@raingirl21 The second trimester, I've read, is where your "fastest" gains will happen since you still have room inside you for food haha. So weight gain can slow down in the third trimester.

Does 1800 calories feel like enough to you and are you still gaining on that amount? You do want to still gain. I wouldn't say you're eating too much. You might be bordering on not enough - depending on your logging habits and activity. Are you tracking carefully or loosely? You can try 1800 and see how it goes though. If in a week or two you've lost weight, then it's not enough.

You were in a normal BMI when you started (160-19=141 lb which means a BMI of 23.5 which IS in the normal range), even if you still gain a pound a week from now on, you're set to gain a total of approx 31 lb which is perfectly within the recommended amount! 25-35 lbs is the range for a woman who begins her pregnancy at a normal BMI. So maybe your doctor isn't well informed if they're making you feel bad for gaining the recommended amount!! Not gaining enough is risky for the baby too!

I'm 5' 6" and eating about 2200 a day @ ~20 weeks, sometimes more sometimes less, but I'm tracking kind of loosely so I doubt my "intake" is exactly that (I suspect I'm eating closer to 2300-2400 a day). Just mostly going by how it feels. Some days I'm really hungry and others I'm not. I also have not made myself exercise any more than once a week for 35 mins and I have a desk job. I'm pretty darn lazy haha. I'm not sure if our ages are similar. I'm 28. I'm also gaining approx 1 lb a week now.

If your doctor brings it up again you can try to put the pressure on them to suggest a calorie amount that you should be eating! Or get a referral to a dietitian maybe? If they're going to bring it up and be negative about it, I really don't think it's much to ask that they actually help you!

For the record, my 5' 0" sister gained 35 lbs with all three pregnancies and all babies were healthy and she remained healthy too. No problems with the weight going back down naturally afterward.

@takingsmallsteps You're so close to the end! Wow. I read in a random book recently that if the extra weight goes to the caboose you're having a girl lol. Not sure I believe any of those wive's tales, but do you know what you're having? We should do a test hehe.

@VeryKatie Thank you so much for the insight! This is my first pregnancy and I don't know what's too much to gain. I was fit before my pregnancy, went to the gym all the time but that disappeared when I got pregnant and got sick and tired. My doc doesn't tell me anything expect that I'm gaining too much, which stresses me out. I am tracking with MFP but I'm not weighing anything so it is a loose measurement. I just feel that this last month I've really popped and I feel big and know I'm just going to keep growing and am afraid I'm going to gain 50 pounds and have a difficult birth. I'm 36 and not a young chicken. :)

@VeryKatie, it is a girl! I blame her entirely for making my bum fat! Well... I may also be partly responsible haha

    YAY HALF WAY POINT!

Format: (Weight gain this week, cumulative weight gain)
    Height: 5' 6"
    Age: 28
    Goal to Gain: 25-35 lb

    Starting weight: 139.6 lb
    Week 9: 11/09: 139.2 (-0.2, -0.4)
    Week 10: 11/16: 140.2 (+1.0, +0.6)
    Week 11: 11/23: 139.0 (-1.2, -0.6)
    Week 12: 11/30: 141.2 (+2.2, +1.6)
    Week 13: 12/07: 139.8 (-1.4, +0.2)
    Week 14: 12/14: 139.2 (-0.6, -0.4)
    Week 15: 12/21: 141.0 (+1.8, +1.4)
    Week 16: 12/28: ? - On a trip
    Week 17: 01/04: ? - On a trip
    Week 18: 01/11: 140.8 (-0.2, +1.2)
    Week 19: 01/18: 143.2 (+2.4, +3.6)
Week 20: 01/25: 145.2 (+2.0, +5.6) - The weird spreadsheet I keep that tells me how much I should weight right now says I should be at 145.4 so I have caught up to it now!

On another note, it looks like I might be gaining more like 2 lb per week lately hahah. So maybe 2400 cals a day (? maybe it's more... oops... I think I should try to track every second day) is too much for me... We shall see! Though on average over 6 weeks it's 1 lb... but I'm definitely more hungry than I was 5 weeks ago.

@raingirl21 If you'd like, you could bring some resources to you next appointment and ask your doctor point blank if he thinks the typical guidelines are applicable to you, and if not, then why. You could ask him how gaining a total of 31 lbs (what you're on track for) is too much. Stump him/her hahah. It's unfortunate that your doctor isn't being aware of how much it bothers you. And I do really wonder where the "too much" comes from.

Here is a US OB/GYN site that states the recommended gain ranges during pregnancy depending on your starting BMI - just so you know I wasn't pulling it out of the air!

    http://www.acog.org/Resources-And-Publications/Committee-Opinions/Committee-on-Obstetric-Practice/Weight-Gain-During-Pregnancy

@takingsmallsteps Hum! So maybe that wives tale is true. I don't know what I'm having but I'm also not quite sure where I'm gaining yet. A little bit in the legs but a bunch in the belly so far. But it might be too early for me to tell.

You're doing great. Are you exercising any or logging? My goal is 25lb max but I usually hit 30-40 so we'll see haha. I'm trying to be healthier this time around, started my pregnancy weight higher than my other kiddos so really hoping to keep under 160lbs (started off 132ish)

@cocolo89 I was logging about once or twice a week to try to keep in check but after 2 weeks of 2lb gain I'm going to track every day this week to see how things equal out - I would like to try to figure out where I should be eating to gain 1 lb a week more evenly. For the most part I'm using natural hunger cues but I have noticed I've really been picking up the cookies and chips a lot more lately so I want to adjust that a bit. Oh and I do weigh myself everyday to watch the trend.

I have only been exercising once a week... which isn't enough. I'm really starting to stiffen up in my back and my abs are bothering me more now too.

I honestly think me sleeping more is having a HUGE positive effect on my weight gain (and natural hunger cues). I used to only get 5-6 hours a night and now I rarely get less than 8 (thanks to my first trimester and habit building).

I have been logging my intake since 2013 though so I think now that I've given myself permission to try eating more intuitively, it's actually working (it never has in the past though).

I also may have a little spreadsheet going to give me weekly goals haha.

Plus I run a group calorie tracking challenge that keeps me more mentally focused just through interaction with the ladies there.

I'm also in week 7 and up 4 lbs without eating more than the maintenance calories. I have terrible nausea too. Bananas, toast, chicken with rice are my best friends. All sweets make me really sick (thanks God)!!!! But I have trouble with water. Makes me so sick too. I try today the zero Powerade cause I was getting too thirsty.

Agreed, I think it's normal to gain a bit right at the beginning. I was probably the weirdo and all my apps are telling me I'm not gaining enough which is freaking me out.

I thought this was a pretty cool chart to show how much to expect to gain or watch yourself. Just enter your weight and it does calculations week by week.

I am just shy of 18 weeks and I am down 9lbs. I am still eating healthy choices and trying to gain the healthy amount of weight they said i should but between morning sickness that is just ending and feeling like eating enough healthy choises of food to hit enough calories to gain is WAY to much I am losing more at each appointment. Dr hasnt said anything yet but i worry about it being bad for baby. I gained 16 with first 30 with second and 23 with third...never lost during pregbancy before but never really made the effort for healthy choices before. Started trying to eat healthier afyer my 3rd and dont wanna go back but dont want to cause any risk to baby.

I had a big weight gain at 7 weeks too, and had a minor freak out session, but realistically I hadn't been eating over maintenance, so I told myself to pull it together and continue on. Dropped back off a couple days later. I attested it to the crappy constipation I was suffering from last week, but who knows, too much hormones and whatever floating around in here right now, makes weight fluctuations even more confusing :(

Thus ends my week of tracking. It looks like I ate an average of 2624 calories a day to gain 1.2 lb. I will do another week of tracking I think. I want to find that 1 lb a week sweet spot. Or even to verify this week's results.

@raingirl21 did you get a chance to clarify the expected weight gain with your doctor?

We are almost on the same boat hon. I started my first pregnancy being 172 and the day they weighted me for the drugs for the c-section I was 234.
This time I started at 182.5 and now week 8 I'm 185.5. I'm having lot's of nausea and vomiting this time plus extreme migraines. I definitely can't eat as much healthy I want. I can't keep down water or anything else besides toast, pasta, Doritos (LOL) and isotonic flavoured drinks. Maybe a banana every now and then. Since nausea kicked in I've stable weight but I'm not happy with my food choices.
I have to tell you. Just keep a general track of what you're eating and you'll be fine. Don't overreact. Also my friend that is more heavy than I am, had an easy and natural birth without complications. I had an emergency c section on the other hand. Weight is not always an indicator of how your pregnancy will go.
    Good luck.

    Week 17: 1/29: 160.4 (+6.4)
    Week 18: 2/5: 161.0 (+7.0)

I'm averaging 1 lb/week since 12 weeks. Which is right on track for where I want to be. Eating about 1700 cal/day total on average. It's fun being old. Lol. I maintain (not pregnant) at around 1400.

I thought this was a pretty cool chart to show how much to expect to gain or watch yourself. Just enter your weight and it does calculations week by week.

This is super helpful - thanks! It's so hard to know if you're on track week by week when the doctor gives you a total weight gain "goal." Looks like I'm right on track for my beginning BMI - yay!

This is my first I'm about to hit 9 weeks in a couple days and up 3 lbs.
I already feel the need to buy bigger pants. although the other day I used a hair tie on my pants, through the loop and around the button. Worked Great!!

I'm actually quite worried, I am only 6 weeks but I have gained 6 llbs already. Previous to getting pregnant I was on cutting calories and when I found out I was pregnant I immediately went to maintenance. I excerise 5 times a week and its very rare I go over the maintenance calories if at all. I took my measurements this morning and the only increase I could see was that my breasts have grown by one inch, the rest are the same so I am hoping that its just water retention due to the extra calories??

@sorbito84 it's very likely that the remaining weight that isn't in your breasts is fluid weight! Especially when coming from a deficit.

I am starting to struggle more, thankfully I seem to be mostly done with morning sickness, but most of last week I was just freaking hungry all the time. My favorite is when I eat a meal and literally 10 minutes later feel like I haven't eaten anything. I did ok by keeping lots of veggies around so I can snack without a huge calorie hit. Today seems to be going better, so hopefully that is a sign I will get some relief this week.

Is anyone in their third trimester noticing a decrease in appetite? I haven't been gaining much during the last couple weeks but I'm not eating more than 1500 calories or so a day which is probably too low.
