Hey Betty. I'm sorry that you are having complications. I met a woman in the hospital after having my surgery and she was going through some complications. But she said it's well worth it in the end. I hope things turn out better for you and I'm totally willing to help you though.0 -

Hi Everyone,
Weight has been an issue since I can remember. I asked my doctor for a referral to the 6 month weight loss program which was required by insurance prior to wls. I had no intention of ever getting surgery, even though I knew several people at work who had the bypass and lap-band. My thought was that I could learn from the classes and lose weight the "old fashioned way".
After failing to lose any weight those 6 months and learning all about wls I decided the vertical sleeve is for me. Just finished all my
requirements and am waiting for it to be submitted to insurance for approval.
In the meantime I find out i now have borderline high blood pressure, mild sleep apnea and an enlarged liver. I am 5'4 and 250lbs and here to start tracking and low carbing prior to surgery.0 -
congrats on your decision to have wls i also had the sleeve done aug 14 2012 im 5'3 and 250lbs feel free to add me for support and motivation : )0

That is so sad to hear. I hope they can get your health issues under control so that you can move forward with your decision to go for the sleeve. Good luck and all the best to you!0

Hello! I'm Robyn. I'm 30 years old, single, and a teacher. I have been using MFP on and off for several years now, but I am back on it to help with my accountability in the weight loss surgery journey. I am having RNY Gastric Bypass on October 17 (10 more days!!!). I am on the pre-op diet right now, which is really hard, as you know. The worst part for me is the protein shakes--they literally make me sick. Any encouragement and support that can be given, I would appreciate so much! Your stories and pictures are so inspiring, so thanks to everyone here for sharing their own journey!0

HI All,
My name is Alberta, I am 46 and had RNY July 18, 2012. Thanks to all of you for your posts, they are tremendously helpful, informative and encouraging. RNY was the best decision of my life and I have absolutely no regrets! I struggle with exercise and fluid intake but reading the posts here help me see how important those things are so now I'm going to get myself in gear and make it happen!
Love being able to share my journey with kindred spirits!0 -

Hi, I'm Angela. I'm 45 and had gastric bypass on June 6th of 2012. I've lost 61 pounds since surgery. I found MFP in July and it's helped a lot. I like reading the forums since I work late and can't attend the support group, but I've never replied to any until now. Everyone seems so nice. I'm really glad I found you!0

Hi I'm Megan! I just had my surgery on October 10th, 2012. It's only about a week out and while I don't feel much like eating physically, I'm already mentally thinking about food I can't have.
I am just staying strong and remembering that in August I gave up fast food and fatty food as a choice, so now I just have to keep my choice. It's not forced, it's a choice. (although I'd probably throw up anything bad I tried to eat right now, it still feels better to remind myself that it's a choice)0 -
Thanks so much, Medea!0

Make that 62 pounds today!0

Hello everyone. My name is Jennifer. I had gastric bypass surgery on August 10th, 2012. I started at 350 pounds, lost 21 pounds before surgery. Day of surgery was 329. Today, almost 10 weeks later I weigh 269. Feeling good. No complications thus far. I was a diabetic, on 5 shots a day of 2 different kinds of insulin. Blood sugars were still constantly above 300. I was on my way to wan early grave. I havent needed insulin since the day I left the hospital. My diabtetes is in complete remission. Surgery has given me back my shot at a future.
I have a husband and a 7 year old daughter. I make videos on youtube about my journey, under the same name I use here....jennifermwb. I am always happy to make new friends and am so excited to find this group on mfp.0 -
Hi there, my name is Babs from CT. I have been here on MFP for over a year and have not had much success over the past 10 years trying to lose weight the traditional way. Decide earlier this year I wanted to have bariatric surgery. Was undecided between bypass and sleeve. I have finally decided to have the sleeve. Already had my first surgeon visit, blood work completed yesterday, saw my cardiologist today and she is fully on board and will send the go ahead to my surgeon, first NUT visit is tomorrow (I only need 2 pre surg), group session is first week of Nov and seeing the psych at the end of Nov. My doc anticipates my surgical date will be late Feb to early March 2013.0

Hi all! I'm Kelsea and I have not YET had WLS, but I am in the process! I am 25, 5'10" and hit my all-time high weight of 266 3 weeks ago, though I recently dropped 7 pounds. I was never obese, and until my early 20's I averaged about 155-170 (drastic fluctuation) but I put on the pounds after two kids. I go Tuesday the 30th for the required seminar, and will speak to a surgeon afterwards but I'm estimated to be able to have surgery by early Jan. I'm looking for any advice and support during this time! I've got a lot on my plate with school, my kids and now moving forward with WLS, that I don't want to let myself falter!0

Hello my name is Tiffany, I am very early on into the process. I have yet to have surgery. I have however been obese for as long as I remember and now that I'm 33 and have struggled so much to lose weight I am going through this process. I'm tried of not being able to do things most people take for granted. I have been going to the gym and tracking my food for over a month now went down ten pounds but now back up ten pounds in less than a week (I think it is water weight) gym wise I have been trying to find a workout partner but still have yet to find one0

Hi!! My name is Kat. I had bypass on June 18, 2012 and have lost 72.5 lbs so far. It's been a difficult and emotional journey. I started gaining after high school and it never stopped. Tried every diet out there, as I am sure most people have. My husband and I want at least one baby, and I haven't been able to get pregnant because of weight and PCOS. Hopefully I can get pregnant before I get much older, That clock is ticking!!
I absolutely love this site, and all the support that comes along with it!!0 -
Hi Everyone,
My name is Angela and I'm hoping to have RNY next month. My insurance (Kaiser) requires that you lose 10% of your weight before they'll schedule the surgery and I'm only 7.5 lbs from that. I have been in the program since and have only now decided I'm ready to make the changes necessary to be successful after my surgery. I reached my surgery goal weight in May 2011 and decided NOT to have the surgery because I thought I could lose the rest of my weight on my own...obviously I could not. I gained 40 of the 57 lbs I had lost and my type 2 diabetes spun WAY out of control! I'm ready and really excited to finally be taking the steps to take control of my weight once and for all!
Really excited to have found this group and hope to learn alot from all of you.
I would love to know more about the gastric sleeve and whether or not this is something I should consider over RNY. Can anyone share advantages and disadvantages?
Thanks
Angela0 -
Angela, you should talk to your doctor, but for me the advantage for RNY was clearing up my type 2. I stopped taking diabetes meds the day of surgery, and my A1C at my 8 week checkup was 5.3 --pretty amazing. My fasting blood sugars are usually in the 70s now, and were from the day I got home. I'm sure the diet changes with the sleeve will certainly help type 2 as well, but the sleeve doesn't have the hormonal changes that RNY does.
Like you, I had lost weight in the past, but never kept it off. The surgery is a great motivator. It's good you are here before surgery. I didn't start MFP til after. The best advice I could give anyone is log everything. Every bite. If you do that, it will be much easier to see if you start to drift.0 -

Thanks for your response. That is actually what I've heard as well which is why I continue to lean toward the RNY. 5.3 - that is amazing!!! I've been logging on MFP for awhile and plan to continue even after surgery. I'm really glad I found this group!0 -
Hi WLS group,
I am currently enrolled in a Bariatric Program in Saskatchewan for WLS.......my goal is to have the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy......Part of funding for this program is that we have a 6 month pre-program to participate in......we see a psychologist, dietician, exercise therapist and our nurse........we have certain things we need to follow for 2 months before we go back for our follow ups with each specialist......kind of like homework for weight loss for 6 months.........I am in the first month , well going onto Week #2 and My Fitness pal was suggested to us for logging our food and exercise intake.....I really like this program.....kept me accountable........just counting down the months now until surgery and permanent weight loss once and for all....been battling this for about 25 years......excited to be on this journey......!!!0 -
Hi. My name is Corinne. I am 40 years old and currently partaking in the prequalificaiton program for the sleeve procedure. This is my third month of supervised weight loss and just had my psychiatric evaluation that I think I passed. I need to lose at least 120 pounds. Excited about the prospect and likely having it done. Worried about the lose skin and the recovery from surgery.0
