Hey my name is Julia and I had Gastric bypass just over 2 years ago on Nov 2, 2010. I have lost almost 170lbs so far since starting my journey, it was the best decison that I made. I haven't had many issues with it, I`ve dumped a few times and I have thrown up quite a few times but its all part of the experience. Its a roller coaster ride and enjoy the changes. Yes the hair does come back after awhile!0

Welcome!! so glad to hear about the hair thing, because currently I am in the losing hair by the handful and boy is it getting thin. Figure it has to slow down soon, but wondering if I am going to need a hairpiece or wig before it all over. 5 1/2 months out. You have awesome success, what kind of diet and exercise do you still do to maintain the weight loss?0 -
I have always been lucky to have really thick hair so I was never too concerned about loosing all my hair, but I shed alot of it for quite a long time it seemed. My bf use to say I shed as much as a Golden Retriever lol I took biotin everyday and still take it, not sure if it actually helped with it or not. I still would like to loose another 30 lbs but it gets much harder the further you are out and the less you have to loose. I try to maintain a healthy diet and try to keep my protein levels up. I usually have a shake a day for lunch or snack and or a protein bar. I exercise a fair bit I usually get to the gym 4-5 days a week for a 1-2 hrs each time. I have come a long long ways and am very scard of the old me coming back. As my surgeon always said it just a tool to help you loose the weight you need to do the work!! I have never forgotten this, its not a majic cure the weight will come back on and you can end up being right where you were when you started. How has your journey been?0

So far I've been pretty lucky, other than the hair loss and constipation issues I have not had major side effects. I had surgery 6/7/12 and started at 261.4 and yesterday I was 173.8. I exercise 6 days a week for generally 40 min at the gym and walking at work etc. I have about 30 more pounds to go to meet the goal weight of 145. I'm bored with my food choices and need to switch things up but it's hard with trying hard to get in the protein etc. overall I'm just bored with the exercise and good but once I figure that out things should be good. I'm happy with the loss so far and hoping to meet my goals someday! Does it sound bad to say I'm bored after the gift I've been given? Sounds ungrateful LOL0

My name is Jen Rose. I had RNY done Oct 2011. I have lost about 118 so far and I am about 9 pounds from my first goal. I went from a size 26 to a size 10. I had some complications my first 7 weeks out, lost a lot of hair but I would do it all again tomorrow.0

Welcome Jen and Christine. I am trying to figure out how to get this forum moving. Any suggestions?0

Hi I am Adrianne I had surgery Feb 2012. I too went through some hair loss, but it has stopped and my hair is slowly going back to its regular thickness. I am so thankful for my surgery. I am beginning to become more active- treamill and fitness classes. However my greatest fear is falling back into the mindless eating trap. I am trying to think everything I put something in my mouth but it doesn't always happen. For the first few months I was so diligent about tracking everything, my husband commented that I was becoming compulsive about it, so I slacked off, but I am back as I have found I am snacking more than I should because it is there and I am not thinking- just snacking. My biggest focus right now is my activity and thinking about what I am eating... I am in need of suggestions and guidance. So far I am down 141 lbs. I am 3 numbers away from a normal BMI! And I am 15lbs from my first goal, 45 lbs from my end goal.0

Hi. My name is Rachel, I am 28 years old and live in WV. I have not had my surgery yet, I am still in the 6 month diet plan ( I have 3 more months left) It already seems like it's been forever, but I know my journey has just started. I'm always looking for MFP friends that want to encorage and motivate each other, if that sounds like you then send me a friend request. This site has been wonderful, and you girls/guys have been more of an inspiration than you know :-)0

My name is Autumn, I am 28 and I just had RNY gastric surgery on Sept. 12, 2012. I had serious complications during my surgery and am still dealing with the risidual effects from those complications. So far I have lost almost 100lbs. Which puts me at the halfway point to my goal. I have also lost my hair and am struggling to stay nourished. I am hoping to network with others as the more support I have the better.0

Greetings to all! I had RNY Gastric Bypass 10 years ago, still going strong. I am here for support and education, the surgeon fixed me physically but I still run to food and struggle to maintain my weight (I lost 165 pounds total) , I am still human. I have been tracking my nasty eating habits for 4 days and it has really enlightened me to the changes I need to make. By far, the best decision I have made was to have bariatric surgery!0

Hello! I had my RNY 11/4/11 I've lost 100 lbs so far, and I've been at a stand still for literally months! I've lost my surgeon, due to insurance changes, so I'm feeling a little lost, so I'm here hoping to get some much needed support, and suggestions. I'm going to keep up with logging to see if that's where my issues are. I've had no major issues, I can tolorate so many things, that I didn't think I'd be able to, and wish I didn't, though as I am over a year out, I am starting to find things that I was able to tolerate a few months ago now are giving me trouble. So, I'm tweaking things now, and I desperately need the support. I'm only a little over half way so, I want to figure this thing out. I would definately do this again, I've regained my health and I'm so much more active! I love it! And I'm still very excited!0

Hey everyone!! I'm Melanie!! I have RNY 11/27/2012 and I've lost 73 so far. I'm still a LONG way away from my goal. I haven't picked up any really 'bad' eating habbits, but I'm stuck on what to eat. I had some complications and ended up having another surgery about a month ago. So, if anyone wants to add me or inbox me, feel free!!0

Hi all, I had surgery 9 years ago. I had lost 118 lbs. in the first couple years and never reached my goal weight.. I had gained 54 lbs back. I now need to lose 30 more to get back to my lowest weight. It is such a struggle! Seems most everyone on here is only a few years out. I am willing to share my experiences and could use your support as well. I'd like to here from any one that has been out for a while to see how you are dealing after so many years. I have not regretted having surgery one bit. It has given me back my life and more.
About the hair loss. That's normal. Rapid weight loss will do this. Your hair will grow back. Its scary when you wash your hair and it seems all your hair s left in the tub. Oh, if you go get your hair cut make sure you tell your beautician. They will think something is terribly wrong and scare them half to death. Speaking from experience.0 -
I had gastric bypass surgery (RNY) 111/26/12. My BMI was 36. I was a type 2 diabetic. I had 60-70 pounds to lose. So far I have lost 39 pounds. I am very pleased.0

Hi- My name is Chris, and i just had my surgery on 2-04-13. I am still very excited about being stronger and healthier in the long run. I have not had any problems with food so far other than telling my brain to listen to my tiny new pouch when it is getting full. I am having trouble drinking enough water. I used to drink a ton of water all day, and now I never feel thirsty. I am forcing myself to drink but nothing tastes good. I was so excited to log on today and find a RNY group- looking forward to chatting with everyone!0

Hi there!! My name is Shannon and I had surgery on Dec. 10, 2012. 3 months in and going strong. The changes are amazing and still shock me!!0

Hi there,. I am 7 months post surgery and don't regret one second of my journey. I have lost 89lbs. so far and hoping to loose another 26lbs. or maybe, fingers crossed, 36lbs. I have a host of physical problems which caused most of the weight gain in the first place and have seen some of them improve a bit since surgery.
I was logging my food intake on my own but only for the protein intake. So happy I found this site as I love being able to track my daily calories, carbs, fat and sugar intakes as well. Also have been enjoying the support I am getting. It's nice to know that we aren't alone in our journey.0 -
Good morning to all. I am 6 months out from my surgery. I have unofficially lost 100 pounds. It will become official on 21st of May 2013. There are days that I feel like I could eat all day. Then there are days to where I do good to eat what I need too. I am "scared" of regaining my weight back. The day of surgery, I weighed 415 pounds. I have a daughter who I want to see grow up.0

Just remember that this way of eating is still new to us and that some days will be like taking baby steps. Also that not every day will be perfect but we just have to pick ourselves up and keep going. Good luck. ~0 -
Greetings everyone. I had RNY 3/4/2010. Lost almost 100 pounds from my highest ever weight. The first two years were a breeze, then my appetite came back and the last year has been really tough. Doesn't help that I retired and don't get out much now. Really trying to stay fit and not regain more than the 5-7 pounds that I have so far. Love to chat with others in the same situation.0

Hey now!
Background: i have been heavy my whole life and since my 30's have been just plain old every day run of the mill fat! 450+ ( at some points heavier). i have tried every diet on earth.
my story begins August 2012 in the diner in Media Pa.
My best friend asked me to look into Gastric bypass surgery for 3 reasons
1: he is my brother and loves me
2: i was turning 50 in September
3: lets face i was not getting any thinner.
After my research i determined that this was the tool i had been missing. i further checked on insurance and company policy on medical leave.all came back very positive.
After narrowing down the possible hospitals in the Philadelphia area, i arrive at the doorsteps of Bryn Mawr hospital and the Bariatric Center headed by Dr. Richard Ing.
It has been nine months since the start of this journey and I passed through the door on June 12,203 at approx 8:30am , I am now 1 week post-op for the RNY procedure and feeling fantastic .
I have dropped 64lbs total since the start of the program. I exercise on a daily basis and the results are amazing. i feel like a new man, ( why did i wait so long...doh!) i am at the best place i have been in years both physically and mentally. in one word my life is AWESOME! can only imagine were i will be a year from today.
wish me luck, ..catch ya later

Hello, My name is Mindy and I had my RNY done May of 2013. So just a couple months ago! After much deliberation and support from my husband I decided this was best for my health and our life together. My surgery didn't go as smoothly as the DR would have liked and I am considered "uncharted territory" But I know it will all be worth it in the end! I am excited to start this new chapter of health in my life and to follow others success and cheer them on!0

Alright here goes. My name is Mayra I am 36. I had the Roux-n-y gastric by pass 10 years ago. I was one of kaiser's first 100 patients to do it and had my surgery date in less than a month. Everything happen so fast. I use to be way over 350 some lbs. I had to loose weight.
I had my surgery shortly after Carnie Wilson had hers. Kinda motivated me. But there wasnt much info on what to eat when I did it. i was to eat no meat for a year/chicken or fish. Yeah can you believe that. I became lactose intolerant.
I had the panneculectomy 5 years later. WOW what a difference. I want to get a full body reconstrustion. Some say I dont but I still need to remove some loose skin. Why not. I don't have kids.
I do not have to take no more diabetic medications (everyone in my family are strong diabetics meaning insulin, amputation and diaylis) and I happen to get that gean. I became the opposite but slowly A1C is going back up again. I also do not have no more sleep apnea and a lot of medications I dont need. Never needed cholestrol or high blood pressure. But my knees are really damaged. Now I have had 2 bleeding ulcers throughout these years. One was 4 years ago and needed blood transfusion. Last year I got the same two ulcer develop in the same area (even taking four different stomach medication) but when I started seeing the blood I went in.
Then this year I went back because I ate something that didnt digest. My stomach isnt digesting a lot of food that I use to eat. For example raw carrots.......noodles (chinnese food), fish, some chicken, even though I chew and COCONUT. It just sits there for days. So I got to be careful. I dont drink coffee. No sodas or carbonation. I find it hard to eat 1200 calories and when I start excercising. I go overboard. Way overboard and less hungry.
I lost a lot of weight. I became anemic......constantly getting b shots. I have managed to keep my weight off......but last year I had a major traumatic depression (a lot) that made me gain about 50 lbs and I kinda quit excercising. A no no. Then I started to work out this year.....and lost weight. then 2 months ago I fell (bad knees....due to the excess weight). I broke tail bone and fractured right rotator shoulder. I will be having surgery in a few weeks. So I am kinda bed rest (but been cheating and trying to do some excercise). I guess its a habbit.
Now there are so many surgeries and diferent surgery. My mom had hers a year after mine. But she stretched her stomach and eats all the wrong stuff. Do I regret it? No I do not. I just wish there was more information on a diet plan back then to follow. MFP helps and I like it. But I think they need to work on a special one for specific gastric by pass patients. Because our bodies are COMPLETLY different than a normal person. Our vitamin intakes are not the same, neither is our absorbation rate or the amount of calories our body can consume.
So thats a little bit about me. By the way mine was an open (no laproscopic).
If you want to add me as a friend I would be glad to accept.
I am tired of hearing about this 1200 calorie if it works or dosent work. I have kept food journals all my life. I have noticed that I would barely eat 1200 calroies and burn 1200 calories and lose weight. Then plateu. Then I increase to 1500 calories and burned 1200 calories........and GAINED weight. So then I completly said screw it......ate almost 1200 calories....and would excercise 1 to 2 days a week about 130 calories and BOOM I lost weight like crazy. Of course every day I drink 6-8 bottles of water.
Being in bed (not being able to excercise) Ive lost about 18lbs in one month. Barely eating. But drinking my water. Definetly not excercising daily as before. I measured myself and lost a lot of inches too. Everything is so confusing to me. But never regret the surgery.
Advice......excercise.....drink your water......do your protein shake........your b12.......get your iron up......and don't give up.
Plus avoid fast foods.

Hi, I'm Alex, Ive lost a total so far of 98lbs i had my gastric bypass in feb '13. I have been a yoyo dieter all my life at one point i was down to 9 stone and at another 22 stone...
Since my bypass I've been in control which feels amazing, i do worry that one day ill slip and gradually creep back into bad habits..
I plan on having any skin removed next year and i'm already saving.
