Yep, I just babbled nonstop at someone about keto

Another artist at the studios where I have my space mentioned she was looking at a diet plan that was supposed to help reverse Alzheimers and I was off to the races. OMG you guys, I swore I would just mention it but I could not stop yammering about keto!! I sounded like a zealot. She was so nice to listen to me but wow. I tried to rein myself in but nope. Hoo boy. Luckily we are good friends and she probably won't be avoiding me in the halls but yeah. Wish I could have held back a tiny bit LOL.
But has that happened to you? You know this vitally important information and it feels negligent not to share it? I made sure to mention everyone is different and showed her some sites to do her own research. Anyway, now she knows, more than she ever wanted to know HA! I'll see what she does with the info. I told her I understood if she never tried it but that if she did I am here for endless questions about how it works and what to try.
Have you ever gotten a friend or relative to try low carb? Did they stick with it?

EXACTLY. I can't not bring it up. I know that some people are geared toward whole health on lower fat, higher carb, but that's just part of the population. I mainly tell folks that you should just try to reduce the carbs at any level. Any reduction is improvement in health. I know that many of the folks I've talked to have attempted some reductions. I don't know anyone who is as cray cray about it, but I figure it can never hurt to let folks know.
P.S. It gets easier not to go on about it, after a while, because you learn the key "TRIGGER" points and phrases to reel them in... Even if they educate themselves now - to research later - and implement anything even later, it's all good by me!1 -
Yup, it's a threesome yes....1

@KnitOrMiss @AlexandraCarlyle Thanks, friends! Glad it's not just me wanting to share the good news lol. She was already curious so that helped. I did further pique her interest when I mentioned the lowering of inflammation I am experiencing. But I know I overwhelmed her, d'oh! I'll do better next time
What are some good words to tantalize them to do their own research?1 -
First rule of keto is: You don't talk about keto.
Second rule of keto is: You don't talk about keto.
I break the rules often. LOL, and I have trouble stopping myself from ranting once I start.5 -
"If you're serious about conquering that erectile dysfunction of yours ...." is sometimes effective, especially in a crowd.8

It was hard for me to not be stoked after I had reached my lowest weight in 7 years haha. But I refrained. Except for telling my best friend. She told me she had decided to start eating healthier and lose weight and I told her how impressed I was with low carb. She started following it, and lost a noticeable amount of weight she has kept off! I am really proud of her...this was a huge deal!5

@CoffeeNBooze Wow what a great story! Thanks for sharing, you did your friend such a tremendous favor, IMO, so glad it worked for her.1

Actually, the only trick that ever seems like it might have some lingering effect is just maligning the *kitten* out of my own bad health (if, and only if, someone comments on my slimming down since I retired).
If they're actually listening, I try connecting my T2D to having been dutifully brainwashed by the USDA/ADA/AHA low-fat craze (which most people have seen knocked around a bit by now) and chasing dumb lipid targets.
If they're still awake and haven't left, I then mumble about everyone being different but say I am certain I could have avoided T2D (and worrying about going blind, losing my feet and other favorite bodily extremity, and getting an early blast of dementia) if I'd had the benefit of sensible screening and had adopted an LC diet early on.
Then I close with how I'm glad I am I lived long enough to eat lobster and artichokes with melted butter & olive oil, French cheese, and avocados and then swallow and lick my lips like I've been salivating left and right...

I'm pretty open about it but it only comes up when I'm either declining food or when people comment on weight loss. If these result in further queries I explain why and my progress but never push other people to go low carb.
I talk about it less now that when I first started as I wanted to be held accountable at the start which means most of my friends know I'm low carbing and a couple have made special effort to make food I can eat

@RalfLott That is fantastic lol, I'm sure you've got many faithful acolytes! But seriously, I guess we are our own best advertisements.2

@jayerde That's a good point about letting folks know your new dietary needs.1

Well that's just it. Looking healthier while matter-of-factly fussing over food, inquiring into ingredients, etc., does stick with people.1 -
LOL If people ask, I tell'em. I try to stop when before they get the fidgety look. You know the one: partially turning away, eyes darting to the side, etc.
I'm actually getting better about it. A friend was discussing alzheimer's today and how it is so common now compared to the past. I was so proud of myself when I kept my comments to "some now think it is type 3 diabetes." I'm getting better!
I've had just a handful of people switch to low carb after seeing my success. Mostly friends who are quite open minded and health oriented. About half just tried it, and the others actually stuck with it.3 -

Those are some great statistics - congratulations!0 -
When people remark or ask how I'm doing on my 'diet', I tell them, "I'm not ON a diet... I'm doing this for good... this is for life....."
This is actually a conversation I had yesterday with a bear of a guy (not fat exactly, but definitely carrying some unnecessary excess, on a tall frame)...
"What....? You're never gonna eat bread/pasta/potatoes/rice/cakes/doughnuts/biscuits ever again?!"
"Yes, I may do... at some point... but to begin with, I'm heading towards a target weight. Once I get there, I will maintain it and continue eating like this, but if I feel like it, I will give myself the occasional treat.... IF I feel like it. Right now, I can look at that plate of fairy cakes..." (muffins/doughnuts/sliced bread) "...and frankly, it totally turns me off...."
Classic and awaited reply of - "OMG! I couldn't give up bread/biscuits/cakes, I love'em!"
"Yup," I said, "I thought I couldn't either, but here I am! And it's not the bread/biscuits/cakes you can't give up - it's the sugar. Sugar is more addictive than heroin or cocaine. That's an established fact, by the way.... So when you eat something starchy, you're taking in sugars, which your body won't really thank you for. I've lost just over a stone since end of March.... On a frame my size, that's significant. Wouldn't harm you to lose a few pounds...!" I winked, he laughed.
We parted company.
I am pretty sure I left him thinking about it.....5 -
@AlexandraCarlyle Excellent conversation! I hope you did get some gears churning in his head. I always say "Oh I've had enough sweets for several lifetimes lol, I'm all set." It's not cookies I've lacked5

My DW has toiled in a hospital for 30+ years. She has seen many folks in their 90s "and they're all skinny," she declares.
Hmm.2 -
@sixaround1 your comment cracked me up.
If someone asks or is interested I'll explain to some extent, but don't go into too much detail, because I can see their eyes glaze over rather quickly and I get all the typical responses/excuses. I find it exhausting to explain, so I just don't any more. Even with the success I've had I have not had any friends or family jump on board. When they complain about weight gain, aches and pains, acid reflux, high cholesterol, headaches and on and on and on, I say that was all corrected since I change my WOE. It still has not had any effect on anyone, they all want a pill to fix it and not put the effort into changing their life style.
What I hate the most is questions about what I can't eat. I always respond with, I can eat whatever I want, I'm choosing to not eat _______ right now. It does no good for me to explain, all the delicious things I can eat. All they hear is I don't eat bread (pasta, cake, cookies.......etc) and they could never give that up. Like I said exhausting!! I should exercise credit for it!!4 -

Hmm.
Really good point! It's almost like we only get so many years to attach to our mass so if we carry around extra mass, those extra pounds use up our years faster. Damn it.1 -

Ingenious, @nvmomketo!
So mass is like a tub of peanut butter - you can smear it all over your first 50 loaves or hoard it for all 110...1 -
LOL0

If I start, I have a hard time stopping. So I only talk about it if they bring it up. To people who just casually inquire, I'm "avoiding sugar". Because cancer and alzheimers and diabetes and it was the sugar industry that vilified fat...and, yeah.1

@PaulaJSchiller Glad I could give you a chuckle with my goofiness Your comment is SO FAMILIAR to me!! Yes! Everything you said. So sad no one in your circle can break away from the carb addiction. It really is insidious, as we know. And addiction brain gives terrible advice like "You can't live without bread/pasta." Wrong. Meanwhile we are enjoying our dinners like never before!0

I think you may have put your finger on the sugar-coated elephant in the room.
Addiction of whatever stripe gets a real hold on you as it is. But if you also habitually rationalize it in terms of "healthy" or "essential for life" or "prevents starvation mode", the death grip is even stronger.0 -
Unfortunately true, @RalfLott it's a real shame. And I know what it's like, because that was once me.0
-
@Cadori Ha! Glad I'm not the only evangelist And yeah *shakes fist at sugar industry*0

@Sunny_Bunny_ HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! OMG yes.1

I come from a long line of diet evangelicals. Most of them from the "anti-agribusiness" line of diet fanatics. It's pretty much all anyone talks about at family gatherings and I have A LOT of family. I think it's why I'm so reticent to talk about my diet, your diet, any diet or way of eating. FFS can we just talk about SOMETHING ELSE?!?! Politics. Let's talk about politics AND religion. ANYTHING ELSE!5
