL!! love your new scale btw.. and nice to see one that is totally accurate - you are indeed adorable!!
Tammy - hope you're not having too busy a week; love that salads are now available for you at school..!
Carol - never tried pilates but heard its freat for flexibility and blanace.. both of which i sadly lack.. i topple a lot in yoga class still lol.. but in my quest to open my self up to new things perhaps i'll give it a go sometime!
Today is my big day to try okra btw lol.. got the recipe from gail so i just have to get my derriere up and dressed and out to the store!
Have a great day Hatters!! andtry to do something good for yourselves today.. we deserve it!!0 -
Tonya, most people who cook popcorn at work, use the bags. Those popcorn bags have too many chemicals. I know airpopping is best, but I make mine at home on the stovetop with Smart Balance Omega, a canola and olive oil mix. And since I am promoting popcorn, I thought I would quote a recent U of Scranton study. Popcorn is filled with "Antioxidants - you hear about them all the time. They help out with anti-cancer things. They eliminate free radicals in your body.Popcorn is also 100 percent whole-grain. It's the only food that's 100 percent whole-grain, and the fact that it has antioxidants has good health benefits for you,"It's the ideal snack," Dr. Vinson said . "It's the king of snacks."In another surprising finding, the researchers discovered that the hulls of the popcorn - the part that everyone hates for its tendency to get caught in the teeth - actually has the highest concentration of polyphenols and fiber."
So eat your popcorn-hulls and all!
Snoozie, congrats on checking out a new veggie-okra! The only time I eat it is in a Gumbo that someone else makes because I never learned how.
Time2-your steps have inspired me. In Baltimore, one of the big signs of spring is the Flower Mart, which I love because big hats are always fashionable there. Anyway, the Washington Monument is open on that day and the only way to the top is up the steps. I am going to follow your example and start going up and down the steps at work, so that when the Flower Mart happens, I will be able to walk all the way to the top of the circular steps without needing oxygen!
****Hatters, what is your non-weight goal of something that you couldn't do and you can or will be able to do (or do better) as a result of fitness gains?0 -
Snoozie,
Yesterday's instructor almost killed me.... and she was making fun of the size of my ball - didn't have the heart to tell her it's not the size of the ball but what you do with it..... and yes....giggle / snort..... :blushing:
And she had the nerve to put yoga in the mix... but did it and didn't fall over.... :noway:
BTW - it was a substitute instructor... that's what I get for being gone from class for 2 weeks...
Good luck with the okra.... never had - let us know how it turns out... more of a spinach girl myself...
Anyway... make today count...we deserve it!:flowerforyou:

Looking for 2-4 inches of snow overnight... right now it's raining cats and dogs....0 -

The Philadelphia Flower Show is going on now.... thru the 10th of March... the theme is "Brilliant"... and they are honoring all things British - there is an article posted from the Baltimore Sun....

Ladies,
I need your advice on something. I now have family coming out of the woodwork. 2nd and 3rd cousins I haven't seen in 30 years are now wanting to be my friend on Facebook because they saw Mom's obit. I have nothing in common with these people other than a little DNA.
They want details and things that 1) If they wanted they could have known (but like me chose to leave her alone) and 2) I don't want to have to tell them I don't anything more than they do or explain our lack of relationship for the last 10 years.
I just don't know how to respond I guess.
Grrrrr, it pisses me off that I am so right about things. I knew this would happen. I just want to be left alone in my happy world but feel obligated to at least acknowledge the request for information.0 -
Carol - we had a fill in instructor last week who was a total witch... she was mean LOL.. and not in a good "motivate" you way.. and a little condescending with the remarks.. we were all kinda looking at each other and thinking omg thru the workout... and she just kept talking and talking during the yoga part.. our reg instructor is awesome that way very quiet and soothing voice instructing as you go in the yoga.. and very up and inspiring on the aerobics...very positive.... on the way out one of the woman said to her friend thank god the fill in chick wasn't here the first night - i'd never have come back! And my friends and I were nodding right along with - have learned the instructor is an integral part of how hard you work and want to work lol!!
and huge congrats on not toppling.. I still lose my balance a lot but that's why im there to improve it lol... but I've noticed my friends put their mats a little further away from me now.... :sad:0 -
T,
I don't do Facebook, but there's nothing in the rules that says you have to hit the accept button.... You don't need the extra stress.0 -
Great Idea, with planning ahead for the steps at the flower mart, Janet...It will be tough at first, but you'll get better every day...and your posterier portion will thank you...It willbe uplifted!!!0
-
Carol, I was only able to go to the Philadelphia Flower show one year, it was amazing and wish I could get there this year to see all the Brilliant British things! It was almost as much fun as Epcot Flower Power! Are you going?
Tonya, I don't do Facebook, so I don't really know the etiquette, but you don't owe these relatives anything, and you do not need to friend them. It doesn't sound like you are comfortable just ignoring them- maybe you could do a standard response-"Thanks for your condolences at this difficult time. Perhaps after more time passes, I will be more comfortable discussing these issues. For right now, my immediate family needs my full attention. When that changes I will be sure to get in touch with you.Best wishes, Tonya" Then you can just delete any unwanted follow up.
T2, a little uplifting would be good!
Good luck, Janet0 -
Janet,
Sadly, no I have never made it to the flower show in Philly.... maybe I should add that to the bucket list? I had hoped to go when Mom was still here and we were younger, but the timing never worked out.
However, both times our family went to Disney was in the spring - and yes, EPCOT is beautiful with the flower shows.
The first time we went (pre-surgery)... I was the one left "holding the bags" while hubby and Jr went on the rides.
Second time - let's just say we lived like we were dying... jk... we went to Universal and I did the Harry Potter ride - yes I did.. and I even went on mission to space and space mountain... wow what a difference a couple of years makes....
