I've just set up a Group on Garmin Connect for this one... could someone give it a quick look, see if it's working please ?
http://connect.garmin.com/group/12550 -
Okay - latest development for the "classics challenge". The more I thought about the whole "classics" ethos, it's about winning races, rather than accumulated time or distance.
Sooo....
Each "race" will accumulate "MFP Points" (a bit like UCI points, but nothing to do with Fat Pat and Corkscrew Hein.)
"Winner" of the race is the person who rides the furthest in the 24 hours that the race is run, in your own time-zone, in a single ride - if you ride to and from work, pick the longest of the two as only one will count!
Points Will be Awarded as Follows
1st - 25 pts
2nd - 20 pts
3rd - 16 pts
4th - 12 pts
5th - 11 pts
6th - 10 pts
7th - 9 pts
8th - 8 pts
9th - 7 pts
10th - 6 pts
11th - 5 pts
12th - 4 pts
13th - 3 pts
14th - 2 pts
15th - 1 pts
Hopefully, this will stop the whole competition stagnating if someone goes out on the first race day, rides a 600km Brevet and is so far ahead of anyone else that they simply cannot be caught...
I might just also add in "spot prize" points themed around the races... so - if someone posts a photo of their ride on "Strada Bianche" day that shows their bike on a unmetalled road then it may just get an extra point. If there are any "theme points" for a given ride day, I'll post it in the info. thread
As always, comments & suggestions welcome0 -
Hi there - does it mean there is winner of each classic, at the same time you accumulate points of all classics?
Not sure if I explain myself clear enough :bigsmile:0 -
Each classic race has it's own winner, and a overall winner at the end of the season, decided on cumulative points (rather than total mileage).0

Great, thanks for clarifying.0 -
I just thought that it would be possible, if someone went and rode a couple of 600km brevets or something equally ludicrous, that the competition could be over and done with before half the rides had been done - this way, there is at least a chance of keeping interest right to the end.
Plus, it allowed the "spot prize" points - which really appealed to my warped sense of humour...0 -
The first classic is next week - can't wait :bigsmile:0

I'm slightly confused TBH - the official website's showing it's on the 2nd March (Saturday) now - when I originally set this up, it was on the 3rd March (i..e Sunday) - iirc it's normally run on the Saturday, so I thought that it was strange they'd moved it - but as Paris-Nice begins on the 3rd I guess they've kept it as Saturday...
Edit: just found out what's happened - La Gazzetta have come up with another race to make a weekend of things - the Giro Del Lazio (scheduled for the 3rd March)
So - apologies to anyone who's booked in a long ride for the 3rd on the strength of my information - If it's any consolation, it's stuffed my chances of getting a decent ride in as well :-(
I'm also slightly disappointed that we haven't had a few more people sign up - bearing in mind we had 20 riders in the Vuelta Challenge last year...0 -
Saturday March 2 it is then. Thank you for this or I will have unaccountable kilometers!0
-
Ahhhhhh bum - I can't do next Saturday (I thought 2nd March was another week off, February always confuses me by being shorter!) as I'm looking after my friend and my 8 year old goddaugher whilst her husband is on a course (she has MS). Ah well - will have to kick up a few gears on the other ones instead I guess!0
-
It's a long season Fran (that's what I'm counting on, anyway....)0
-
I was looking, no Omloop het Nieuwsblad? Oh well, will just go for a long ride then drink Belgian beer the rest of the day then. Call it preseason.0

Simple reason for it's ommision - I screwed up... feel free to apply for your entry fees refunding :laugh:0 -
Well the ride got cancelled like K-B-K, too much snow on the ground! The Belgian beers however, did not.0

...The Belgian beers however, did not.
there are some things that the weather cannot spoil... indeed, I found myself yesterday afternoon, beside a roaring fire with a regular supply of dark beer, and frankly, I didn't really miss the biking part :laugh:0 -
Strade Bianche Spot Prize Points Announcement.
- if you post a photo that shows your bike on a unmetalled road with proof that it was that days ride then it may just get an extra point.
- if you complete your challenge ride on a "L'Eroica" compliant bike (http://www.eroica-ciclismo.it/documents/regolamento_eng.pdf for the rules) and post a photo to prove it, you'll get another 5 points - 7 if you're in period kit, with a tubular around your shoulders...
- and just for the hell of it - post a picture of your post-ride recovery bottle of Chianti and you can have yet another point!0 -
Unmetalled road? You mean dirt/gravel road?0
-
Unmetalled road? You mean dirt/gravel road?
Yep - anything that hasn't got a hard, sealed tarmac, bitumen, chipseal or concrete surface - traditionally it'd be a "50mm down crusher run limestone, loose rolled over compacted subsoil" surface...
Actually, it's just a chance for the MTB and 'crosser crew to get a bonus point in...0 -
Classics Challenge thread opened for ride submissions etc: - just in case there are any nocturnal antipodeans participating....
Fair warning people, the thread WILL be pretty tightly moderated and I may well delete non ride-report posts. Please keep all discussions, questions and trash-talking in the discussion thread. Cheers!0 -
I lost one third of my ride this morning on strava hope this wont happen tomorrow
No idea what caused it, seems both my bike computer polar cs200 and app on phone went wonky at the same time, spooky...0 -
Anyone doing the whole 188km?0

Anyone doing the whole 188km?
I'll be lucky if I get the "normal loop" in to be honest - everything seems to be going tits up at the moment - called around to get the old bike back from my mate - he'd neglected to tell me that he was out of tyres... There were 2 Tubs glued one - one of which has worn so thin the canvas pattern is showing in the tread, and the other is only airtight due to something like a whole can of Tufo Sealant in it! No spare - that had a 2 inch rip in the sidewall. He'd been riding the bike with a modern pair of wheels fitted instead, which he said I was welcome to, but TBH it just seemed like cheating, so I left it with him.
I'm also having problems with my system for recording the race - i can't get out until around 11:00 am tomorrow, and if I was going to get a bigger ride in, i'd need to record the race. Not actually having SKY+ or HD (frankly, outside of the bike racing, I don't watch much tv, so never felt the need) I used to use my old laptop and a USB video grabber to record from the upstairs sky box. You guessed it - the USB video grabber isn't playing ball with the new Win8 laptop. Of course I only discover this now, not while I can get to PC World and grab a modern replacement...0 -
Today is not my day
Rained all night last night & this morning - waited to 09:00 got unbearably restless so off I went - it was OK apart from the rain, wind & spray and looked like xxxx when back home.
To make things more "interesting" Strava lost almost half of the mileage (following lost minutes yesterday). My trusted assistant Polar CS200 told me I ridden 59km, Strava picked up 33.6km.
Looks like I need to go shopping before the next challenge0 -

That will be so good
I need to do some research about the differences of the Garmin models, and what accessories are required, and the price tag - seems really expensive :noway:0 -
Okay Everyone - this is the last call for entries - I'll be closing the thread and reporting the points scored in approximately 3 hours (probably just after 9:00pm my local time) - if anyone has any rides to add, or "spot prize proof" to submit, now would be a REALLY good time to do so0
-
Okay Folks - Submissions are now Closed for the Strade Bianche...
Provisional Results for the first section of the Classics Challenge are as Follows:- Congratulations to Harksey, a strong ride mate...
- Me (how the hell did that happen )
Nice ride cloggsy - and well done to everyone who got out there and did a ride - and to those who didn't make it - not to worry - one race doesn't make a classics campaign, plenty of time to catch up.
I'd also like to add my personal thanks to all the people who joined in the spirit of things and did the "spot prize" bits - they're a bit of fun, but really help add to the atmosphere, IMO!
Okay then - we've a break now until the 17th where we're back in Italy... I'll hopefully see you all on the Via della Chiesa Rossa in Milano for the start of La Primavera :laugh:0
